Anyone checkout Dub Police's past present future? It's a run through of some of their favorite tracks through the catalog, and they did release a couple new tracks along with it. Matty G & J:Kenzo made a track together that is a pretty cool blend of their styles. I don't understand though why they they did a 45 track release and with a few new songs. They could have just released another license to thrill.

There's a triple pack vinyl out that has some of the new tracks are on it. Shame the tracklist seems to be missing that early Distinction single on DP. Loved that at the time, listening to it now 7 years on it's a bit quaint. In a good way though.

Kinda makes me wish they'd do a Storming Productions set now though, if only so I can have everything in one place without needing to dig through a sea of 12s. At the very least Toasty needs more light shone on him, such a great producer he was and the handful of tunes he had on Storming were some of his best (though not the best).

Yeah. I noticed the vinyl pack, probably going to pick it up just for the sake of having SC Connection on vinyl. Tis a shame the DP NA tour isn't coming through the maryland area. Closest thing is NY.

So Beatport is laying off employees. Maybe Movement will have two Red Bull stages next year instead :haw:

If only Beatport could lay off some of the artists instead. Well maybe that's a bit too harsh even for me. Amazing to see the losses on it though I got to admit. On the plus side for SFX at least the now ex-employees can't make off with the half the stock since it's not real (as I suggested to a couple of former Fopp employees when they weren't paid when that company went under first time round).

Interesting to read some of the comments too, people calling them sellouts or whatever which gets a bit of a laugh from me. Now you guys know I don't normally do the digital download thing, though when I do I've always used Juno or Bleep or whatever. I've always written off Beatport as like the HMV of the download world. Seriously uncool, even before the buyout.

Tell you what's not uncool though, the new Komon single on Apple Pips. Skippy 'n' wobbly 2-step vibes on the a-side flipped by a groovy, deep and hot 4x4 number that still keeps that swing.

New Burial EP "Rival Dealer" apparently released early today. You can stream it at Hyperdub!

It's.. different sounding. I enjoyed Rival Dealer, though. I wonder why they decided to release it early.

I'm a little underwhelmed. Need to listen to it a couple of more times. Not his greatest work, I'd say.

Burial's new release is mixed to me. It seems like a lot faster paced than his other releases and a lot warmer. I'm sure it'll grow on everyone like most of his other releases. Only a couple of his songs have really sprung out and been on replay for me the first time hearing it. A couple more listens through will probably do the trick.

I just listened to it like 4 times in a row. It's really strange, bits are growing on me. Sexuality and identity are main themes, which is definitely a new one for Burial.

Yeah this one's growing on me too. I'm really starting to dig it. Warmer is what I was thinking too. I think he's fallen in love (and then he got dumped).

The sample near the very end, with the transgender person talking about the room, is so cool.

I think it's definitely a grower. The first time through I didn't really catch on, but after the 3rd listen I can definitely hear how this EP is more like a story. I enjoy the themes of identity and sexuality, especially with the addition of the sample of Lana Wachowski's speech at the end. I hope Burial keeps trying out different stuff!

The first part of River Dealer reminds me of the Big Beat era but a bit rougher and dirtier. Think Prodigy, Leftfield, Chemical Bros.

It's called "hardcore" and there are some really good posts about the history of it linked from the OP of this thread!

Give them a read, if you liked Rival Dealer (and early Prodigy) you might really be in to it!

Ehh, I'm on the fence about it. There were some copies at Other Music in NYC, so I could have stopped over there and grabbed a copy. Zomby is one of my favorite artists (he even blocked me on twitter!) but this stuff is generally a lot more ambient. Pretty, but not quite my thing. Not driven enough in the music.

Yeah it definitely has a more ambient feel to it but I'm really digging two halves by prayer. It's kind of annoying though that Zomby is only releasing everything on vinyl at this moment but it just helps add to the mystery of the cult music label.

You know I've been wondering that too. I still disagree with them going outside the station for the mixes. Though on saying that I'd probably quickly change my mind if it was someone I really enjoyed. But if you can't be hypocritical in life then what can you be?

I didn't write this. But I found this to be a very good post. It can be found here: http://www.factmag.com/2013/12/11/b...e-since-untrue/

Credits to poster 'Jude'.

quote:

"Here it is, laid out:

1) Rival Dealer:
- at 2:15, the music/beat suddenly fades out, and a voice comes in and says, "This is who I am." Then the music re-enters
- at 4:15, a voice comes in and says, "It's about sexuality, it's about finding the person who you are. [Now between you and me(?)] this is who I am about."
- at 5:00 a voice says, "Sometimes you try to find yourself. But you run away. That's what happened to me."
- Again, the voice comes in at 6:00 and says, "This is who I am."
- Again, at 9:15: "This is who I am."
- The last voice heard, ending this track, says over and over: "Come down to us. Come down to us." (Which is the name of the last track, clearly a key track here.)

2) Hiders:
- First voice says: "There's a kid somewhere..." (Implying some kids are lost, as Lana herself - see below - talks about being lost. Burial's album seems to have this theme of reaching out.)
- The voice sings, "Now the sunlight's come." Then: "Offers protection. Offers protection."
- Then the voice sings, "You don't have to be alone. You don't have to be alone."
- This too, like the first song, ends with the voice saying at 3:47: "Come down to us." Leading to the last track:

3) Come Down to Us:
- the song begins with a voice saying, "Excuse me, I'm lost." Then a voice says, "Who are you? Why don't you come to me?"
- some of the lyrics, from what I can make out: "Come on in. Come down to us."
- a voice speaks, "The moment when you see who you are."
- at 10:48 a voice says, "You are not alone." Then immediately comes the same sample that's in "Loner" on Kindred: "There's something out there."
- at 11:37 the voice repeats: "You are not alone."
- long silence, then:
- the song - and the EP - ends with a long quote from Lana Wachowski's HRC Visibility Award Acceptance Speech. Wachowski is a transgender, she made The Matrix and V for Vendetta along with her brother. The quote that ends the EP: "Without examples, without models, I began to believe voices in my head - that I was a freak, that I am broken, that there is something wrong with me, that I will never be lovable... Years later I find the courage to admit that I am transgender and this doesn’t mean that I am unlovable... So that this world that we imagine in this room might be used to gain access to other rooms, to other worlds previously unimaginable."

Then we hear the voices that began this track, including: "Who are you? Why don't you come to me?"

End of EP.

I don't know that Burial is "coming out," as the Fact Mag writer wrote. I do think however that Burial's come out strongly in support of gay and transgender rights and an end to bigotry - and any and all who feel "lost," "truant," who are "sleeping rough," "homeless." Lana Wachowski's speech, the part about "this world that we imagine... might be used to gain access to other rooms, to other worlds previously unimaginable," is what this EP is about. "Come on in, out of the cold."

Brilliant EP, I really think this is a grower, and should garner a lot of praise."
Incredible.

Yeah I got to admit I wasn't expecting a loving dissertation on his sexuality when the new EP was released. I don't remember anything like this was his last release though, has there been some kind of massive Burial re-discovery or something in the past year that I didn't know about? Like you said I've fairly well liked his releases since Untrue, but nothing has been mind blowing in the way that was, or when I first picked up South London Boroughs.

Must concur with the gents above. Nice thing about his earlier poo poo was that you obviously felt that the dude had a lot going on artisticaly, but it wasn't in your face- samples lent mystique to his productions, rather than some sort of explicit SOI. Nice to hear him messing round with the breaks though. reckon rival dealer will go off on the dancefloor, which is nice at least.

Notable for the youtube comment from none other than Spooky:

"why would u boost the bass? why not get some better headphones or speakers instead of distorting a perfectly fine track by having the "bass boosted"? y'all let your lickle man PC speakers or lickle man headphones gas you up into hearing otherwise."
