Well, that, and it wasn't really until I was out of school for a while before I realized just what exactly was going on. Also I think kids that look to outside sources for supplemental learning (which, let's face it, if you went to public school and you came out reasonably well-educated, you probably did a lot of this) are more likely to see the bullshit for what it is.

Did you school have the same version where the like, first half was in English and then 2 lines in French and then the big finale in English?

Only two languages in your National Anthem? You're not even trying: how about five languages in a mix of two songs in two keys :vuvu:

Anthems have to be a marathon! You can't make one that just anyone can stand up and haphazardly throw out there like it's some poppy One Direction song

I dunno, I come from crazy privilege and went to a nice public school and my critiques of the system are clearly constrained while also being the sort of Steinbeck fire breathing commie discusses earlier.

It still sorta sounds like "our enemy is simultaneously all powerful and controlling while also weak". I'm aware the Prussian system from which it originates was built to create obedience but I've met so many good teachers who used a system with a really poor foundation to do some good anyway.

I'm all for reforming the public school system since it's total poo poo, but the brainwashing stuff always seems sort of hypocritical since naturally the people proclaiming it are the ones who resist the brainwashing somehow.

A brainwashing attempt can be poo poo for effectiveness and still be a brainwashing attempt. My high school education on America's foreign policy was jingoistic and abysmally bad, and it's a tautology that those who recognize how biased something is are the ones proclaiming the bias exists. I got a better education on our fruit company adventures in Latin America from readings in my Spanish class than I did in American History.

It's not Ur fascism to say that American History and mandatory pledges in schools is intended to indoctrinate rather than to educate, even if it turns out that it's ineffective at indoctrination and education both.

Grimey Drawer

quote:

Linda Burnett, 23, a resident of San Diego, was visiting her in-laws and while there went to a nearby supermarket to pick up some groceries. Later, her husband noticed her sitting in her car in the driveway with the windows rolled up and with her eyes closed, with both hands behind the back of her head. He became concerned and walked over to the car. He noticed that Linda's eyes were now open and she looked very strange. He asked her if she was okay, and Linda replied that she had been shot in the back of the head and had been holding her brains in for over an hour. The husband called the paramedics, who broke into the car because the doors were locked and Linda refused to remove her hands from her head. When they finally got in, they found that Linda had a wad of bread dough on the back of her head. A Pillsbury biscuit canister had exploded from the heat, making a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot, and the wad of dough hit her in the back of her head. When she reached back to find out what it was, she felt the dough and thought it was her brains. She initially passed out, but quickly recovered. Linda is a blonde, a Democrat, and an Obama supporter, but that could all be a coincidence. The defective biscuit canister was analyzed and the expiration date was from 2008, so it was determined to be Bush's fault.

'Debate' groups are hilarious. They always seem to have been started by a group of people holding one specific ideology, and rather than being interested in actually debating anything, they want to invite specific pre-approved members of the opposition, one by one, to either bury them under a deluge of crap or ban them if they start making too much sense. It's just a means of reinforcing preexisting beliefs rather than actually gaining greater understanding of your opponent or anything.

I didn't have to wait long for them to drop the "not racist" business – having an ethnic last name was enough to get the slurs flowing. It appeared to be cynical trolls and high-schoolers locked in a perpetual, unwinnable war with no stakes whatsoever. Fun!

Try joining a Mormon "political debate" group, if you're a non-Tea Partier Mormon. They literally believe that anyone who's even slightly to the left of them are godless, ignorant socialists. It's worse if you're a believing Mormon, but you're a Bernie Sanders type politically (as I am). They will accuse you of seeing Obama as the Messiah, they'll say that you're twisted by Satan's lies, call you ignorant, and so forth. It's more painful hearing that kind of rhetoric coming from a fellow Mormon.

Of course, there's small (though reasonably sized, about 300-400 members, and 150 "active" members) Mormon Democrat groups, but most of them are strident Obama fans, so even though they trust a leftist Mormon, if you don't like Obama either...

Seriously, considering that you can send most firearms in your stow luggage with no issue. Just no ammo.

I've actually heard people checking firearms on purpose to reduce the chance that your luggage is lost. Just pack a starter pistol (for track meets, etc) which the TSA counts as a weapon, but you don't need a license to buy one.

quote:

A "weapons" is defined as a rifle, shotgun, pistol, airgun, and STARTER PISTOL. Yes, starter pistols - those little guns that fire blanks at track and swim meets - are considered weapons...and do NOT have to be registered in any state in the United States.

I have a starter pistol for all my cases. All I have to do upon check-in is tell the airline ticket agent that I have a weapon to declare...I'm given a little card to sign, the card is put in the case, the case is given to a TSA official who takes my key and locks the case, and gives my key back to me.

That's the procedure. The case is extra-tracked...TSA does not want to lose a weapons case. This reduces the chance of the case being lost to virtually zero.

It's a great way to travel with camera gear...I've been doing this since Dec 2001 and have had no problems whatsoever.

I always found the hard-right political leanings of most church members extremely bizarre when I was still a member, considering that the early church was pretty much communist in all but name. Even today it has a pretty sizable array of social welfare programs funded by tithes from members. My dad is devoutly Mormon and an outspoken liberal Democrat, but he's definitely an outlier, and the only socialist church member I ever encountered was myself.

Or share pictures of dead soldiers with anti war slogans. I think that's closer to matching their logic than gunshot wounds and is free from "how do you know that person wasn't shot while robbing someone?" or whatever asinine counter they are bound to come up with. The only exposure to dead soldiers most Americans get are anonymous flag draped coffins, which makes it real easy to continue supporting war.
