Nice avatar for that opinion, but I'd agree too. I love Pacific Rim because it was so drat entertaining. There are movies that are superbly made and those that are entertaining and those that actually are both. I will always go for entertaining in preferences.

IDK, I just didn't think there were characters or arcs in Pacific Rim enough for it to be memorable. You can really feel how they scrunched this movie down from the three they intended. And more about TV stuff, I'm doing my semi-annual marathon of Better Off Ted. Really doesn't get enough credit, might be one of my favorite comedies I can think of.

Man, I think I'm late to tell you guys but Showtime is replaying all three seasons of Shameless over the next three days. You should really, really watch it if you haven't. Unfortunately I think the marathon has already started but if you have a Showtime West channel maybe you could just catch the pilot. Not sure.

Holy poo poo definitely watch Shameless. If you miss season 1 that's a shame but you can jump into Season 2 tomorrow. Each season stands mostly alone, anything you miss you can pick up on pretty easily.

^^^ That was a loving classic but that clip cuts out the whole context of it. Reddick came out and acted like he was taking this seriously, and walked out as soon as Andre started making him uncomfortable. And then THAT happened. What's amazing is that there's no way he came up with that on his own; somebody had to PITCH THAT to him. Even with his recent taste for absurd comedy, that's gotta be scary. ufarn posted:I love season 1 and 2 of Shameless, but getting through season 3 is the biggest slog. We just beasted through House of Cards, and since a huge theme of the show is unauthorized leaks, and given the anticipation surrounding upcoming series, how is poo poo about TV series not leaked more often? I remember hearing about George Lucas and the executive producer sitting down with Mark Hamill about Vader being his father, and explaining that no one else will no what Vader was actually saying during the scene, so that if there was a leak it would completely be on Mark. Nowadays these productions are so huge with so many people involved that it seems like a modern miracle that these things don't ever get leaked.

Man, I love giant robot and kaiju movies and I thought that Pacific Rim was just OK. The action scenes were good (for every outstanding sequence like the bit in urban China where the lighting is all done by circling helicopters and it starts with boat club and ends with upper atmosphere swordfighting you get the muddled climax or half the jaegers getting unceremoniously taken out within 30 seconds of entering a fight) but roughly half the movie is boring sparring and training scenes and largely pointless subplots like Mako fighting to be accepted as a pilot (she almost kills everybody the first time she gets in the cockpit and her main contribution to the climax is passing out and needing to be rescued) or the Kaiju organ thieves.Shageletic posted:IDK, I just didn't think there were characters or arcs in Pacific Rim enough for it to be memorable. It feels like they should have made Mako the protagonist since she's the one who undergoes the actual hero's journey and grows as a person throughout the movie while Charlie Hunnam starts as a top pilot and just kind of learns to believe in himself again. Or just made Charlie Day the main character since he was the most consistently entertaining thing in the movie and was basically an audience surrogate being a huge overenthusiastic geeky fanboy.

You could survive a marathon but it might shave a few years off your life. I actually haven't finished Season 3 yet for exactly this reason. Its just hard and you have to be in the right place to watch. I'm hoping to sit down this week and finish it but its been a rough couple of weeks and I'm not sure I want that sort of emotional sink on my down time. So if you're reading this go to Showtime or Showtime West right now and start recording Shameless. Record as many of the episodes as you can and pick them up where you can because it is easy to pick up. Frank's a prick, Fiona's a hero, the kids have issues, life sucks except when it doesn't. Then once you record all those episodes take your time. After every episode or two play with a baby or adopt a puppy. For God sakes don't force yourself to watch 3 years of Shameless at once unless you've got a strong support system with you. Its great but its hard.

Ya, I avoid spoilers like the plague (like seriously when Axel spoils Brick in The Middle I was pissed) and that may be why I miss out on these things but anonymous leaking would really be child's play at this point so even a NDA doesn't seem too useful.

Getting back into Breaking Bad, when it got boring (in season 2 or 3) didn't feel as taxing as Shameless; I could just absorb what went on - or didn't go on - in a passive manner, something Shameless doesn't allow me for some reason. ufarn fucked around with this message at 02:07 on Jan 4, 2014 |

Babylon 5 is basically sci fi Lord of the Rings with the meta narrative of it being completely planned out from beginning to end. For me, there's an earnestness to the show that makes it incredibly endearing in spite of the lackluster acting and hilariously low budget, but you either embrace it or you don't. However, I don't think it's a better show than BSG, Farscape, or most of Star Trek for example, because despite the supposed planned out narrative, the other elements of the show never came together as well as in those other shows. But it builds towards a conclusion I found very satisfying. The AV Club seems to agree with me on that, if that way of arguing can convince you. For whats it's worth, the 24-ishness is still there to some degree, but it's massively turned down compared to the second half of Season 2.

Sometimes the interviews are obviously chopped up so they're not answering the question you just heard, sometimes they're obviously in on it the whole time, sometimes you think they're not in on it but they do something ludicrous at the end so you think 'ok I guess they were' then sometimes, like the Mel B one, she just seems completely oblivious to what she's just been part of and there didn't seem to be much in the way of editing tricks. Mel B has never come across as a good actress before, we've all seen Spice World. And who the gently caress is Russell Brand?!
