I couldn't make it more than 6 or 7 episodes in to Tekkaman Blade. I just find it a really bizarelly bi-polar show. Like, on the one hand it wants you to take a large chunk of it's cast and story seriously, showing a ravaged Earth being scavenged by aliens, a main character who we're clearly meant to watch suffer etc. On the other hand, the guy's name is Dangerous Boy, his girl-friend gets the most convenient case of amnesia ever from a tiny love tap and the characters surrounding him all act like they're being churned out of a neighbouring saturday morning cartoon. They even had the douchebag army general as a villain in one of the arcs.

I'm sure it gets great later on. I just can't bring myself to make it that far in, so far at least.

Tekkaman Blade has a serious case of the 90s. Unfortunately it gets worse before it gets better, as the animation quality drops somewhere in the middle. But when the animation improves, it's like day and night. I agree with Kanos, the last several episodes were worth it.

The penultimate battle is in my opinion one of the most beautiful examples of that distinctive early-mid 90s animation style.

It's definitely one of those shows that has a lot of low points in terms of writing quality and animation quality and it sometimes drags rear end in the middle, but taken as a whole product it's fantastic. It's like Macross 7 in that regard, actually.

Yeah I can't bring myself into MuvLuv anything so that one is definitely out. Tekkaman Blade is on my list for the next big series I watch so there is that.

Does Getter Robo Armageddon count? I can't really think of another super robot series where the aliens eat people. Usually it's just wanton destruction of humanity and that's it.

Saw that one too. I'm well aware that's a slim genre. I grew up on Aliens and Starship Troopers so I was hoping for something like that in anime form with robots.

Gunparade March might be similar to that. It has an unknown alien invasion with military forces trying to combat them in giant robots. There's a bit of high school life thrown in but for the most part it's focused on the alien threat.

Godannar has alien invasions of unknown origins too. More super roboty then GunParade which is more miltary drama. You just have to be able to look past the large amounts of T & A.

Even the lowest points of Tekkaman Blade can't diminish the ridiculously good and haunting original musical score it is sporting---hell even that one piece from Fafner, Night Hell Kaimon I think was the name, is totally worth it for that first scene it gets a proper play/build-up on earlier in the series. Granted, the show never really managed to recapture that bit as it went, but eh---was no Ordian either.

Steel Fairy Rouran might work, there was an odd mix of supernatural and sci-fi trappings there...don't think all of it was ever subbed though.

It was a videogame adaptation, I believe. Those don't particularly turn out well. The source material (a PSX game) is apparently considered a cult classic though.

That being said, I'm pretty sure people are recalling Gunparade March because of Muv Luv comparisons.

Godannar is a really great old school super robot homage. It bleeds old fashioned 70s robot from its very pores. That said, the fanservice is so excessive that it borders on self-parody and it doesn't let up, so it's something you either need to learn to laugh at and ignore in the name of appreciating the good things the show does or it's something that will stop you from watching it forever.

I believe Godannar is the only super robot show in history that literally had to sell licensed pornography of the characters from the official artist in order to help fund a second season.

I fell into that category for a bit. I watched the first episode of Godannar however many years ago and just couldn't handle the fanservice, but I've shifted in how I intake anime, so I don't know if I'd feel the same anymore. I'll put it this way: Having gotten into something like Kill la Kill, do you think Godannar would fall into my tolerance range for flailing anime boobs?

They both handle it in pretty different ways. Like, Godannar's characters don't even acknowledge that the fanservice exists for the most part.

If you can shrug at Kill la Kill, you can definitely last through Godannar(and probably laugh out loud when they hang lampshades on their own ridiculous fanservice, which they do a couple times).

Kill La Kill has like 2 or 3 times more fanservice than Godannar, and the former isn't even halfway done.

You'll be fine. Like Srice said the show plays the fan service straight faced and no one even bats an eye. Think of it the same way no comic characters question why guys are chiseled sculptures of rippling muscles and girls are well endowed all around.

Well, on a whim I started watching Shin Mazinger Z, and this show owns bones so far. Although the first episode started in media res and had me really loving confused, like it was a sequel to something I missed or some such. Further reading tells me this is what happens at the end of the show, and it's really loving weird to show us the ending before the show even starts.

The first episode is more like scenes from throughout the series stitched together with a bit of foreshadowing about the ending rather than it being exactly what happens.

The first two episodes of Shin Mazinger have sections that spoil the ending of the series and take place right after the final episode ends. What makes the show so great is you don't recognise how important those sections are until you wrap back around.

I was hoping Shin Mazinger would usher in a new era of these re-imaginings of classic '70s super robot shows, but instead it got ignored for the most part and now we can barely get competent mecha shows as it is.
