I made it with my dad when I was 16 and I will never get rid of it. :3:

Anyway, I used to be really into exactly the same guys and music Dr. Faustus is catching poo poo for. If it was super hard to play, that meant it was Good MusicTM and I was into it no matter how boring and unlistenable it was. Then I actually went to a G3 one year and realized that Steve Vai had no soul. It happened sometime between the part when he came prancing out swinging his guitar around his neck and poo poo and when he started playing in front of his strategically positioned fan so his shirts and hair and stuff would billow dramatically while he shredded. Even as an 18 year old kid I remembered thinking to myself "this is pretty loving stupid". I was pretty pissed at myself for avoiding good music for so long when I finally started listening to new things.

Yep, same. I'd hang out on guitar forums where they'd gush over Dream Theater and jazz fusion and I tried to play along with it but I just couldn't. I got sick of trying to convince myself I liked prog rock or wanted to play it and was like gently caress this I'm gonna play things I like.

I think a lot of guitar players go through this. I definitely did. I have managed to find exactly one shredder with decent phrasing. Guthrie Govan. And as expressive as the guy is, it's still basically impossible to sit through an entire song on one of his records.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUZK9dasP8s

That video shows the guy has some decent feel and musicality despite all the notes, but it's just him messing around over a backing track. His actual album is way more experimental and he's a lot more acrobatic on the fretboard... so in other words it's basically soulless and unlistenable. If you ever want to clear every girl out of a room, put a shredder's album on. It is the musical equivalent of watching a drag race. Kind of awe inspiring, but ultimately pretty pointless, and almost entirely misses the big picture.

really? what was so disappointing about it? the only complaint i ever hear about the g707 is that it lacks a hex fuzz circuit, which can be modded in relatively easily.

For me it may have been down to how the guitar hadn't been that well kept in the 20+ years it had been around. It felt super light and the neck was bowed, but every attempt to adjust the neck just made it worse thanks to the "stabilizer" fin. If you can find a nice CLEAN example of a G707 that had been taken care of, maybe think about it, but I won't ever buy one again and I've got a GR700 with the revision v1.5 chip.

Steve Vai is basically your corny Long Island dad, if he were gifted with infinite guitar-playing ability. That being said, I still really like the guy. "Bangkok/Fire Garden Suite" is a terrific bit of music.

Goon post ahead:

Getting into shred is like getting into a modern Elder Scrolls game. The flash and technicality is at first overwhelming and awe inspiring and really impressive, enough so that all you do is just kind of wander around with your mouth hanging open because of how impressive everything seems, but over time you start realizing that the flash is all there is to it. There's no depth at all, and pretty soon all you can see is just how shallow and empty it is, so you put it down and ignore it.

So yeah nobody is saying they're ashamed of music they used to like, they're just saying that they liked it once upon a time but have since realized it's stupid!

As for Vai, yeah his music is dumb but the guy has the coolest music room ever and it's perfect for this thread:

Yup precisely. I was even thinking of Guthrie Govan as one of the bulletproof artists they'd reference. I had a similar realisation with art - I can appreciate stuff like that from a technical standpoint, but it would never go in my playlist.
