...of SCIENCE! posted:I was kind of excited to see that Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony was on Netflix because I was expecting cringe-y, trainwreck goodness but it's a milquetoast, uncritical doc that was paid for and produced by fans of the show. There's a few mildly funny parts but it's mostly just boring.

This is why documentaries about fandom shouldn't be made by fans.

Although really does anyone ~want~ to know about the seamy underbelly of MLP fandom? I dunno if I could stomach that. I already have a buddy who likes to freak me out by sending youtube videos those weirdos make interacting with CG ponies.

I started watching Fatal Attractions and it's quite good. It's a TV-show about people who have exotic pets and usually something really bad happened with them. The show has well made dramatizations of the incidents and the cases are pretty unique so every episode feels fresh.

I liked Maron a lot, though that might be because a lot of his issues (addiction, anger, anxiety) are mine also and I handle them in similarly neurotic and dumb ways when I'm not on top of my game. I think my favorite bit was The way he goes off on Ken Jeong about his own partying days; loving hilarious and spot-on in lots of ways. I understand the comparison to [b]Louie/b] (which I love), but honestly it's not trying to do similar things very often. It struck me much more like Curb Your Enthusiasm. Pretty wacky at times and with a cohesive narrative arc for each episode.

Take everything that made the show interesting and everything you enjoyed about it and replace it with boring rear end poo poo with like, zero character development because every season has different characters. It's really a show that stretched a neat premise wayyyy too far. I was pretty sick of serial killer killing serial killers by season 3.maybe that's just me though.

It's a horror movie that actually gets better the more you watch it, and it's one of my favorites to watch with friends just to see the "OH poo poo"s go from being scared to "OH poo poo"s from all the pieces coming together. It also has one of the best horror movie endings ever.

I saw it a while ago and don't remember a lot of the details, but I recall liking it well enough. It is kind of depressing in that the two main people clearly have a lot of problems, but some of the stuff they say is pretty funny. I recall that they didn't like each other very much and that one of them kept insulting the other in her interviews and they end up getting in a fight when they meet up at a Tiffany concert near the end.

The Great Happiness Space - Just know it's about guys that are paid to entertain women at a club. Go in blind. After Porn Ends - It's about porn stars dealing with life after retirement. Lots of nudity, and not a very happy story, but I found it fascinating. Confessions of a Superhero - Those weird people that dress up as superheroes and stand on the streets in popular vacation spots? It's all about them. The American Scream - Families in a small town that dedicate their October to making the best haunted house. I love this movie. Trekkies - The title says it all. There were some other great ones, but they're no longer available on Netflix (but used to be). If you wanna look beyond, they may be on Amazon, and they are: Special When Lit - Pinball; I haven't seen it, but I hear it's decent The Rock-A-Fire Explosion - People getting nostalgia boners over animatronics; very good movie American Scary - late-night horror movie hosts Spellbound - great documentary about kids in a spelling bee Word Wars - professional Scrabble players King of Kong - People that want to set arcade game records. Awesome movie and worth watching if you haven't yet Wordplay - people love the New York Times crossword puzzles They Came To Play - documents the Fifth International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs; kind of slow, but I found it inspiring

Trek Nation is one I found interesting as it specifically focuses on Gene Roddenberry's son (who really did not give a poo poo about Star Trek until well into adulthood) and is less about fans as it is about Gene the second trying to understand his dad through the fans and the show.

Shy Boys IRL is a documentary about the Involuntary Celibacy ("Incel") subculture. https://vimeo.com/28466163 It's one of the most cringe-worthy things I've ever seen, a bunch of guys who blame women for their inability to have sex and construct elaborate -filled narratives about why women don't appreciate "nice guys" like them. Later on it covers some PUA people and the incels' meeting with them.

The thing is from what I can tell this really does accurately reflect the culture. Unlike alot of fandoms, Juggalos don't give a gently caress what others think of them and really make no effort at acceptance. Alot of the trolling is towards them rather then it being them that are butting in and demanding that people take them seriously. Juggalos are pretty hosed up but they're also just doing their own thing and they're (mostly) not really hurting anyone. Out of all the little subcultures, they're probably the one I find most fascinating.
