Post your favorite or unfavorite flag, coat of arms or other symbols. From time to time there is a discussion about flags in the DnD picture thread so I thought there might be interest for a thread. Got to start somewhere so I guess I'll use the flag of my own state, Sweden, as a starter. Nothing say "modern, secular society" like a big honking crucifix on your flag. The "Scandinavian cross" design was borrowed from the Danes who had a head start in the nation-state game back in the Middle Ages. Supposedly the impetus was that the newly converted Scandinavians wanted to show foreigners that they were Christians and were not about to raid them like when they were Pagan Vikings.

Angola quote:The red is for the blood spilt by Angolans during their independence struggles, while the black is for the continent of Africa. The symbol in the middle is of a crossed cog wheel (representing workers and industry) and machete (representing the peasantry) with a gold star

The coat of arms of Bermuda: “Quo Fata Ferunt” means “Where the Fates carry us.” The ship is Sea Venture, which crashed into the island during a storm in July of 1609. It was on its way to Jamestown, Virginia, when it was separated from the other ships by the storm, and it began taking on water as it had just been built and the timbers had not been given enough time to set. It hit the island, and the 150 people aboard were stranded for nine months. In that time, they built two new ships from the wreckage of Sea Venture and from other wood on the island, and finally reached Jamestown in 1610. Bermuda has been a British territory ever since.

Polish towns are the best for slightly odd flags Ożarów's flag has a bear that doesn't know why the hell it continues to put up with this poo poo. Sanok's coat of arms has an eagle with the head of Woodstock, a pissed-off snake eating a baby (the Biscione, also seen in Alfa Romeo's badge) and an angel with a flaming sword subjugating a demon. The flag of Libya prior to Gaddafi being toppled is kind of interesting in how very dull it is.

Flag of the city of Cusco, former capital of the Incas. It may be an ancient style, that existed in the days of the Incas. I was there a couple years ago, and was surprised looking around seeing hundreds of those flags. I was thinking that Cusco was pretty progressive by South American standards Two more from South America, logos from the Brazilian Expeditionary Forces in WWII. A snake smoking a pipe And for a fighter wing, a mean old ostrich with a gun. The Portuguese phrase is a phrase that means something like "hit 'em hard!" canyoneer has a new favorite as of 04:53 on Nov 27, 2013 |

Oh, my head. Don't get me wrong, that's a loving awesome coat of arms. But picking out the one creature on the planet who regularly fells trees by biting them and giving it an axe seems vaguely insulting to the beaver. "What's that? You're still gnawing through trees with your mouth like some sort of dumb beast? Here, take this axe thing me and my fellow humans have put together. I think you'll find it's a lot more efficient than chewing. "

My ancestors crest whose name i still carry: Two snakes linked by what is supposed to be a golden and red band. From the picture i can barely tell they're snakes. I've seen other drawings of the same crest where the snakes look more like eagles, but they're supposed to be snakes/reptiles. Like in this one: Don't get why they botched the serpents so badly, Iberia has plenty of snakes and lizards. Falukorv has a new favorite as of 04:10 on Nov 29, 2013 |

Can someone tell me, I thought it was the case that there are no 'family' coat of arms, all coats of arms were awarded to specific individuals, and are not passed down to their sons or other descendants. Hence why all the 'Discover your noble coat of arms $9.99' websites are full of poo poo.
