Or like... take 100 bucks worth of it back to the store, and tell the kids Santa made a late delivery or "whoops look what Santa accidentally left on the roof!" when they get a couple more gifts next week. Jesus.

Universities will reissue degrees and update their records if you send them a marriage license or court order. But this person feels that their family member is that big of a donor that the student records office would recognize the name and go "oh hey isn't this Uncle Abusey McPennybags' nephew?" and tip them off on the name change.

That still shouldn't matter. I don't think the school can give out records without your permission. Everytime I wanted a transcript, the school made me fill out a request in writing and sign it. So it's not like the employer could even ASK the university if the degree exists. Any employers I've had that want to verify my degree ask me to provide a transcript. If it gets that far, she'll have an opportunity to explain herself and work out what means of proof that the employer would be willing to accept while protecting her identity. That said, if they want proof then they ask you to bring your academic record to the interview or put it in the application. Yeah, they could easily snip out the gym membership and "bank fees", but freeing up $50 won't correct what's fundamentally an income problem. I suppose there's the car, if being carless is feasible wherever they live.

Haha christ. Most likely he's going to eat poo poo for the 7 years that he can't discharge the student loans through bankruptcy, which he deserves for being a total moron. Then the banks will lose their money for lending to a total moron. Life goes on. I think there are provisions for debt relief if you encounter undue hardships, but they audit you to check for good faith behavior and "using student loans to go on vacations and buy stupid poo poo" does not fall under this hahahahaha. Doctors and lawyers will acrue more than that regularly. There are plenty of schools in the US that cost around 50k/year, no idea how much one can get in loans but the sky's the limit as far as school costs go.

Harry posted:Isn't it really hard to rack up that many student loans other than being a complete moron? Not really. Even going to a decent state school (in the US) is going to run you $15-25k a year (tuition, room and board, books, etc). Many degrees are longer than 4 years now. Have your parents make enough money so you don't get grants and get small scholarships and there you go. Michigan is $27k Michigan state $22k Western michigan $23k Colorado $28k Colorado state $21k Ohio state $21k Florida $20k Even if you get a $5k scholarship, if your parents can't/won't help you out it will be $15k a year so you are looking at $60k in loans unless you can work and make a ton of money but that is doubtful while going to school full time. You might be able to get 10k during the summer working super hard. Which could put you at $20k in loans. Most people would use that money for Florida spring break, an x-box, drinking, drugs, whatever else. If you put half of what you earn into school you still are left at $40k. The schools make claims you can save a bunch by living at home but then you might as well save more and go to community college for 2 years.

Sort of, it's 12th grade and the 1st year of university if you're doing a general program, or equivalent to a college program if you do a 3 year technical diploma - she got the later. Her parents were in that income bracket where they made enough that the government figured they should assist her financially, while not being able to afford to send their kid to essentially free school the next town over (They weren't great with money but their main problem was that they had a family income of something like 35K) Three years of living expenses aadding up to 20k isn't that bad. It's what I got from my parents (Combined family income was about 4x that of the ex's parents so they just gave me money ) for a four year program. Guess she could have worked during the school year, but that wasn't very common in that town (It's about a 1:1 student to actual inhabitant ratio so service jobs filled up quick) Edit: Although in the end the diploma she got was pretty worthless so yeah.

That'll still knock the amount due to less than 1/3rd of what it was before. And back taxes are dischargeable through bankruptcy.

Before I left sub-prime finance, we seemed to have a run up of absolute losers. I'm talking bad even for a company where a significant portion of our customers were financing through us because their last vehicle had been repossessed. Like, the week before. A couple that really stick out: A Seminole tribe member who received $11,000 per month for life free and clear who could not open a bank account (so that we could see the funds being deposited). Every vehicle he had ever financed had been repossessed. Every credit line he had ever opened had defaulted. And apparently he was financing a vehicle to build up the cosigner's credit. He cashed all of his checks at one of those low-rent payday loan and check cashing places. $11,000 in cash landed in this guy's lap every month like clockwork and somehow that simply wasn't enough. Then there was the guy who had four bankruptcies in ten years. One day, an underwriter looked up and said, "Holy poo poo. This guy has had four bankruptcies in ten years." Then we all laughed, and then we all walked over to look at the credit report because, holy poo poo how does that happen? Then we all kind of hung our heads and realized this fucker was probably going to get through.

The difference being we: a) were paying them solo b) went to a fancy expensive school and c) went to school beyond undergrad. My husband had a cosigner on his private loans, and had we not paid them off they would have gone after his parents. How do you just pee on a huge pile of money? Can you consolidate loans in Canada? That made our debt manageable and payable--would that be an option for this kid?
