Re: this week and some current "Indie" comics --

People seem to be kinda "yeah, it's pretty good" about Three, which is weird to me--I think it's GREAT so far, and poised to get better. Like the art, like the characters, it's thematically interesting and funny and infuriating...

Also, Umbral was quite good in a lot of ways (really neat art, pretty cool worldbuilding), but the writer/artist team seem to be slightly less polished about comics storytelling methods than my actual favorite writers. A few panel transitions where it's impossible to figure out exactly what's happening, etc. Anyone have thoughts on it?

Spoiler for the end of Umbral #1: Like, the final page was a biggie. Where did that monster come from? Where is it in relation to the characters or the building? Jinglefingers didn't turn INTO it, right? Etc. There are other examples, but that's what I remember.

Oh, and also the framing device: "When the bards sing songs of my life, they won't mention this part, the part where I fell into the Umbral and couldn't get out." Well, no, they would, it's going to be the primary adventure of your life, right? If it didn't happen to you, the bards would have no reason to sing about you at all; you were a petty thief. It's a little annoying to me when creative teams don't bother to *think* for a minute after writing something.
But I'll still pick up #2, because I like the dark fantasy world and there's no other comic I can think of doing that sorta thing right now.

Annd... Manhattan Projects remains so much fun to read and one of my favorite comics, even though I have basically no idea about the overarching story now. It's just worth it every single issue anyway. Does the artist do anything else one half as cool?

As far as I know Nick Pitarra has only ever worked with Hickman. Before Manhattan Projects they did Red Wing and the Cannonball and Sunspot story in Mojoworld that had a few pages posted in the funny panels thread.

On the app (where things are either being banned or not submitted) no. Neither is Crossed or Prison Pit or the issue of Multiple Warheads with the porn reprint. Nobody is just trying to make a big fuss about those.

I think there's a couple reasons this is getting more play.

1) It's Matt Fraction who's one of the most recognizable names in comics these days.
2) They allowed issue 1 and then didn't allow two and then retroactively removed issue 1.
3) I don't think any of your examples listed above are available via iBooks. I could be wrong on this.

Johnny Ryan is one of the biggest names in alt comics circles, but I'm guessing the vast majority of his fans actually don't read digital comics?

People are just hyping to get more book sales is all. Issue #1 had low enough sales and issue #2 were even worse. Like it's a bigger deal because Sex Criminals is an ongoing book but I don't know how Fraction is a more recognizable name than Alan Moore.

There's an argument to be made that Moore is now simply a Weird Angry Grandpa to many of the people that buy single issues, but I'm not sure Sex Criminals would attract people who hold that view?

I just finished the latest Abe Sapien mini and I'd contend that Scott Allie remains the weakest collaborator that Mike Mignola has ever paired up with. Dude should probably stick to editing instead of writing the stuff, in my opinion. Biggest pet peeve about this particular mini is that he seems to hold the amateurish belief that rendering convincing dialect means randomly switching half your lines to first year-level Spanish.

Meanwhile, Mignola writing by himself on the recent The Midnight Circus was as excellent as you'd expect, and it's always a treat to return to Hellboy's younger years. Fegredo and Stewart do a great job of selling the dreamy mysteriousness of the circus and its demonic performers. The wait between these big books seems interminable but the payoff is always worth it.

Oh no doubt. Every story written by Allie has been mediocre with very few exceptions. I don't think I've read anything by him that rose above that level.

I read based on what you wrote and found it very interesting. I like weird fantasy settings so it has that going for it. The art is pretty murky in places, but I didn't find it detracting. Interested in where it goes next.

I also read Manifest Destiny. Gorgeous art, fun alt-history supernatural goodness.

Regarding the Sex Criminals hoo-ha, it was pointed out on here that while issue 2 wasn't available to buy via the Comixology app, you could just buy it from their website then download it onto your iOS device via My Purchases afterwards. Presumably this will still be the case for issue 3..?

I'm pretty sure it is always the case that you can buy something on the website and download it to your device of choice. It's just a bit more effort than clicking BUY and being done with it.

Despite being way less dense information-wise than the previous two issues, Sex Criminals #3 turned out to be just perfect.

It really is the Fraction/Zdarsky twitters in comic form, I love it.

I understood that there was going to be another story focusing on the daughter out reasonably soon. Not done by Pope, but at least approved by him and in the same universe.

I didn't find it as good as I was hoping.

Too much use of "voiceover"...

in little fragments...

in every panel...

of every page...

that kept ending...

in something profound like...

I really shouldn't have...

meddled in black science!

onefish
Jan 15, 2004

Agreed with Hedrigall -- loved the art on Black Science, really liked the premise, ultimately let down by the writing. The voiceover worked for the 5-page preview, but over the whole issue, it grew wearisome, and there was very little character definition, even for the main character. If future issues are well reviewed, I'll keep reading for a few -- maybe this was a "pilot episode" problem.

But I was hoping for this to be a favorite new comic, and I like a whole bunch of other early-stage ones more: Rat Queens, Umbral, Sex Criminals, Manifest Destiny, Three (though that's not ongoing), even Afterlife With Archie.

Honestly, Remender only occasionally hits for me, I think. Previews for Deadly Class looked really fun, too, but I'm tempering expectations now.

Is Five Fists of Science worth picking up for $10? I like most of what I've read by Matt Fraction (Hawkguy, Immortal Iron Fist, Iron Man, and FF), and the concept reminds me a bit of Tales from the Bully Pulpit, which I loved. But I think I'm the one guy who doesn't enjoy Manhattan Projects, so I'm not sure if it's anything like that.

I didn't think it was bad, but I also didn't think it was particularly extraordinary. It kinda felt like a dumbed down version of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen or something.

It's fun, early Fraction. $10 seems high--if you can find it for cheaper, go for it.

Thank you all for the warning. It definitely sounds like something I can wait on.

I asked because I have quite a bit of store credit at a local used bookstore that has a decent graphic novel selection. They list almost all their stock online, so I was able to browse titles and prices before going there, and they had Five Fists listed for $10.

I didn't actually see it at the store today, but you guys talked me out of buying it anyway. However, I did walk away with Action Heroes Archives Vol. 2 (the hardcover collection of Ditko's Captain Atom, Blue Beetle, and Question stories for Charlton Comics; $75 marked down to $25) and the complete Deadenders TPB by Ed Brubaker ($30 marked down to $15), all for free, and I still have over $20 in credit remaining.
