Dr.Caligari posted:Not 'gold' per say, but is this a good deal? Oh come on, that is literally gold At that price it's hard to go wrong but I would worry that there is a reason it's that cheap. The body may be rustproof but the frame isn't. I think the 85 would be the first year of the tuned port engine... If not then it has the most hilariously restricted small block Chevy ever, the crossfire.

Dr.Caligari posted:Not 'gold' per say, but is this a good deal? I hate you so much right now, but not as much as I should. I've been wanting a later model c4 for a while now (pref a 96 with the LT8, but anything without the L98 is what i really want, which is what this one has.) The earlier models of these didn't have the dreaded optispark, so at least you're good on that front. Things to check. Not all are disqualifiers, but these are common problems: * Interior door panels. More expensive to fix than you'd think. * worn carpet around the speakers. If it's worn, you'll have to get a custom replacement, or you'll just have to live with it. * windshield weatherstripping * Check for rust spots: Battery well by front drivers wheel is a big one. * Check the tilt steering wheel. if it's floppy when secured, you'll be fixing that soon. * Check rear differential. They leak sometimes. * Electric climate control can be flaky. Check it. * Check the digital dash. It can be flaky. Check EVERYTHING on it. * Check both power seats, make sure everything works. * Standard fluids check of course * Check the equip codes to make sure you get everything that was originally with the car is there. Especially if it was supposed to have BOTH tops (probably not applicable in your case though) The L98 is a slow car in comparison, its only 230hp and does the 1/4 mile about one second less than my cooper S does, stock. But it's a drat nice looking car, ahd i've always had a thing for how these look. Here's what i've used as my checklist, as i'm looking for a similar vintage. Most everything i've seen is either way too expensive, or has way too many poo poo broken (or both) Here's an exhaustive checklist, but what I gave above are things that I've commonly found. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-general-discussion/1150808-things-to-look-for-when-buying-a-c4.html

Oh, wow, I don't know much about vettes, and I guess I assumed one from the mid-80's didn't offer much. I've been to that car lot before, and a large majority of his inventory seems to have rust issues to say the least, so I will pay particularly close attention to that. Thanks for the tips and link, it's nice to have some knowledge of problem areas before looking at something like this.

The L98 responds to simpler mods far better than the Crossfire, since the L98 heads are actually decent. Not as good as the LT1/LT4/L31 heads, but not garbage. I can't remember if it's the Crossfire manifold or the heads that have the intake ports shrunk to literally half the size of any other SBC. It does have the problem of extremely long intake runners, so making it breathe over 5000 RPM requires some significant work on the manifold / plenum / runners (or modify an LT1 intake to clear a distributor and use it).

The L98 cars in the mid-80s ran as fast as mid-5s in the 0-60, that's pretty drat respectable; the LT1 cars were not significantly faster than the late L98s.

My memory is a bit bad, but I really remember the L98's being pretty slow, but i'm still in the early parts of my research. I have not driven an acceptable L98 yet, but the one I did drive (that was in terrible shape) was pretty slow. I guess I shouldn't let that bias me. The fact that those don't have the lovely optisparks should be a plus. With what you and iowncalculus siad, I should rethink my stance. IOwnCalculus, got any good references for mods for the l98's like you were speaking about? I don't know how much you can trust car rags from that era but Car and Driver got a 1991 FX3 Z51 Corvette (with a 250HP L98) to run 0-60 in only 5.2 seconds. They also got a 1985 Z51 'Vette to run the same in 5.6 seconds. Even the L83s run 6.6 seconds in the 60. I drove a '84 Z51 and it felt pretty fast to me, however the fastest car I own is "powered" (relative term) by a 130hp Camry engine, so maybe my opinion does not count.

To be fair, the mods for L98s pretty heavily center on "fix the intake breathing" since the whole point of the TPI was to make a 305 feel as torquey as the 350. Why they never put it on a truck is beyond me. At any rate there are plenty of aftermarket intake setups for the TPI, including base manifolds, runners (shorter, larger diameter, siamesed in some cases), plenums, and even whole replacements like a TPIS miniram. Also, it looks like my thoughts on the LT1 intake conversion are dated at best; the one resource for the mods needed to swap the manifold is lost to the internet, and most interest in using it as an alternative to the miniram seems to have died off years ago. The rest of it, well, the benefit is that a L98 is still a proper GenI SBC, so you have a larger catalog of heads / cams to choose from, and no Optispark to deal with. The L98 heads aren't bad but there's certainly power to be gained from aftermarket or L31 Vortec heads. To drag this back on topic, the wife said no to this fine steed... But, no objections to this one "if that's what you want to drive" IOwnCalculus fucked around with this message at 17:51 on Jan 2, 2014 |

Umm, yes and no. The early ones used the Essex V6, and some of the later models used the Rover V8 (which is a good V8). I would imagine its just like any other car made. Rust, electrical isseus, etc. to watch out for. And then the latest models use their in house designs.
