I don't understand why LARP can't just use the same loving rules & dice everyone else does. Just carry your dice in your pocket, and if there's seriously no flat surfaces to roll on, have the ST for the scenes carry around a clipboard or the lid of a shoebox or something.

Or put dice in those plastic containers you can get from the .25 cent prize machines at the supermarket. They're clear, the lid is flattened, and you can shake it up and then set it down, and bam a good random roll.

INH5 posted:It seems to me that this could create issues with the probabilities changing each time you draw a card, just like it does in Blackjack and such. Do they shuffle the deck after each roll? You do shuffle in between rolls, but not when you draw for 10-again. It's not perfect but it works reasonably well. I've spoken to a few of the GMs about just letting us use dice-rolling apps instead. Much easier all round.

Here is Stovetop posted:Also you can't do this, it explicitly states you can't take items that belong to other people, you can have a cell phone appear in your pocket, but you can't have "THAT GUY'S" cellphone appear in your pocket. It's even the exact example they give in the rules text. That makes me sad. It's possible the GM let me get away with it because I got nine successes. That's way more balanced than what I thought the power was, though. What counts as "belonging" though? Could you do what I originally thought would be the best idea and get a tour of a military armory at some point so you have a wide variety of ordinance to draw on?

We did this for a while and it's actually really jarring. The nice thing about RPS is that it can be done really quickly with minimal interruption of scene. Dice are less convenient, have a tendency to roll around on the ground, people don't always have pockets for them, etc. The whole point of VLARP is to put more emphasis on character interaction. You'd be amazed how much dice can really reduce all of that (and I've tried both). Cards are a nice middle ground because it has a lot of the same problems as dice (props required, pockets needed, etc) without requiring a flat surface or going somewhere other than precisely where you're standing to resolve a check. It's more random and less fiddly than RPS. On the whole I'd prefer if an ST was just on hand to arbitrate every check via electronic gizmo (or hell, just have everybody run a dice roller on their cellphones) since that's all the benefits of both dice and cards.

Holy Crap I found the good game thread! That said, I'm quite happy. While I'm not familiar with the NWOD the OWOD is my game. I have been a PC in every game save for mummy and wraith. I have ST'd Hunter, Werewolf, and Vampire games and am working on a Post-Cataclysmic Mortal Game using the cWoD system for which I have mad a totally rad character sheet and am working on system balance. (When it is complete I will post I there for critique/fair use/evisceration). Here's the master copy of the character sheet! https://pic.twitter.com/aaLFY1djSf Despite being a good looking 25 year old with a girlfriend, I spend every Saturday night playing White Wolf Games with my nerdiest friends. Out of curiosity has anyone tried running storytelling games in the S/A forums? Could be badass or awful. Thoughts?

Played in a Demon game last night where within five minutes of the game's start a mysterious GM NPC casually and explicitly connected my character's Cover to his Demon identity in an unsecured cellphone conversation, so my PC spent the rest of his night Dumping His Phone and Going to Ground and Burning It All Down and being Casually Suspicious That SIM Cards Never Really Stop Knowing Where You Are, and honestly, that's a whole lot of fuckin' fun to play Also this is what's going on in the God-Machine's Heaven every time some jerkoff Goes Loud https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSckms_rfwY edit: Cool to know we straight up can't link to specific parts of Youtubes now, I guess. In that case, I would recommend taking a gander through The Game Room, which is the TG subforum and spot for all forum games (versus just TG, which is focused on discussion). Look for recruiting threads with this tag: They'll usually mention either the system [owod, nwod, cwod], or the gameline [nMage, Mage:taw, MTA, etc.] in the thread title itself. Around here the New World of Darkness tends to be what most folks run. PROTIP: you can also filter a forum by it's thread tag, allowing you to see only recruit threads. But be sure to check the date of the thread to make sure you don't apply to an old closed game or one that is already running. There's also the Recruitment Megathread where most people who make new games post a link to theirs (don't bother reading the whole thing, the latest games are on the latest page, just skip to the end, bookmark it, and check in every so often when you see new posts.)

RPS is dumb as hell, cheatable and warping of the game, but its cheap, 'traditional', and relatively fast since the conclusion is immediately read-able rather than being dependant on maths. Dice has some problems with scaling, fiddlyness of the dice, and I've seen someone have to be pulled away by on-site security because of rampant dumb cheating, part of which being a quick-rolling without letting anyone else read the dice. 1-10 card systems don't really work. I recommend the 54d3 rules because they more closely mirror the effects of RAW nWoD pools than other systems while also being a faster(!) system than a 3-5 tie string of RPS.

Running my first ever Mage the Awakening game tonight. I've never been this nervous about running a game before. I plan on taking the goon advice of just presenting a mystery or puzzle and letting the players decide how they magic their way out of it.

Has anyone used the GMC social maneuvering system in their game yet? We're thinking of using it in the mage game I'm in but I'd like some input on how it actually works in a game. I feel like my character with presence 4/intimidate 4/mind 4 is just going to run roughshod over everyone in a number of ways, but then again that is rather a feature of putting those dots in those places.

I've tried to use it a little bit, but honestly I think it's about my least favorite part of the new rules-- maybe the fault's in my execution, but it feels extremely artificial to drop into place and totally breaks the flow of a scene for me. The doors also, yes, mean that a socially-focused supernatural can essentially just run rampant over everyone without too much trouble at all. This may be working as intended, but it makes the system itself a little bit pointless. On another note the Demon kickstarter just ended and broke like $150,000, like 50,000+ ahead of Mummy. I'm really excited about how healthy NWoD is looking now.

I've had a lot of success with social maneuvering. I find that trying to keep the rules off the table and focus on what the characters are doing helps a lot. "I roll for leverage" is dull but trying to figure what it is the pcs are doing post hoc makes for some fun play. I try to frame doors as individual objections to a task rather than hp for social whatsits though.

Hey y'all, let's play the ____.mp3 game! It's a fun game for cool people. Rules: Link a youtube, soundcloud, or any other audio format in an attempt to summarize the tone, theme, message or game line, faction, heritage (clan, auspice, seeming, etc), or any other particular thing in the World of Darkness. So we're basically playing silverladder.mp3, osirian.mp3, vampire.mp3, and the like. This can be accurate and serious, or a humorous pisstake, whatever. my group love the Social maneurvering rules - two of them are long-term social characters, who are working on their own projects that simmer along as subplots for several stories at a time. For things like "I want this fellow member of he order to stop thinking I'm after her job" or "I want this mage to let me into her legacy", the mapping of impressions and opening doors session by session work very well. For things like "I need this bouncer to let me in", not so much. They're for long-term efforts in chronicle play.

Stick with the regular nWoD rules, reduce the number of doors, something else entirely?

Would this work as a changeling token? Kreigsmariners Canteen (Dots TBD) In July 1944 the U-493 sank an oil tanker, the USS Sophie Antonette, off the coast of Florida. Minutes later the destroyer USS Roland Jones sank the U-493 off the coast of Florida. The only survivors of the two sunken vessels were Karl Werk and the Bakelit canteen attached to his belt. He escaped from the doomed submarine, exhausted himself swimming to the surface, and soon found himself on a beach filled with oil, debris, and an open fire pit. Karl was soon put to work putting metal, human remains, and oil-drenched sand into the pit. Karl wasn't able to survive the week. He and his canteen were tossed into the flames. Somehow the canteen survived. People who drink any amount of salt-water from the canteen are granted a measure of protection from fire. This water has a horrible oil-like taste and smell. The protection comes at the cost of witnessing Karl's last few days starting with the destruction of the USS Sophie Antonette. Any number of people can take a drink from the canteen but they'll usually wish they hadn't. The saltwater by itself is enough to cause horrible nausia. The subsequent experience is so horrible that people who drank from water from it spend the rest of the day in a state of pain, misery, and exhaustion. Ability: The user is protected from fire for the rest of the scene, taking bashing damage instead of lethal damage. Burns and blisters become bumps and bruises. The canteen itself is impervious to fire. Action: Instant. Mask: http://www.ebay.com/itm/WW2-GERMAN-BAKELITE-German-WAFFEN-ZZ-DAK-soldiers-field-CANTEEN-BOTTLE-AFRIKA-/111235308896 Mein: When the canteen is activated the it starts to seep tears. When it's opened the canteen starts to scream. Catch: The user has to spend one willpower to drink the water and rolls -1 until they're able to get a full-nights rest. After the rest they'll still remember that they had a horrible experience after drinking the water but they won't recall any other details. --- A Changeling Brothel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IxrskrY9gs Edit 1: I formatted the youtube video as a url for some stupid reason.
