We have student workers who don't always follow directions or have their own weird interpretation of what they were told but gently caress me, nothing is consistently labeled here. Nothing on the patch panels or wall jacks are labeled and all the computers are some horrible mix of Lab1, Lab01, Lab01-Swap, Lab001-New-Replacement, etc, etc. It drives me up the wall. I swear a third of the patch panels in my buildings (elementary schools) are labeled with staff names or job functions. Most of those staff no longer work there or work in the same place. And I'd kill for a single year where room assignments weren't shuffled. "Oh, no, Kinder-1 isn't the drop in Kindergarten. It was the Resource Room last year, and now it's LAP. Kindergarten's drop is labeled Nancy, though she retired three years ago and Jenny's teaching the class. And ignore K2-K4; we think those got cut and their replacements are just hanging right here since there's no room in the panel." And nothing is labeled on the room end. If we're lucky there's an 'X' or a dot to indicate which is the analog phone jack (or it follows our convention: bottom right). I was recently reminded of something else I hate: tape. Staff members who decide to do their own 'cable management' with scotch, masking, or duct tape. I don't think I've seen tape not leave a horrible residue after a few years of sitting. Even if the masking tape is so old it's disintegrating, the adhesive is tenacious. Luckily hand sanitizer is everywhere in schools now and it does a reasonable job at getting that poo poo off your hands.

As it happens, I do in fact have one thing to bitch about. We have a bank of batteries that we "float" on in case of power failure. This means that we also have a bank of 48VDC inverters. Those inverters happen to be right on the other side of the wall from my cube, so I have this lovely, constant 60hz buzz. I asked one of my coworkers how long it takes to get used to it. He laughed. I'm trying to come up with a creative way to block the noise...

I think I am starting to get depressed because of all the resignation of my boss over complaints, but his happiness to punish and insult me for all the things I didn't even do wrong. It also appears that a majority of coworkers are actively conspiring to sabotage me and tell my boss how I'm trying to get them to do my work, while I actually had to handle a whole day's business on my own because all of them sat in their office and simply refused to go out and handle any incidents. I have no idea what to do to let my boss know that I am, in fact, working and probably more than most of my direct coworkers within the 15 minutes we see each other in the morning meeting. It appears that "supposedly great" coworker is now being taken out of daily life to join my boss for who-knows-what and is talking serious slack in a subliminal way so my boss is taking that as fact. Doesn't help that "manager" (who shares an office with the boss) generally likes to tell him that we all don't do any work ever. I tried bringing this sorta think up in private before, when the boss wanted to ban me from any interesting work after I refused to clean a dusty shelf because of allergies, he didn't even consider this a real issue for me, no, I was simply trying to get out of work. So I talked to him in private and he let me know how he was "seeing me put my workload onto coworkers". We don't have a ticket system or anything (too small/boss' mindset) and he literally never sees any of us work so how he feels to have surveyed this is beyond me. I'm guessing it's what "manager" and sg coworker are telling him. When I told him that he must have a wrong impression he just told me to "prove it to him". Seriously, I just wanted to cry today after he told me that I supposedly hosed up by not telling him about an issue that I told the person in charge about as well as the doctor who then complained to my boss anyway, even tho he agreed to delay it a day. I'll better end it here since I'm just rambling now, I just really don't know what the gently caress to do anymore. HR would just tell my boss off, who then in turn would make my life hell (even more). Any advice welcome. Can't for another 2 years so...

(I bought a Vizio Ultrabook and it came with Windows 8 Signature edition. After I upgraded to 8.1, I could not install my Media Center. I downgraded, tried again, and failed. When I called, they told me I needed a Windows 8 Pro to add Media Center onto, and got me a key for FREE! I installed that, installed Media Center and upgraded to 8.1 with no issues.)

Start your own ticketing system. It can be as simple as an Excel spreadsheet - Date, Time, Incident#, Caller, Description of problem, Resolution and time spent working on the issue. Document any and all interactions, and if it's not illegal, invest in a digital recorder and when someone becomes an rear end whip that bad boy out and ask if they'd repeat that for the official record.

Then it got to the point where I didn't give a gently caress if my snoring bothered her, so hey. I think it's doable, though... Legal pad or some sort of paper solution would probably be best. Installing a ticketing system will have them complaining you're wasting so much time messing around with the software (even if it only takes minutes) and an Excel spreadsheet will have them complaining you're wasting so much time messing around in Excel. Paper is quick and easy, and no one remotely reasonable would argue with someone taking notes (but it sounds like they still will.)

Not entirely sure i'm in the right thread for this, but it involves some bitching so... Sounds like we're switching SANs from Pillar/Oracle, mainly because Pillar was awesome and Oracle can go stand on the side of the building while I drop the SAN off of it, and onto some executives heads. They're not fun, or useful, or anything of the sort. We're looking at Netapp and EMC (which seems kinda obvious, bigger names) and i'm curious who has experience, gripes, concerns, etc with any of these brands and how you generally feel about them.
