I think once your Paragon meter is at 75% you can unlock those two spots.
The check you're talking about is probably the one with uhh, whatshisname, the Exogeni guy and I think it's the most difficult check in the entire game. Even final boss Saren only requires 10 points (either Charm or Intimidate) for the final check IIRC.

Saren only needs 7 on virmire, and 9 at the end game. Ethan Jeong is the only thing in the game that requires more than 9 intimidate, or more than 10 charm. You need 243 paragon to unlock the last tier, as compared to 83 for the tier before that.

For the big, easy to get decisions:
Background is 20 points
Rachni queen is 24
Wrex is 28
Doing all of the optional objectives on virmire is 20
The colonists are 32, but obviously you can't get that before jeong.

That's only 96. You have to pick up another 147 from side quests and incidental points from dialogue.

DrNutt posted:

^My god I've literally never missed that check. What's wrong with me?^

Hmm, I thought you could max charm once you get your specialization sidequest completed. I don't remember when that comes up though.

You get the specialization sidequest at level 20. But, that's independant of persuasion skills.
Were you intimidating him? That only needs 10 points, which is a lot easier to get.

So, I just picked up the trilogy cheap and was having a blast with it. Just finished my first playthrough of all of them. Is it worth it to buy that interactive comic thing that sets up events from ME1 and 2 for the third game. I'm not sure I wanna go back and play the other two again.

Also, I think I've found my spirit animal, and it is the Volus Engineer.

What platform are you on? If PC no. If on console less no than on PC but still not really. It only lets you change a few of the 'big' choices and sidequest stuff is left out.

The interactive comic is really, really bare-bones and you'll be missing a lot of stuff from anything but the most major decisions. If you're on PC, you're much better off just creating a modified savegame with Gibbed's savegame editor and setting all of the plot flags manually.

edit: I also had a weird bug in 3 the other night. Was playing through Leviathan on the mission where you go to pick up Ann. Yeah, I did that with an ME2 save instead. Ended up waffling on which Virmire survivor I wanted and whether to play Paragon or Renegade or etcetc in my usual fashion, but it did (eventually) work.

Given how often I start over I should reeealy set up a save that at least starts on Mars, instead of Earth. :v:

A ship like the Normandy but slightly worse, a specialist crew slightly more unstable and disloyal and having them trying to beat you to objectives throughout the game, taking down 1 or 2 of them as minibosses on the priority missions till you finally take kai leng on Cronus station.

That's a pretty good idea. Maybe roll the doppelganger quest or whatever from Citadel into it, with more wide-ranging carnage across the galaxy yielding rumors of an indoctrinated Shepard and leave Shepard questioning their own sanity until the big reveal. :allears:

This might actually have worked rather well if Cerberus' role was mostly limited to that instead of them having an entire army all over the galaxy fighting everybody else.

This is all well and good to laugh at but I find it to be very :smith:

I mean, I remember being really excited for Mass Effect 3 too, given that I preordered ME2 and loved it, but I ended up putting off buying it even though it came out right around my birthday cause I didn't have LIVE at the time and wanted to try the multiplayer (even though at the time I thought the idea of ME multiplayer was laughable and was wary of its impact on the story - ha!). I didn't end up getting LIVE until this year, but the news about the ending was really sad to me. It ended up not being as bad - to me anyway - but it was still disappointing all the same considering what it could've been.

Do you remember in Priority: Earth, when you saw that little glimpse of the armies you gathered listening to Hackett's speech, and you were all excited to see how'd they'd be used in the actual battle, and you kept waiting and waiting for a geth juggernaut to drop in or for a group of STG to save you, and then you realized that said glimpse was all you were gonna get?

Or being part of the giant battle with hammers and makos and soldiers and and ... Yeah so much coulda been done more in the end, but just wasn't there. I guess it was too video gamey to have Shepard with forces on a field just slaughtering things as long as possible before Harb shows him and let Joker get another run at a Reaper. I'll still look at ME4 when it comes but no way in hell will I blindly pre-order it like I did with ME3. Hell. Probly will get ME4 if they continue with another multiplayer aspect on it, that was easily worth the money for ME3.

And wasn't the audio for all those assets showing up in the final battle still buried in the game?

In a way, the whole thing makes me feel nostalgic for those group projects from high school where no one would really take control and you'd end up with something really unevenly executed and clearly slapped together towards the end that looks alright but falls apart under any sort of scrutiny.

There were unused voices for Jacob, Zaeed, and a geth shouting stuff in combat and Jack giving a pep talk to her squad. It was probably just off-screen radio chatter but I always thought it would have been neat if there was a tangible benefit to your allies, like they did with calling in friendly NPC troops to fight darkspawn mobs during the siege of Denerim in DA:O. Radio Wrex for help and he and Grunt come around the corner with a krogan squad screaming and headbutting.

It would have been so easy - there's combat animations, skins, weapons and effects for every single conceivable (and some bizarre) trooper in the multi already...

I was also really down on the multi before it came out. When the beta test arrived I doubtingly played it with a friend and my god! It was brilliant! It started great and evolved into something I consider the best horde mode multiplayer out there. Another few game types and it could have been an incredible game on its own. As it is, I probably put more hours into it than I did single player in one and three combined. (But not for long as I'm planning another completionist run of one)

He's never seen ME3 but I made it through that mess 1 and 3/4 times (and only that cause I missed Grissom Academy the first time) so it's hardly remarkable. My only complete playthrough had a dead Thane, Grunt, Kaidan & Tali iirc. Don't think Zaeed and Kasumi were around either.

There's a chance Wrex survived for 1 ME2 game cause I played that a shitload. Even when I have the option to talk him down in ME1 I don't on principle.

You can beat ME1 without picking up Wrex at all. This is the same as having him dead for ME2. You can also go pick him up after Virmire, and then go talk to him on the ship, and he'll talk about the conversation you had on Virmire.

Also, if you go to Virmire without Garrus, Wrex, or Liara, and you get through Virmire in a single session without dying, then you get two Talis in your party.
