I use Ableton 8 and whatever neat plugins I can get my hands on. The reason the drums are so low in the mix is, on a lot of Madvillainy songs, such as All Caps, I noticed that the drums seem to hit a lot lower than other hip-hop artists. I was experimenting trying to figure out how Madlib did it, but I obviously failed, hah. Could anyone provide some insight? I also realize I mixed everything to low in general, so I definitely won't make that mistake again. Madlib/Doom/Dilla had/have this on lock. e: I remember in that red bull interview tip did he said the thing that blew him away when he heard Dilla was that the EQ was so perfect every drum and sample had its own little spot like they were designed to be in that beat. Have them send you vocal takes with whatever mic setup they have. Hopefully they know what they're doing there. Get a couple vocal takes of all the main stuff and get an adlib track. Use a cloud storage service like Copy to trade wav files.

Lately I've been having a problem where some days I'll sit down at my DAW and nothing I try inspires me and I just get really frustrated - every drum pattern I come up with is crap, every chord progression and every sound or instrument is crap, but then some days I can just slap stuff together and it all comes together and is really fun. I guess it's just par for the course, and as I improve these problems might subside a little.
