Ryand-Smith posted:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesapeake_Bay_Bridge%E2%80%93Tunnel Looks normal for a tunnel. The lights are designed to give a consistent pattern to avoid light-dark-light-dark patterns, and with enough intensity that the transition from outside to inside to outside doesn't screw with your vision too much. Long strings of lower-intensity lights like they're using may also be better for redundancy's sake, since getting a lane of the tunnel shut down for maintenance would be annoying. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Ches...,222.55,,0,-2.1

If you see blood in your urine, see a doctor or graphic designer immediately. CONTENT: At a signaled left turn (green arrow, permissive left on green, no red arrow,) shouldn't the crosswalk you're turning through have a don't walk signal, at least until the green arrow extinguishes? I almost got rear ended just now because I had to stop halfway through the turn for pedestrians who had a walk signal.

Yeah it can be really annoying for intersections that are busy for both cars and pedestrians http://www.post-gazette.com/local/city/2013/11/16/Advocates-seek-changes-at-East-Liberty-intersection.html I drive through this left turn just about every day. I even know when my arrow is about to come up because the pedestrians start crossing a split second before. I just pull up as close to the crosswalk as I can so the cars behind me can get through too (the arrow only lasts about ten seconds, way too short for the amount of traffic it gets).

To be fair, the pedestrians (one with a walker) that I didn't run down had ignored a dedicated pedestrian crossing ~50yds up the road from the intersection that the county put in for a bus stop, and then jaywalked against a don't walk signal to the no mans land in the middle of the road, and then tried to cross the last half with a walk signal...

50yds up and 50yds back is quite a way to walk each way with a walker, at least in an urban environment.

Pedestrians here are really bad: The crosswalk is the pink line that's, like, right there. If you pan around, you'll notice the gap in the bushes where the grass has been completely worn away too. https://www.google.com/maps/preview...M_1Ow!2e0&fid=5

Hahah you wanna see dumb pedestrians? Here in Evansville we have a casino on a boat in the river. The company (Tropicana now but Aztar before) has a hotel across Riverside Drive, a four lane boulevard. So they built a bridge that goes between the hotel and the riverboat, to make it easier on people to get to it. As far as I know you can just walk from the parking garage to the bridge without having to rent a room. Everytime I'm down there I see at least 1, usually 4 or more, people walking right in the middle of the road, DIRECTLY UNDERNEATH the pedestrian bridge.

Pedestrian bridges are notoriously hard to get people to utilize. The AASHTO Pedestrian Guide has a graph of empirical data of utilization rate vs. time savings - basically unless you get *significant* time savings, people won't use them. And once you factor in how far out of your way you have to go, bridges can become infeasible pretty quickly. Weirdly, tunnels get used at higher rates for the same time savings.

I crossed jersey barriers in las vegas rather than use the pedestrian bridges, because I didn't want to take the time to climb the stairs. I am definitely more likely to use a tunnel beneath a road, I guess the psychology of going down first makes it an 'easier than waiting or jaywalking' choice than going up first to a bridge.

The tunnel preference is weird to me because I usually associate ped tunnels with getting mugged. Can also happen on a bridge too of course but they have exposure.

I think Qwijibo's comment about not wanting to take the stairs is actually on the mark - despite both options having stairs to take. If you are faced with a set of stairs going up, you're more likely to say "gently caress it, I'll wait". If you start with the easy down stairs, you're already locked in and can't change your mind.

Also, the stairs going down into a tunnel would be much shorter than the stairs going up to a bridge. Pedestrians don't need a whole lot of clearance overhead, so the tunnel can be quite short, while traffic needs tons of room especially on busy streets that may see oversize loads etc.

Seems like most places with pedestrian bridges also use big roadside fences to force people to use them.

They seemed to work allright in Oslo, Norway, a city not particularly known for its warm winters: http://goo.gl/maps/TwW8d Though that road is basically uncrossable on foot, and they had space for ramps onto the bridges so you don't really have to climb stairs if you're going straight across.

In Kiev almost every intersection has a tunnel, it's pretty cool. The tunnels are also full of shops and vendors so they aren't so terrifying to go through. It all works out pretty nicely because like said, peds need way less clearance than a road so way fewer steps. Also no fucks given for wheelchair ramps. If you can't go down a bunch of ice covered stairs that seem to slightly slant then you're out of luck. http://goo.gl/maps/z9zAC

Boy, this new job is fantastic. I can't wait for my first raise - I've been exceeding all the expectations. For those of you who briefly tried out the VISSIM demo and decided it was way too hard, give version 6 a shot. It's still balls hard, but at least it's a bit more intuitive. Even has WASD controls in 3D mode.
