I wonder if Rider 1 will have a prominent enough role in the new Wars movie for them to bring Hiroshi Fujioka back to voice him. I'm still disappointed he didn't get to play the role out of suit in Let's Go Kamen Riders given he showed that he's a perennial boss a couple years prior in the Rescue Force film. Sad to hear the Kyoryuger movie's not that good. Haven't been keeping up with SHT lately but was pretty hyped by the idea of it being a musical. Guess Kamen Rider Decade Live & Show will remain king of the Super Hero Time musicals for now. Also, two hours of behind the scenes Dairanger filming courtesy of a Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers director who took it for research.

The Kyoryuger movie's not actually that bad when compared to like, an episode. Which is probably wise considering the length of the thing. It is a drat shame it's not a proper musical, but the action's still super great unless you hate CG robots. The pacing is still pretty brisk though, it also mostly avoids having a ridiculously dumb or out-of-tone plot which I feel is usually the problem with the bad toku movies. e: also the latest episode continues to be the greatest Raizor fucked around with this message at 12:49 on Dec 16, 2013 |

If I'm not mistaken, the Christmas Monster was Brooke from One Piece. I love hearing One Piece characters in Super Sentai The best part is that they managed to work his trademark "YO HO HO" laugh into the monster by being Santa themed. Blade starts horribly, but holy poo poo does it get awesome later on. Its finale is still one of my favourites, if not my all-time favourite even now (Double, Ryuki, if you just hadn't pushed the reset button...), so it'd be great to see good subs and a video with actual quality (holy poo poo were some TVN episodes hard to watch because of how bad the quality of the video was). Also I didn't find that one episode NDA subbed of Gaim that bland (but I'm good at ignoring that apparently), and seeing its being corrected by someone else anyways (never saw anything from GUIS, so I can't say anything about their quality, but apparently they're good?), I see no good reason to not look forward to this. I finished Blade recently and was pleasantly surprised at how overall good it was. I was a little worried about it because it came out just after Faiz, which I absolutely HATED. Just couldn't get into it. I wonder now how much of that was just the translation or if it truly is just bad?

Faiz is a pretty loving bleak show, which is sort of this problematic transition the series has in between the TV drama people wanted out of shows like Kuuga and Agito but also the highly marketable aspects of shows like Ryuki that Faiz and Blade try to strike a middle-ground between. It's also Takumi Inoue's magnum opus as far as him being a lovely writer goes, where literally every problem he has as a writer grows to a tremendous climax of confusing, depressing and absurd character drama.

It's funny because I went into Jetman not knowing it was him, and that, at one point, he actually wrote good Toku. At one point someone falls into a river and gets amnesia and I was like 'Heh, so that's where Inoue got that from...' And then I looked at the credits and I was like WHAAAAAAAA

Unfortunately, Toshiki Inoue's a much better spread name than Shoji Yonemura in the wider English speaking fandom, despite Yonemura pretty much universally being toxic. You can't really look back and find a Jetman or Agito in his CV.

Kabuto and Faiz are really similar in that both shows have some very good things going for them, but are unfortunately dragged down by very terrible things and a person's enjoyment of either depends solely on whether they can stomach enough of the terrible stuff to enjoy the good stuff.

Oh. I've been under the (apparently false) impression that Kabuto starts getting better as it goes on, and was one of the better Heisei series. Not regretting growing tired of it so much anymore. Still enjoyed it a lot, though, if only because of how absurd some of the dialogue and scenes became.

I'm not entirely sure how anyone could think that Kabuto gets better with time. If anything, it's all the opposite, apart from a small spike in quality once Gatack is introduced, the series gets progressively worse, and by the end it's nothing but a collosal trainwreck, leadered by an absolutely invincible, perfect and totally unlikable Tendou. I still think that it had some really good concepts, but the execution was absolutely flawed. If only it had been Kamen Rider Gatack instead, at least I could like the protagonist...

If you get onboard the wacky train early on, by the time they're serving green ramen in a watermelon bowl and having makeup fights it's the most fantastic loving trainwreck I've seen put to celluloid. Like the Ramen Episode is seriously a masterpiece of just how bad Rider can get. Rei_ fucked around with this message at 05:05 on Dec 18, 2013 |

I've heard good things about Maskman, so I'm giving it a try. The first two episodes felt kind of bland, though. How does it get later on? While I really liked Jetman, I'm not much on pre-Zyu sentai because I like the sixth ranger dynamic. I know Maskman has that one-off-kinda-6th green ranger, so that's what got me thinking about watching it, but I know he's one and done.
