Smythe posted:i didnt see this mfkers through to completion but it was one of the best gbs threads of all time. thnx i think it's still going in bss also the earthsea books are technically young adult novels, i first read them in junior high. they're still very good but you know, context if you want real literature from leguin then start with the left hand of darkness or something also, i read somewhere that there was a tv movie made by some pbs affiliate of leguin's the lathe of heaven, and then later some cable channel did another one. has anybody seen either of them and are they any good?

on reflection, the hunt for red october (the film) has almost everything i look for in hard science fiction * a complete, functional universe with its own rules, jargon etc. * everything's explained, but never dumbed down. the audience has to pay attention * highly competent characters * plausible technology * the technology's capabilities/limitations drive much of the action all this plus it's a properly tense thriller with a great story and fun character moments and memorable dialogue nothing not to like

Goddamn why did I wait so long to watch Colossus: The Forbin Project!? Awesome 70s scifi with the era's usual ambiguous good/bad ending. Don't think I've seen an earlier film deal with a Singularity event.

just watched the die hard episode of almost human it's a decent show i guess but i feel like they're just writing generic cop story scripts and then doing find/replace on them to insert references to future tech. nothing i've seen so far really feels like the future in the sense that it's some sort of plot that could only happen based on the implications of some technology. meh i'll keep watching; the interaction between robocop dredd and i,robot is entertaining enough

I used a 'If you liked that...' type site to see what else I might not have seen from the 70s apocalyptic scifi genre, it threw up 'The Martian Chronicles 1980'; @ the first line of the synopsisquote:Earth sends its first manned probe to Mars in 1999, and a jealous Martian murders the two astronauts when his wife has erotic dreams of meeting them. welp, gotta see that at least
