YF19pilot posted:Ah, yes, Planet Bowling Ball. I've had to play on those a few times, too. Personally, I think it's a player mindset of not wanting to put too much terrain because then their Big Toys can't fit on the table. When I was in college playing 40k, I was bitched at a few times for having a terrain-dense table because it meant that tanks and people actually had to move through slow-going/difficult terrain. In FoW, it seems like experienced players just take it in stride (unless it's bocage). Also, more people willing to assault buildings with tanks in FoW than in 40k. FoW sometimes has the opposite problem, there are quite a few guys I've seen who put in terrain so dense that you couldn't draw a LOS more than 8 inches or even put models on/in it because there is no room. Also rivers/streams/whatever, sometimes more than one. Sure it looks nice and more "realistic" but its unplayable.

I'm still trying to figure out the "terrain scale" of FoW, if that makes sense, and seeing as 600'x400' is actually not a lot of real estate to represent if you think about it. The entire board could be a corn field or a wooded lot and it'd still be "realistic". For my games though, I try to keep los between 12" and 18" with maybe a fire lane or two that players can exploit to keep each other honest. I'm still fighting people who want wide open terrain in FoW so they can park a Ferdinand or an 8.8 somewhere and just kill things all day.

When I'm playing friendly games, I like to go with a realistic setup. That can mean very dense, to not dense at all. I mean you gotta imagine that some attacks are going to be over fairly open areas. I think it balances out if you don't know what you're going to play on before you get to the game. In a tournament setting I'd probably opt for a more balanced approach.

Every "fix" to bring it into line with shooting actually just ends up being exploitable with new army lists and then BAM, mulching happens. That's funny, from comments in the 40K thread shooting is way stronger now, with some folks saying that assault and vehicles are more balanced now after being made less deadly than in previous versions.

That's happening because they've stopped putting down lots of terrain and it usually ends up being one piece in each table quarter thus meaning things can't hide until they're in charge range and have to actually take a turn of fire. Were they to be playing with the old 2nd ed rule of thumb("more terrain = better game") then it'd be a whole different story.

So anyone have experience fielding or playing against the Armii Krajowej? I'm thinking of building one once I get things sorted. Maybe to go alongside a Romanian list for Red Bear if I don't get suckered into Russian tank hordes.

With the points reduction for armor in the Red Bear update, it seems to give a bit more flexibility (and also now that you can take a Tank Platoon and the armored assault platoon instead of either or). I'm just curious what the thought is on how many SMG teams to take.

Man, working with nerds is great. I've already found two people who are definitely wargamers, and two who play obscure boardgames and are will to play wargames. One of them even told me he wants to play large-scale poo poo like Napoleonics. E: Although I don't play large scale poo poo like Napoleonics, so maybe I should point him towards buying his own armies to use on my table.

Here's a little something I've been cooking up. Kind of a basic scenario which I want to tweak a bit, want to see what you guys think. Would also like ideas on how this can be adapted to games other than FoW. So, Scenario posted:French car maker Citroen was originally set to unveil their now famous 2CV before WWII broke out. Instead, their president, Pierre-Jules Boulanger, along with the current owners, Michelin, did everything they could to hide the 2CV prototype, called the TPV, as well as sabotage the German occupation. Oh, and Boulanger landed himself on the Gestapo's "Enemies of the Reich" list for assisting the French Resistance. This scenario is a 'what if', with the idea being the SS coming to claim Boulanger's head in the closing days of the Liberation of Paris. I suggest this should be a city map set in an industrialized area of Paris. I'm doing research into the forces still. The Allies are easy, as it's pretty much just the US 4th ID which is in Overlord, the French 2eme Armored Division and Spanish 9eme Infantry, both of which are in the French 2nd Armored pdf online. German forces, I haven't dug up much yet, except they weren't the best Germany had to offer, and were defending the city with captured EW French tanks. So, a Grenadierkompanie with Beutepanzers would fit in, I think. I'm also thinking of making Boulanger a special objective, ala Audie Murphy in Devil's Charge. I haven't test played this myself, but if anyone gives a read or tries it out, let me know how it goes. It's just an interesting twist to the story of a very historical automobile that I felt would be fun to play out.

TBH I think it's the kind of scenario that'd work better for Force on Force or Bolt Action or similar.

My tip is two 6mm "starter sets" from Adler or Baccus, and a copy of Lasalle. It will still be cheap as hobby goes, he's able to actually paint if even though he has anything else going on in his life (unlike large scale 28mm armies), and it's a fun game that isn't wayyyy too complicated for a beginner. Seriously, for 30 bucks you get a playable 6mm nappy army. lilljonas fucked around with this message at 12:22 on Dec 8, 2013 |

Just watched Gettsburg with my lad and now want to do ACW in 6mm. I started a 28mm ACW force using plastics and Black Powder but the table always looks to crowded for my liking. I also picked up Sam Mustafas Longstreet which looks fun. Thinking I will base Baccus minis 2 strips per 20mm square base. Will work for BP and Longstreet that way and should be able to get a good sized force for cheap. I've not painted 6mm for ages and looking forward to taking a break from painting Warmachine.

My son and I have been binging on Band of Brothers together and I thimk I might want to try out FoW. Are there any armies that stay similar through the different periods? I mean, I really like the Italians (motociclisti), but I probably won't buy them because it seems like I would have to find an opponent with a specific force from Africa to play them against. My son wants Easy company, of course.

Generally, infantry stays similar throughout the periods, though things like AT guns and tanks change. So German infantry, for example, will keep you through all the time periods. American gear doesn't change all that much between Mid War and Late War. As long as you stay in the same periods, you can pretty much play anything against anything. Don't be afraid to pick up some Italians, though do be forewarned, the Italians aren't very present in Late War at all.

The real question here is, how likely is your son to care if your Germans are using MG42s when they should be using MG34s? If the answer to that question is any kind of concern then you might have better uses for your time than worrying about FoW. But also what Panzeh said, Italian lists kind of fizzle out in Mid War.

my son wouldn't care or even know the difference. But I would like tpo get some games in with the locals if I could..which is why i am thinking of FoW. Seriously, do not never take the Semoventes in MW. The hull-MG is actually a twin-MG, so you will always be firing at least 3 MG shots when you shoot at infantry. Otherwise, if you want an idea about what LW Italians will look like, check the .pdfs online. There's basically two factions, the Pro-Facist and Pro-Allied. No word if we'll get M15/42s, but they would be nice to have.

If they're forward leaning enough, they'll go plastic on the WWI in anticipation of the full book. And possibly update Blitzkrieg - since late Great War French, Germans, British, and Belgian uniforms were all close enough at 15mm to be used in early WW2. And with plastic, if they digitally model them, they can easily swap early Great War hats for late helmets. Holy crap, I can't wait for a resin A7V.

I'm fully prepared to see historical accuracy thrown under the treads of HUGE CINEMATIC ACTION BATTLES! but is there a more history-grounded rules to use the forthcoming Battlefront toys in? Through the Mud and Blood looks more single-base oriented, so something like a WWI hack for Blitzkrieg Commander maybe?
