I wonder what Breitbart is up to

quote:

Obama campaigned in 2007-8 on a promise to meet American enemies "without preconditions," and met and embraced the late Hugo Chávez of Venezuela in 2009. He has also pushed for negotiations with the Iranian regime--long before the current "moderate" president took power. President Obama seemed pleased to meet Castro, who also spoke at the memorial, and the handshake was broadcast live on television worldwide.

quote:

Other than enthusiastically shaking the hand of Cuban dictator Raul Catro, another bizarre moment for President Obama at Nelson Mandela's memorial service was when Obama was caught in a lighthearted moment taking what is known as a "selfie" with British Prime Minister David Cameron.
First Lady Michelle Obama, who doesn't look as though she approves, can be seen in the photo paying attention to the ceremony.

Somehow it makes all the sense in the world that at Breitbart a moment like that can simultaneously be lighthearted and bizarre. I think the real shock is that they recognized it as lighthearted instead of just jumping right to "HE'S DANCING ON MANDELA'S GRAVE! Gotta wait for the last Cuban diehards in Florida to pass on or until Florida is no longer a toss-up state with a crap load of electoral votes. Or for us to switch off the Electoral College system.

Rush Limbaugh is melting down. He literally said 'there was a time when America had a quality of leader that would not associate with whatever is going on there in South Africa.'

I knew whether or not Obama went to the memorial service and if he spoke or did not speak, Rush would spin it. This just made me chuckle.

He did actually point this out, but that didn't stop him from referring to her as a 'babe'. Rush then proceeded to end his first hour with another Drudge headline talking about the earliest sub-zero temps we've experienced in 18 years. Clearly we are entering the New Ice Age and the liberals are wrong about global warming :smuggo:

The context can be any number of things. Maybe they are looking at a picture of a young Mandela? Maybe reading a new headline? Maybe the funeral hasn't started and everyone is socializing for a few hours first? The headline forces context on a picture that has none. But I can say with 100% certainty that this will be the top news story for the rest of the day.

Looking at the photo itself, I don't even know if Obama is taking a photo - it almost looks as if the three are looking at something else entirely. (Note how Helle Thorning-Schmidt isn't smiling, and Obama is giving at what can at best be called a grin)

There are a bunch of pictures floating around of Michelle looking unhappy and Obama smiling with Thorning-Schmidt. Absent any context, of course, but they look like stereotypical "wife is angry husband is talking to attractive woman" images - so I expect to hear a lot about it in the coming days.

Now I'm curious what was actually happening.

Same here, I still can't understand how some of the people in this thread can stand to listen to what Fox/Rush/Drudge/et al say every day, it'd drive me nuts. That's why I love things like this thread, the Republican Rebuilding thread, the Freep thread, and The Daily Show/The Colbert Report; they all hit the high points of what the right wing is talking about, without requiring me to torture myself watching Fox or listening to Rush.

The recent right wing howling over the Pope is a perfect example, I'd never have been able to stand Limbaugh long enough to have heard him call the Pope a Marxist.

It was a memorial service and not a funeral. There was singing and dancing in honor of Mandela's life, so it's not like this was supposed to be a somber occasion. What were the world leaders supposed to be doing, weeping and rending their garments?
