Mostly a balance patch.
Here are the highlights:

Looks like some huge overhauling for the better, I'd say.

The problem I have with the current system isn't figuring out how much damage I'll do, but my problem is the way you're always getting one-hit-killed in higher TL planets of your current tier even when you have the best armor, and also that armor and weapons are only useful against monsters in a ~3 level range. Both of these issues were really problematic. I'm worried that this change might be a bit too heavy handed. I hope they mark planets as easy/medium/hard like they do monsters instead of every planet being a grab-bag of different difficulty monsters. Or maybe it would be better that way with every planet having varied threats.

Hey, are you listening to a word I'm saying?
I wonder if this is going to change world gen at all. That system I posted earlier was a really great starting system. After I posted it I found out that another planet in the system has space pirates. Really had everything you needed.

On a side note, I wound up cheesing the UFO pretty easily. I dug a shaft straight down and just a bit too narrow for the UFO to fit through. It'll only drop down so far when it does its drop attack, so I waited at the bottom, shooting upward the entire time. I placed some blocks over me so penguins couldn't teleport right on top of me and shot straight up through it like in Space Invaders. It finally died about half a screen above me and I only had a couple dozen penguins to clean up once I got myself out of the really deep, wide pit I was left with.

Now that I know there's nothing to lose with that patch coming, I think I'm going to try summoning bosses onto the avian pirate ships. The extra firepower would be nice.

I think the cold mechanic needs a reworking. Snow worlds are just a pain in a butt, and with the size of the universe there's no good reason to set foot on one other than masochism. I feel like the current subzero death worlds that require a campfire every 15 feet should be higher up in the difficulty tiers, with the lower difficulty coldworlds only requiring a torch or two to keep you warm. Maybe it could take closer to 2-3 minutes to freeze to death, instead of dying in 30 seconds unless you're juggling campfires too.

Went deep deep deep into my starting planet...ran into a Crimson Zone...then an Icy Zone (thankfully I had crafted the Winter Gear out of all the leather I had, so the cold was no problem. it's very nice not having to worry about it at night too.)

Enemies do get tougher the deeper you go, but I was kicking rear end and came out with a good amount of gold and silver, enough to get a gold pickaxe at least.

They to do somethign about how finicky falling through platforms is, it have to pay wayyy too much attention to them at the moment.

If I understand the update correctly, it sounds like it's balancing it as well. It even says that armor was the primary cause of a lot of balance issues. At the least, if they simplify it to just raw damage, it should be considerably easier for them to balance.

I've been playing the game for a while now and I think I understand most things, but there are still 2 things that I haven't figured out: dyes and the 3D printer. I haven't gotten either to work at all, and I don't know if they're just not functional or if I'm doing something wrong, and the wiki hasn't helped. Specifically with the 3D printer, I've tried to scan a bunch of different items but it doesn't work.

So, how do you kill that mothership anyway? It gets on my nerves that it disappears if you die to it (meaning that you have to get even more silver, iron, and copper to make the beacon again) and the fact that it's got like a ton of armor makes it a pain in the rear end to drop it.

Dyes don't work have a function right now other then as part of the recipe for the paint gun, which is tier three I believe. It paints certain background tiles.

The 3D printer also doesn't really work right now, but it's only used for cosmetic items.

My little hope is that I'll be able to craft copper WEAPONS (and hunting gear) on an Anvil. I got nothing practical to do with the most common metal except for make a copper pickaxe. The copper armor is all of 1 point more durable than the starting clothes on your back (Didn't really seem to help), and even if the Snow Gear gets nerfed into the ground I'd still probably use it over copper armor for being able to actually travel on a snow world or night time on a forest world without freezing to death.

Granted, I've not beaten, or even summoned the UFO at all. Casually exploring my starter forest world, and now the larger ice world it orbits around (Which has WAY more Iron and coal in the snow and slush than all my time on the forest world. I went from barely enough iron to scrape together an anvil and 2 bar iron "Pecker", to a Basic Shield (10 bars) and deciding what to use the 30 more bars I have for, will probably blow half it it on an Iron Bow and save the rest for later.

Speaking of heat, hopefully sometime torches will give light beyond after being placed. Having to blindly place torches in the dark is one thing (even if you can just hold down M1), but it's kind of jarring when a loose torch is completely dark.

Also, can you plant flowers yet? I don't want to pick all the pretty flowers on my ice world because it looks so nice.

Rain is the biggest offender as it makes the entire game chug to a crawl when it first starts. Like it has to load in the rain for the whole planet at once so it's having a heart attack.

Yeah, I realize this. I guess what I'm saying is that I liked the idea of having a progression within a tier. That there are dangerous worlds you have to stay away from until you get better gear. That's a good concept and I hope with the new system they're still able to keep that. It's just really extreme in the current version. I just got one hit killed on a threat level 18 planet while holding up a shield, with 15 armor. That's crazy. (I suspect the shield was bugged and not blocking, though, but still, that's really huge damage for such a small level gap)

Beta feedback:

-I'd like a way to use items in the inventory screen as opposed to putting them in my hand slots first.
-Armor system is...unbalanced to say the least. You have armor that's 3 levels below the enemy's level, and they instagib you because they now have a 4x multiplier for their damage. I think the granularity scale for calculated damage should be 20-25% per level over armor class instead of a multiplier. Damage for low-damage guns should be scaled accordingly (such guns are weird in that they're either extremely effective or extremely useless).
-Bosses have way too much health for how hard they are to kill.
-Guns should be craftable, and crafting weapons should generate random weapons instead of the crappy presets that are vastly inferior to most things you can find (in no small part due to the extremely lopsided armor system).
-Machine pistols, assault rifles, and shotguns need better damage. Right now they are the most inefficient things compared to non-automatic pistols and sniper rifles.
-Platinum and diamond should spawn in earlier tiers (platinum should spawn starting in the 11-20 tier, diamond for the 21-30 tier.) You have people facing off against bosses most likely with underpowered armaments, and what ends up happening is that people either have to cheese boss fights or get gear from the next tier over somehow, which isn't how the game should be played.

Today me and a bunch of friends played multiplayer and explored a desert planet with large bone-filled pits, which oddly this time had big nautilus shells in them. There was also a human bunker that was full of nice furniture and goodies we stole, but had a dimly room with big, red letters reading GET OUT in either blood or paint. The consoles there, when I examined them, mentioned a plan to drain the planet's oceans and that it was "thankfully vetoed". I have a feeling that didn't stop them :smith:

Later, there were mentioned of trying to find an amazing artifact of told power on the same planet, possibly why the oceans were drained. We haven't found it if it exists. I really like that you can just come across things like this, entire backstories for what at first seemed like unremarkable planets.

I think shields increase the damage you take in some cases. i.e. when I got hit by an enemy directly I took ~40, when I tried to block the hit the same attack from the same enemy oneshot me. :v:

How exactly are you reading the update? How I read it doesn't make it sound like they're removing the progression, just changing the way it works. The way it currently works is that there are ten sectors (I think) and planets with level ranging from 0-10, 11-20, etc. With the new system, instead it will be one threat level per sector but some planets would solely be populated by hard enemies.

The other thing copper can be used for is you can refine the ore into 5 pixels each, which... I had like 500 copper ore by that point, which gave me enough pixels to make villagers for my ship. Basically, once you make the things you want, never smelt more ore, just save it in a box and then refine it. Good times!

Shields, when activated, will actually set your armor class to the level you found them (and the game doesn't say what level they are), and since enemy level - armor class + 1 is the damage multiplier, you have comedy like that. The damage system in this game is pretty drat bad.

Man, I'm not sure how feasible it is but I feel like this game could really use some solid hot-join functionality once it matures. As in right-click your friend on steam, click join, and hop into their game without dicking around with server setup at all. Imagine being in a steam chatroom full of goons and being able to hot-join their SP game when they find something interesting or need help with a boss, it'd be a lot more fluid than the normal server setup.

I'll have to see how they plan on doing this rebalancing, by removing levels and such. I'm all for more dynamic health values and also absolute dps, but I'm afraid taking the granularity we have today would end up making the game and tiers way too uniform with only three levels of monsters per tier, instead of 13 as we have now. Also I still want to be one shot if I'm trying to take on ridiculous stuff way out of my league, like how I just ventured a max threat beta sector planet, dying several times to find a weapon that would carry my over the entire tier.

I think how it would work is that the average stat pool for the species in that zone will be calculated, and will be categorized within "easy, medium, hard" zones. I think they should add a zone tier beyond that ("very hard" or "extremely hostile"), for hellworld planets that are actually living eldritch abominations :v:

In addition to rolling species' stats randomly, some monsters should have Diablo-like "elite" modifiers that modify stats or grant them strong buffs and have a visual indicator of some sort.
