That's amazingly subtle, but mine do look like that upon closer inspection. I wonder if they'd originally planned to have more black and yellow swirled in.

There's about 20 minutes left on Journey Wrath of Demons. It's second expansion has unlocked, but honestly I'd prefer to see if I enjoy the base game before throwing in for spider demon ladies or samurai skeletons.

Received my copy of Battlecon: Devastation of Indines. It had already been shipped to me before I saw the creator's email that said I could hold off until the bonus stuff came in.

So many components! Lots of stuff to punch out and it's high quality. I already know the base game is good, but I'm really excited to see how this dungeon crawler mode is. Can't wait for the bonus content to ship out.

Quite aside from the legality (which strikes me as extremely questionable), I'm not wild about the design of the project in general. Only the maximum tier gets stretch goals, supposedly (and that's the only thing you're paying for at that level, so the value of that tier will vary dramatically depending on how many goals they hit), but then later they list at least one goal as being for anyone getting the core set, and they say all of these things will be free addons. What? :stare:

edit: ^^^^^ oops. Sorry.

Just got finished organizing all my Indines stuff. I was hoping there would be enough room in there to put my older cards, but no such luck. You've really got to fiddle around with the little organizing pouches to get them to fit in right, but they do. They're a bit fragile, though, and I had to tape a bunch of them. They'll get to looking pretty rough pretty quick as much as they've got to cram in there. It's possible that the tokens (which are awesome) are too thick.

Right now it's all HELL YEAH HEROQUEST! pledges, which will likely evaporate when there's a C&D or when people realize it's safer to just buy the thing if/when it comes out.

I knee-jerk pledged $158 for everything a few hours ago, but I've already gone down to $1 / no reward. I want to stay subscribed to the updates, but this looks like it's going to be a mess.

Leperflesh
May 17, 2007

In case anyone's curious: the biggest problem is the use of the trademarked name of the game. Game rules are generally not subject to copyright, and the designers can avoid the copyrighted parts of HeroQuest by not re-using any of the artwork or flavor text. Although it looks like they've re-used the box cover artwork, at least in the kickstarter.

But they are definitely attempting to sell a game under a trademarked name, and I'm guessing they're under the belief that this game name isn't trademarked in Spain, and/or in the EU, and also that they therefore won't run afoul of a lawsuit. I suspect they're either partially or entirely incorrect on the former count, and for the latter, I suspect they'll get a C&D pretty quickly and then have to weigh whether or not they've got the money to afford to fight a lawsuit.

Then of course there's the question of Kickstarter potentially receiving a C&D; if they do, and I'd expect them to, I'd expect them to take down the HeroQuest KS immediately.

So there's a lot to potentially go wrong here, and the organizers don't immediately appear to have an ironclad response to the above potential problems.

e. Apparently, the company does hold a trademark for the name "HeroQuest" in Spain. I'm not convinced that will keep them safe, though, since they're not just copying the name HeroQuest, but also the logo. Trademark protection is not just about the letters in your product's name, it's about being protected from others "trading on" your mark. That is, selling things that a reasonable person would assume came from you, because the packaging, advertising, etc. looks too much like your own packaging, advertising, etc. Game Zone may have registered "HeroQuest" in spain, but that's not necessarily going to convince a judge, if they appear to be deliberately trying to gain sales by mimicking someone else's trademark.

Then again, I don't know what the law specifically is like in Spain, and I don't know if Spain's EU membership alters that (e.g., if a Spanish company infringing on a trademark registered in the UK, Germany, etc. can be sued in Spain, or if some other EU court would have both jurisdiction, and any ability to enforce a penalty.)

One of my gaming friends has gotten in on this, looks to be a fairly decent range of historicals in 15mm/18mm and a ruleset (but let's face it, 15mm historicals.. there's a whole host of rules out there you could use them for)

I'm tempted but there's so many decent kickstarters demanding my attention and in the run up to Christmas, money is always tighter than usual. I'm hoping heroquest doesn't fall foul of legalities, it's something I'd love to see made (and a perfect game to stash on the shelves for my kids when they're older) but it might be a case of waiting for it to go retail before throwing money at it.

Interestingly enough the Glorantha creator Greg Stafford owns the trademark in the United States so I don't even know how that would work as its technically a violation here too.
EDIT:
I'm guessing that is probably the reason why the Kickstarter is in Canadian dollars and some of the websites are hinting towards it.

Who's this Little
Spaghetti?? ??
My brother and I played through a quick game of Devastation of Indines (arrived yesterday!), one round each with all the Novice characters. When even the most basic of the basic characters get me and my brother pumped about the game, well, it gets me excited to touch the other 90% of the content.

The Novice heroes are definitely no slouches. I was initially a little worried the tiered system might mean some of the higher heroes are just up and out stronger, but then King Alexian hit the field and obliterated everything in front of him. Karin and Jager are a blast, the wolf-ally mechanic is fantastic and entirely intuitive and her cards are creative and crazy. All of the Novice heroes seemed pretty on par with each other, except for the dragon princess. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with Marmelee to really stop my opponent - Pendros walked all over her and ended the game with only 3 damage, and I feel like all the other Novices would have similar results against her. It's kinda weird how underwhelming she is when the other 5 fighters are all gloriously effective at what they want to do. I feel like I must be missing something.

That said, that's only one character out of 36. I think I'll be entirely fine if she doesn't see much play. If I'm teaching people how to play for the first time and they want a Specialist type character to work with, I'll just throw Runika at them, she seems pretty cool from what I've seen, and her gimmick isn't too complicated.

For those of you wondering about storage issues, I've come up with what I think is a pretty great solution. I took pics with my phone, but they're taking ages to upload because Sprint does that sometimes. I'll post pics when they are on my computer.

I think the storage works as they intended, it's just a little tight. I divided the five flights of characters into five of the six bins and then used the sixth for the common cards, sticking the various boss fights in the same sections as the flights with which they were packaged. They could have probably spared another quarter inch of width on the bins and gotten away with it just fine.

Did anyone order the little flick-duel game variant? I relented and am kinda regretting it because this dude put so much soul in here I just want to keep funneling him money.

Got mine yesterday. The little envelopes for each character aren't large enough to also hold their tokens, which is kind of a downer. So I've stuck each one into a 3" by 6" ULine 2mil plastic bag.

Gonna go challenge that dungeon with the vampire from the last game. Surely the best character to face huge piles of monsters is the one who has a penalty to damage on every attack!

Yes. They say that all core sets get all stretch goals but then have the sperate pledge level to get the stretch rewards. The whole kick starter struggles due to the poor English but they really need to clarify what you are getting and do something to suggest that they won't end up spending all of that money on the inevitable lawsuit

I'm generally willing to forgive poor English mastery, even in a rulebook, but in this case it's pretty worrisome since the legal interaction is all in English...

Leperflesh
May 17, 2007

From the kickstarter:

quote:

First stretch goal rewards any pledge that includes a core set

If you choose the third level pledge, as shown before, you will receive all the stretch goals rewards achieved during the crowdfunding.

All these stretch goals rewards will be given as FREE ADD-ONS.

My interpretation is that all of the pledge levels will get the first stretch goal, and then only the top level will get the following subsequent stretch goals. I'm not 100% sure about that, though, and also that's kind of stupid since it means everyone will wait to see what the stretch goals are and if they get achieved, before they upgrade to the highest level, which means they won't hit as many stretch goals because everyone is holding back.

Also they're saying that if you have a tier that receives stretch goals, you won't have to pay extra for them, e.g., they're not costs-you-money add-ons. Which should be obvious since you're paying extra for a tier with stretch goals, but there you go.

Most importantly, according to that thread on boardgamegeek, the rules won't be the classic HeroQuest rules! Presumably you could still get ahold of the classic rules and play that game using this game's pieces, but that's kind of a bummer. (The rules are the one part of the classic game that are clearly public domain, since you cannot copyright a set of game rules.)

On the other hand they're including a whole bunch of different player cards and figures, whereas the classic game came with only four. Maybe that could be really cool, assuming they're well-designed and reasonably balanced.

Personally I'm not pledging because I already have a copy of HeroQuest, but I'll be following this kickstarter just out of curiosity as to how the whole thing plays out.

Five days left to back the Pirate World Kickstarter!

Thanks to you guys RPG sourcebook for Dungeon World/ Fate Core is doing bloody awesome; we're at 400% (over £5000 raised so far!) and a huge chunk of that has come from SA referrals.

Here's the Kickstarter

I am SO EXCITED.

Here's what comes in the hardback, 180 page book with full page colour illustrations by a couple of awesome goons:

7+ classes. 6 completely new and one fan favourite: THE BRUTE! Each class has a third page too, filled with death moves, magic items, designer notes and space for describing your character in more depth.
tons of new races, from festering amphibs to massive crustaceans, and wonderful takes on the current races (soviet style dwarves, gunpowder-addicted goblins, volcano cultist lizardmen)
20+ BACKGROUNDS: a whole new system to customise your character from level 1 onwards. Now you're not just a Brute; you're a Brute Cultist, or a Necromantic Brute, or, perhaps scariest of all, a Cannibal Brute!
Beautiful illustrations+; both full page (Joseph Irizarry) and inset (Jonathan Choby). You can get a print of Joseph Irizarry's illustration separately, and they're stunning!
HIRELINGS: a total overhaul to the Dungeon World style. Hirelings are now unique creatures, with their own moves, personalities and styles. The book has a massive section on hirelings, and you can get your own character included!
LUNCHEON WORLD: A guide to streamlining Dungeon World so you can eat it over a sandwich, or play it online
And tons more+, including ship fighting, island discovery, brutal combat...
