Hope that she'll manage to grow up and not be left alone as everyone else dies of zombies or old age? I'd rather have hope that Glenn and Maggie make more babbys. I mean it's not like there rest of the cast couldn't figure out how to procreate.

So I finally got the chance to hear Rick's native voice and it was in Church. He did a reading for the Barnardo's (A big UK children's charity) Christmas carol service at Westminster cathedral. It was pretty cool.

Goddammit for the life of me I can't remember when a baby died in battlestar, and I just watched that series a few months ago. To add some walking dead content, I don't agree that Shane was right about Randall, I think the only reason he expressed any interest in going back to the rape gang was because regardless of how lovely they were, they didn't waffle back and forth about executing him. It's been a while since I watched that episode so maybe I missed something in his dialogue, but I don't remember him being happy to go back to them because he enjoyed raping and pillaging, just that he enjoyed being put on his knees and a gun to his head even less. Rick's group went through the motions of killing him twice- by execution with a gun in the barn, and by leaving him on his own out in the zombie wasteland, which could be considered tantamount to execution depending on one's individual emotional strength. Six killing the baby had a deeper thing than just killing the baby. Six was the compassionate model & she was saving the baby the post-apocalyptic world she was going to help create. It actually does a lot for the character; the baby wasn't inherently sinful & deserving of the Cylons' wrath. She gave the baby a merciful end by quickly snapping its neck.

Which sums up the Rick/Shane conflict well. Shane didn't KNOW Randall would go back or Sophie was dead. He was proven right but it was still a judgment call on both parts. Rick and Shane both had valid points and fair opinions and some strengths in leadership, but their flaws and personal poo poo kept them from working together. And when Rick tried to get past the poo poo Shane through a wrench at his head and brought him into the woods to kill him. So you know, Shane's the bad guy even though he had some valid points and some strengths because he was a murdering psychopath.

The whole Randal thing should have never happened anyway. The dude shooting at them impaled his leg on a spike. Benevolence is shooting him so he doesn't get eaten alive; risking three lives to possibly save one is stupidity. Its clear the sort of conflict they wanted for the next few episodes (and there's a good story in there), but the convoluted set up ruins it and makes Rick look really dumb. The only saving grace was all goodwill Rick banked the previous episode as a competent capable leader who got them out of that bar alive. No surprise it was the best episode of season 2, and a contender for best of the series. Carl supremacy. He's got the pragmatism of Shane and the charisma of Risk, without the respective sociopathy or martyr complex. He already shot one dad, its long overdue for him to bitchslap the other and take over the group. I guess there'd be no show then. He'd just restart society and save the world and with time to spare for a nice cigar if Sheriff Jar Jar wasn't always getting in his way. Spoeank posted:It's your own fault you didn't start with 33. I never took it as being 'We're willing to kill babies' I thought it to be more of a 'You know on TV where Robots learn to love because of babies or something? That's not this show' But then of course eventually they ran out of poo poo to do and had the robots learn to love because of babies. Also they never did enough with the Cylons all believing in one god and the colonies in many, that was always something I felt was being built up for something good and then it just turned out the Cylons were right and there is one God and he loves the dancing robots.

I broadly agree with this, except I think there should have been some ambiguity, like they were raiders but everyone's got to raid, right? Sort of a foreshadowing of the governor's position(s)? Shane was loving crazy even if he was "right," just like Carol. "Right" in the survival sense is continually questioned (despite the unevenness of the writing on that question) as a thematic in the series.

I think I just fixed season 4a in my brain with the following episode order. 1, 2, 6, 3, 4, 7, 5, 8. It feels slightly less like a reboot, though I still feel they should have done his whole story as cold opens in each episode. I think you could probably also just open with episode 6, and then keep everything else in the same order. Just something that breaks up the "let's reboot the governor now and then kill him"

I'm of two minds about the mid-season finale. On one hand, I'm glad the Governor is dead. The new showrunner/writers salvaged as much as they could from that trainwreck of a character, for which they should be lauded. Then they let him die like he needed to do, which was good. On the other hand, I'm kind of pissed off that the prison was destroyed. A lot of people argue that the prison closed off story opportunities and made it boring, due to season 2 and the farm fiasco. I disagree - Season 2 was boring because the writers and showrunner were stupid and bad at their jobs. Early in the season we saw that we could have our cake and eat it too- we could have intense stationary 'domestic' storytelling at the prison, but we could also send group members out on traveling 'dynamic' story episodes. This flexibility made things more interesting. But now we've only got the one story type we can do now. Boring.

Given the group split, and what's "supposed" to come next from the comics, they have a huge amount of potential angles to approach this from. I'm sad to see the prison go but mostly from an in-universe sentiment. fake edit: I watched "Clear" again the other day and I'm so disappointed we didn't keep that actor on board.

"That actor", Lennie James is brilliant. Give Jericho a chance if you really like him. His character also gets better as the story progresses. IMDB doesn't list him as a guest actor for TWD S4, but I'd bet my hat on it we haven't seen the last of him when the series get renewed. (he will also probably die). Does he appear in the comics at all?

Yeah, Lennie James brought a ton of life and depth to a pretty bland comic character. And it really is James. The TV character and comic characters don't have enough of a difference to put the change on writing like Andrea, Shane, or Carol. Its all the actor doing some great work. With Low Winter Sun cancelled I'm once again crossing my fingers that he joins the Walking Dead cast full time.

Considering the difference between the comic version of the Governor from season 3 and the one we saw this season, I'd rather they abandon any guidance or ideas from the comic. Again and again they've had to somehow carve the terrible poo poo that spews from it (the Governor, Michonne) into something resembling goodness.
