Yeah, for $6,000 you can get just about any of the best luthiers in the world to build you your dream guitar with exact customization on basically every possible customizable part.

For $3,500-$5,000 you can buy a top-of-the-line production guitar from basically any of the best guitar companies in the world, any of which would laugh the best most expensive Gibson you can find these days out of the building.

Gibson's prices are ludicrous by basically any measurable degree.

I can honestly say that anything I've never made has been more playable than any modern oof the shelf Gibson, I'm not blowing my own trumpet by saying this as in all honesty it's pretty easy to do.

Anyways, for actual content, here are some unfinished ugly-rear end guitars I've got going at the moment (apologies for poor quality, had to get them off my facebook as lost most of pictures in a hard drive crash)

Posted this earlier, but gently caress it. Made from the finest wood that my old bed had to offer. I actually sold this one!

Frying pan guitar, hosed up the paint job and I've not been able to refinish it yet (edge is rough because I've not sanded them yet)

Neck is from a 60's Japanese guitar, it's made of beech and smells funny, even after i removed all the finish. I decided to make a body out of two bits of ash I had lying around, not sure what I was thinking tbh.

The body is spalted beech and it's a loving dog to sand as it's got soft patches, the neck came from a cheapo strat-copy that was imported by a now non-existant company who specialised in 'Christian instruments'.

I should probably finish these at some point...

Yea, I usually make my own necks, all the ones here are made using pre-made necks because it's easy and making a neck is a lot of effort for a 'B' grade guitar. Only done a couple of neck-thru's as people don't really ask for them.

Self-taught, I had lots of power-tools as my day used to be builder and easy access to wood (piles and piles of old hardwood furniture), I was unemployed at the time so it was something to do.

It's disgusting isn't it? I almost didn't want to sell it. I sold it for £200 eventually, despite its looks it plays pretty well! If you aren't fussy about the wood used (that one was made out of pine and plywood) I could probably go down to £175 + postage. Don't have PM's so hit me up at wfwild@hotmail.co.uk if you are interested!

agiles are basically rebranded epiphones/ibanezes depending on model made in the same korean factories, except they're paying whoever does the fretwork a little more because they always have really well-dressed frets

gibson's the one company where you really are just paying for the name on the headstock, which nobody except the dr. faustuses of the world gives a poo poo about. at least fender still puts out an okay instrument at a reasonable price, and you can still get a japanese made one (which are the best, hands down) for only a few hundred

if you can find one the early 90s mexican standard fenders which had a small "squier series" label on the headstock are really good. at the time only the bodies and final assembly were done in mexico. the necks were still made across the border in ontario because they hadn't set up the tooling yet in the new factory, and they shipped them back up north for final qc to ensure the mexicans got it right

Fender are pretty good price-wise as long as you stay away from artist models and the oddly priced american-standards.

Worth noting that PRS post-1994 are really terrible price-wise, £1000+ for something made on a CNC machine is not on at all, they also have these horrible neck heels for some reason, makes it way harder to reach the lower frets than it should do. Rickenbacker are also ok as long as you don't mind thin necks and over-priced replacement parts. Heard good things about mosrite but I've never actually seen one in the flesh.

Eastwood guitars are pretty good if you like oddball stuff, just stay away from anything with less than 21 frets.

Famous guitar players never use actualy branded instruments, if Gibson signs a deal with someone to play nothing but Les-Pauls on stage they will go to a master luthier, get them to build a bespoke instrument them slap gibson on the headstock and make the luthier sign an NDA, it's skeevy as gently caress.

Fender four strings are really the only basses that should ever be played.

This explains any endorsement deal of drums, bass, and guitar In the 80s. So many assholes bought $150 guitars in 1986 because EVH had a Kramer logo on the headstock.

5 string basses are kinda strange but at least they aren't 6 string basses. The bassist I play with has been playing 5 strings for so long that he's just so used to using that B string as a placeholder/finger resting spot and feels uncomfortable playing a 4 string.

That Hoffner bass made popular by McCartney is fun as hell to play. Def a unique sound but lots of fun.
