Apparently even though the series isnt doing so hot rating wise, the models are selling like gangbusters.

I'm baffled by how this series has made me hate everything at face value and then almost instantly won me over when I see it in action. Star build strike seemed dumb as gently caress when pics of it's 1/144 surfaced but after seeing it this episode its one of my favourite suits and I ACHE for it to be added to extreme vs in a couple of years.

Also, holy poo poo, Kaiser was Finnish too?! For the record, his name makes no sense to be Finnish (Or Swedish - well, maybe just little more. He'd be from Mariehamn, capital of a Swedish-speaking autonomous island that's a part of Finland). Go evil corporate team Finland  I'm betting the plavsky engineers aren't exactly saints either, though.

It's an incredibly stupid show on its face, but it's so charmingly earnest and takes its completely ridiculous concept so straight-faced while still having fun that you can't help but love it. It reminds me a lot of what makes G Gundam so charming; we're not in that same level of awesome yet, but it feels similar. Plus the fight scenes are basically pornography for mobile suit fans. They put more effort and imagination into making cool battles for this glorified toy commercial than they have into actual main line Gundam shows for ages.

Seriously, Build Fighters is avoiding some of the worst excesses of the genre but it is still very much your average shonen merchandise show. Kids have been watching that pretty much all their life, it's... It's actually the equivalent of Gundam fans watching yet another UC retread. Huh.

It won't actively repel them but the show doesn't have much to make it worth their time either It's a toy commercial for toys which already exist basically. A lot of the fun and appeal is seeing obscure stuff animated or recognizing the goofy injokes and fan love and none of that is designed to cater to people unfamiliar with Gundam, and without that stuff it loses a lot of its flavor.

I know that when I was six, freshness and originality were pretty far down on the list of qualities I sought out in my personal entertainment, whereas exciting action, wish-fulfillment and comfortable familiarity ranked pretty high. It just seems weird to me that GBF has completely failed to bring in a young audience of any size; but then, I have no idea what sort of competition it has.

It is literally the reason we got both Gundam AGE and BF, because they want that Danball money.

I remember reading that the biggest competition to Build Fighters is the evening news because of its timeslot, so it's a mix of it not being remarkable enough to grab kids and parents saying "shut the gently caress up shotaro its time for the news"

My thing as a tot was mostly Hanna-Barbera superhero stuff  and I really didn't care that they were all basically the same (terrible) show; simply could not get enough of that poo poo.GBF has lots of perfectly decent qualities apart from its trufan appeal, and while I wouldn't expect great ratings from a show that's basically playing me-too in an already crowded genre I'd still have expected something better than "nonexistent." fake edit: hahah holee poo poo that timeslot, might as well slit your loving wrists.

To be fair - TV Tokyo is a bit weird and regularly airs anime during evening timeslots where the other channels are airing the news or dramas instead. This isn't that unusual. edit: To be a bit more clear, TV Tokyo has anime programming at 6 and 6:30 nearly every weekday. Build Fighters seems to be like Transformers Animated or that He-man reboot in the west, where grown up nerds love them for all the nostalgia and references to the old school stuff, but the kids just look at the show and scratch their heads. That said, I think it's safe to say that Build Fighters is really entertaining and is probably the best Gundam show since Turn A. I enjoy this more than Unicorn, even. Not that I don't like Unicorn, I do enjoy it, but this is more fun and feels more fresh to me, while Unicorn is pretty much the standard same old Gundam show I've seen a million times, just with high production values.

The first box set has been announced. As you might expect, there are two versions. Limited Edition has a booklet, some video shorts, staff commentary, and in case you were actually thinking of getting this a clear 1/100 MG Build Strike. It'll come out in March for 31,500 yen. For the more sane people, the regular edition will come out Christmas for 2940 yen. If they were including the OST with the Limited Edition I might have actually bit the bullet and bought it, but thankfully they didn't.

Question. The last Gundam show I remember watching is Seed (I've skimmed 00 on my brother's PC) and I have no knowledge on Gunpla beyond that they are figurines based on the Gundam franchise. Would I get lost watching this show?

Would I get lost watching this show? You'd probably be fine. 00 only has Season 1 in the show and Gundam AGE is not appearing at all. The big units features are from Gundam SEED and Universal Century Gundam so you'll be able to recognize at least some of them and identify some of the injokes.
