Every time I see one of those "SEE THE POWER OF BLU-RAY" promos on a Sony disc that features a clip of The Brothers Solomon, I get really sad. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one.

For some reason, it wouldn't let me use my Prime but $18.94 for all 8 movies is still a steal. Thanks! Call Me Charlie fucked around with this message at 15:23 on Dec 2, 2013 |

I picked up a few $4 blu-rays from Best Buy and some cheap Ghibli blu-rays from Amazon, but otherwise it's been pretty meh this year.

Partially this, but the $1.96 DVD selection seemed larger this year, so I wonder if they didn't realize that was the draw for the majority of the media buyers and slightly raised blu-ray prices to subsidize that.

The 4K remasters of Casablanca, Ben-Hur, and Citizen Kane are pretty much flawless. The only nitpick would be stuff like the 1925 version of Ben-Hur and RKO 281 not being in HD. Besides the incredible restorations, the 5.1 mix on Ben-Hur is mind-blowing. Apparently, the DVDs used a 5.1 remix from scratch while the Blu adapts the original 6-track mix much more closely.

I don't recall the R-rated version very well... I heard the argument that it was more horrifying in a way because you don't see some of the violence and your imagination made it worse. What do you guys think?

The ED-209 boardroom sequence in the unrated version is amazing black comedy. The restored shots make it hilariously violent. I think Murphy's death scene is far more uncomfortable and unpleasant in the unrated cut, too.

One could make that argument, since the over-the-top violence tips the hand of the movie's comedic/satirical edge. Dial it back a bit, and it becomes more realistic and therefore more disturbing.
