What's the best game that's like Heroes of Might and Magic? Last one I played was 3 and I loved it. Surely someone has improved on the formula since then?

King's Bounty series are like HOMM except free roaming with one hero, with quests and other RPGish stuff. They are really good games, pretty, sometimes funny, and most accessible for sure. You might start with first one, the Legend, and skip Armored Princess in favor of Crossworlds which is an improved version of it.

Eador is kind of a hybrid between HOMM and Master of Magic. There's HOMM style tactical combat, and LOTS of it, but there's also an overworld strategical game that is actually implemented really well. There are two Eador games - Genesis is the original with ~HOMM3 level graphics, while Masters of the Broken World is 1:1 remake with better graphics but worse interface. If you're not a graphics snob, I'd recommend Genesis from GOG or so.

Disciples 2 was my original HOMM substitute. The overworld game resembles HOMM, with resource management and conquest, while tactical combat is simplified. It has tons of character though, with great art style and good gameplay. Haven't played Disciples 3, but the reviews weren't good on that one.

Starcraft 2 really is the only one with a sizeable MP community, sadly, even if I feel its gameplay is kind of outdated. It's very simple, but that's by design.

CoH had a somewhat disappointing sequel. It's not terrible, but it's not at the same level as the original.

There's also Airland Battle, but that's a very different beast from the games you're describing.

MP community isn't too important, usually I just LAN them with friends or play the single player campaign if it's any good so you don't have to limit your suggestions based on that. The setting of Airland Battle seems pretty cool so I'll check it out. Thanks for your help!

Airland Battle has an awesome sandbox style campaign as well.

CoH 2 I'd recommend avoiding, mostly because it's a bit of a system hog that might have issues on your setup.

Having played all of the Stalker games for the first time recently, I really don't get the hate for Clear Sky. The bugged-out faction system made things a little wonky at times but other than that I thought it was pretty enjoyable. I did play with the Complete patch though which may be coloring my opinion though, since I gather it cleans up the base game a lot.

All three are worth playing IMO. The third is definitely the most polished, but the first two feel more open-world.

MOBAs have definitely ate into the market MP-wise, being a lot easier to pick up and play compared to most RTSes. There's simply a lot less to keep track of compared to, say, a SC2 match (and that's the simpler RTS compared to the stuff companies like Relic put out.)

There's also the simple fact RTS games are extremely hard to do on consoles whereas you can do a MOBA on one (I'm actually surprised we haven't heard rumours of a DOTA or LoL port even if the games would need quite a bit of adjustment to work on consoles.)

Hi guys, looking for a game again. This time I fancy a business/building simulation of sorts, something in the vein of the old Theme Hospital and Rollercoaster Tycoon or Tropico 4 (which I have played to death now); also something more trade-oriented like Port Royale could be good.

Both serious and silly games are OK, but I'd love it to be a middle ground: neither too easy and idiot-oriented (e.g. Sid Meier's Railroads), nor extra-realistic, complex and utterly difficult.

Startopia's what you want I think. It's a space station management sim with some obvious dungeon keeper influence. It's on both steam and gog.com and runs very well on modern systems though you won't want to crank the resolution too high or the text might be unreadable.

If you want something with more trading there's the ANNO series (I really like 2070 for the scifi aesthetic, but others prefer the more historical prequels.) The supply/trade/economic side of this series can be a bit daunting however.

There's also Tropico 4 (splurge on the complete edition for a few extra bucks when it goes on sale on steam as the modern times expansion is almost essential.) It's basically a lighthearted Fidel Castro simulator with you managing a series of tropical island nations. There's (fairly simple) trading and supply chains involved, but it runs parallel to keeping your people happy (or at least repressed to the point they won't rebel) and even tourists to handle. Tropico 4 is like my 4th most played game on Steam and it's because the content is not only addictive but there's tons of it. There's a great sense of humour running through (all of the significant characters are basically caricatures from the cigar chomping Generalissimo to the Russians who mostly want to import guns and alcohol.)

It's really a steal when the complete edition goes on sale for less than 20$.

I can't play Tropico 4 anymore, I have spent far too much time in the Generalissimo's shoes. I still uncontrollably hum the theme song from time to time, annoying everybody in the house.

Startopia definitely looks like it's worth a try! Also Evil genius, but it looks too similar to Dungeon Keeper rather than a building and business game. Nothing wrong with that, but I'd like something more like Tropico 4...

I'll check on Anno 2070, but I remember playing one of the earlier ones and finding it rather boring... luckily it's one of not many games that have a demo these days :) Thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming :D

Patrician is similar to Port Royale, and not ridiculously complex. Once you get your trade routes set up you can start focusing on price fixing and running your competitors out of their towns.

I think the consensus is that gameplay-wise its better but when it comes to the writing and actual role-playing KOTOR 2 utterly blows 1 out of the water.

The combat is really lovely and even worse than KOTOR 2, though I guess the game is less buggy and such. It's very much a Bioware game. If you've had good experiences with something like, say, Jade Empire or Mass Effect(especially the first because the gameplay is particularly incompetent), you'll like KOTOR. If you don't like those games, I say skip it.

Addendum: I should mention that the combat is very put-up-with-able, it's just not engaging or challenging at all.

Plus KOTOR 1 has a really cool plot twist in it that I thought was really neat at the time. There's also some pretty interesting stuff you can do if you go Dark Side in KOTOR 1. What I'm really saying is play both KOTOR 1 and 2.

I'm looking for a game with a nice big world to explore, but that also has great combat. I enjoyed Guild Wars 2 but am getting a little tired of it, the usual sandbox suspects (Skyrim, GTA) have combat that I really just can't stand. Does anyone have any suggestions? Does such a game exist?

I did just really enjoy ME2 and ME3, so great gameplay along with a nice story would also be great, but in my experience story is even harder to find along with good combat.

The Witcher 2 doesn't have the biggest world, but has great combat. It's divided into 3 acts, each of which feature a reasonably large area (village plus forest outskirts, for example).

There's a main path through the game with a lot of optional areas. The main path is often not well signposted though.

The early areas are a fairly typical medieval castle, and after that there is a lot more variation in both atmosphere and aesthetics.

There's a few more open areas, but most of the game is built around narrow pathways due to how the combat works. Also be warned the PC version uses GFWL which is shutting down next year (you'll lose the interesting online features, but the game should work offline.)

The controller is completely essential. I'd compare the structure of the world to something like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. There are tons of nooks and crannies and secrets. There are actually secret zones that you could conceivably never find.

Steam controller is pretty clearly not meant to take the place of a traditional gamepad. A lot of games will now release on PC and not even bother to make KB/M remotely playable because they know you'll have a controller and it's not worth the effort.

Just finished :darksouls: the first time. There are few huge areas, and the world isn't incredibly huge per se, but it never felt cramped. Mainly because every fight is an event and a danger, so this game makes EXCEPTIONALLY efficient use of world geometry. What would take minutes to run through in a regular hack and slash game like Darksiders, might take hours in Dark Souls if you're doing it the first time. Still, it's interesting how the areas kind of tie together, like when you look down a cliff in some area you can recognize other areas you've been in in the distance, and may find shortcuts there.

A controller is essential. On the other hand, I'd say Dark Souls is a game that really justifies the purchase, too. It's doubly tough if you start out as someone not used to gamepad controls as such, but at the same time you would emerge skilled in the end. Just get the X360 controller, I don't think it's worth holding out for Steam pad which is meant to replace the mouse, anyway.

Yeah I'd have to learn a controller too, and I guess it just feels strange to pay more for a controller than the game I want to play. But I hear Brother: A Tale of Two Sons is pretty awesome as well and needs a controller so I might just pony up!

I've had another sudden surge of interest in racing games recently, to the point where I'm seriously considering getting a racing wheel for my desktop.

I'd like decent customisation. Controller/wheel support.
I have NFS Hot Pursuit, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Grid 2, Driver San Franscisco. I loved the Gran Turismo games on Playstation, and the Forza games on Xbox, but I'm after something for PC.

I was considering NFS Shift 1 & 2 and Dirt 3. Maybe Burnout Paradise, since I had it on Xbox and it was okay, and I have some friends who still play it together on PC. Also that Trackmania game? Is that any good? Bear in mind I'm not a big multiplayer guy, I tend to stick to career modes and SP in my racing games.

I have exactly zero interest in F1 racing, motorbike racing or NASCAR though.

Assetto Corsa http://www.assettocorsa.net/en/ or iRacing http://www.iracing.com/ for simulators. iRacing is online only, but the racing is good and the ingame system encourages clean races. For older, standalone games, there's the RaceOn/Race07 games on Steam. Touring car focus, but great driving feel.

The NFS: Shift series is decent, but you'll need to mod it a bit to get actual responsive steering out of it since they have controller lag built into the game for some reason. Mod that out and it's a competent enough racer. Dirt and Burnout are best played with a controller, as they're really arcadey. Same with Trackmania. There's also no need to worry about the multiplayer in any of the Trackmania games, as it's all time trial based and there's no collisions with other cars on track. I'm like you not really a big multiplayer fan, but Trackmania is just too damned fun.

As for wheels there's only a handful of good options unless you want to drop a load of money. The Logitech Driving Force GT is the entry-level wheel of choice, should run you about $120. Up from that there's the Logitech G27, currently listed at $320 but it tends to go on sale often, so keep your eye out. Beyond that there's Fanatech and the high-end Thrustmaster wheels, but even the most basic setup with them is $5-600 and up, depending on options.
