No love for dual wielding? DPS wide, it's the best option, although I do agree a 2-Handed weapon is the best option for defensive fighting. Get a good hammer and you can really knock them silly.

That actually sounds reasonable compared to the all-or-nothing it was a week ago. If you don't have a gun or a shield one of your best options is a slow two-handed weapon. Timing a big swing can produce enough knockback that you can come out of many encounters wholly unscathed.

This is what I've been doing the whole time, it's made the game easy as poo poo.

I REALLY wish that spears worked like they did in Terraria though, they're a bit too difficult right now, and when you stack on the odd disadvantage you have by being on higher ground, it gets tough.

Yea I feel the same way. Just started playing two days ago and I've switched to using axes/hammers because of the arc and increased damage. Got a dash tech so that helps dodge. I really enjoy everything about the game but am definitely more excited for it being a bit more fleshed out. Currently making a set of that leather snow armor so I don't freeze to death on the neighboring snow planet of the one I crashed on! Is it worth it to keep exploring alpha sector after I've hit tier two armor and gear (steel)? I need to gather more fuel but the lure of better loot is very enticing...

How the hell are people finding decent weapons? I'm in T4 right now and I have fully upgraded racial armor but my weapons don't do poo poo damage to anything. I'm at the point where I'm trying to summon and beat the Jelly boss but I can't even damage him. The only guns I've been able to find were from a random planet that had an Avian airship gun merchant and they don't seem to do much damage at all. I've been digging around like crazy looking for bosses and dungeons but haven't found any. Are there certain planet types they are more likely to spawn in or something? Maybe I've just been unlucky.

Are crafted weapons bad at low tiers? Do that if your loot is so terrible. For guns, just google below and change the threat level.

Once you make it to sector x, google "threat level 10 pirate starbound".

(If you can make it to the pirate ship...) That will get you through melee weapons until you can craft the 1-h sword/2-h axe from impervium. Also, buy a good gun. Low energy for max damage are the keys. I got a great Uzi I still use this way.

For the jelly-bro, once you get ANY gun, build walls around you with a 2-4 block opening in the middle for shooting through. Place the trap on top, jump and activate. Then just point up and empty your clip... A lot.

My planet bases seem pretty random. I've seen almost all of them on every planet sans moons.

Range is so massively important, I question their choice to put a DPS stat into the game. DPS is kinda meaningless in a game like this, since it's not as if the enemy is going to stand still and let you attack them at full speed. That "DPS" number is almost purely theoretical and doesn't really apply in any real situation. What would be more useful would be a preview of the arc of the swing and the path and damage of any projectiles.

That's awesome because some of the spears in Starbound are badass with the 'casted' fireballs that come out the end. They're completely pointless when faced with the possibility of using a huge axe or sword that clips around some cover elements.

Made two gun mods. They're not perfect, but they're decently fun. There is an X-Com (the original; UFO Defense) laser rifle, as well as Deckard's Blaster from Blade Runner. Perfect if you need to brain some aliens or Retire some Skinjobs.

I didn't really know what to do about damage, so feel free to let me know what values are decent. The graphics aren't perfect and need to be tidied up a bit, but I'm really proud of the audio; it's the original sound for both of them.

Same. I'm okay with that design and think it's great they're adding upgradeable ships. But I'd like a supported in-game way of designing my own spaceship more than anything.

I like prebuilt ship rooms because I am horribly uncreative and everything I built myself with the sandbox ship mod turned out to just be a big box that's too big or too small for what I wanted to do with it. Also I don't have to worry about most of my ship being made of dirt because I ran out of cool building materials.

What if they're actually exceeding our expectations and that's really modular? A lot of the rooms and accoutrements are the same size and format, so it could theoretically be possible, like in the screenshot we saw where the guy is moving a prebuilt ship part, that those are just expanded built options rather than premade formats?

Another big science place that has the matter-block machine thinger - x37207065 y76807021 in Sector X.

Even if you don't need the matter blocks by that point, if you want materials to deck out your ship or whatever you can get THOUSANDS of wall blocks + pressurized steel and other such building materials.

EDIT: forgot to add its on a small moon X Menkalinan 040 II, the bottom one. Go left or right it doesnt matter, small rear end planet.

I think having specific sizes of ship makes the future ship combat thing they hinted at much easier to plan around. You can probably do more with a prefab set of ships than you could ever hope to balance around people building space castles with engines on the bottom.

I'm probably the odd one out, but I'm actually pretty okay with prebuilt ships. I like just doing the interior decorating, and it's nice to have a mobile base of operations that doesn't look like it's made out of blocks.

To all you modders,

I started working on a custom race, and based it on humans as a template. I got it showing up in the character creation screen, and I can successfully make a character of my new race (which at the moment is mostly just human except for a few variations), but I can't get the skin color to work properly. Whenever I try to modify the colors of the skin tones it defaults to the generic skin tone. I even tried copying over color values from hylotl and avian to see if that would give me interesting colors, but it still only shows one skin tone, the default. I'm editing the "bodyColor" field in the .species file for my race. Is there something else I need to change, or am I doing something wrong?

I am roughly a million times more okay with prebuilt ships as a possibility now that we're getting a button that lets us instantly warp to our home planet. I'll gladly take a prefab design for my ship since I can just build a homebase any way I want.

There's a proper grapple you make a bit later on but it's useless. By the time you can make it you will have found at least one tech and pretty much all of them remove any need for vertical climbing tools.
