Seriously, read the thread, if your just tuning in. Not like "Argghhh follow the rules and lurk before posting!" If your co-workers are still on vacation and things are slow, spend the day reading. Great stuff, here.

I don't know, at this point just learning to live with mom's rules might be his best option. The thread spent like a year encouraging him to get therapy, get a job, get therapy, get a place to live, get therapy, get medication, and get therapy. It doesn't look like Benny is going to be able to live as an independent adult any time soon, so learning how to live peacefully as a dependant is the next best thing.

I decided to hate myself and browse e/n tonight, so I saw this thread. I've jumped around a bit and want to address the job interview stuff around page 20 or so. I had to "interview" for an internship about three weeks ago. It was a requirement for my degree so I thought it was like a cookie-cutter "are you a sentient human being" type of interview. It was not. I got quizzed on the corporation, the specific facility, and a bunch of other stuff. I got most of it wrong, but I managed to bullshit my way through it well enough. I'm pretty sure the only reason I got accepted is that I expressed that I was a sponge willing to soak up any knowledge the supervisor would tell me about the industry and that I was willing to volunteer my time above and beyond what was required. (Required time is one full work day a week, so no big deal.) The woman interviewing me could have easily said "Holy poo poo, this guy did nothing to prepare for this interview, I want nothing to do with this rear end in a top hat." She would have been entirely justified in doing so. Somehow I managed to turn it around in the hour primarily due to expressing my willingness to work my rear end off and learn every single thing I could about the department, facility, and corporation. Because that's the point of an internship. I did all of this without a suit jacket, BTW. So maybe just express an attitude of humility and curiosity? Or have we already decided that this guy is hopeless?

The difference is that Benny is interviewing primarily for things like retail and the food industry. If you're interviewing for a job as a short order cook, it's really not a, "I don't know much about the industry, but I sure am willing to learn! (Except I will blatantly ignore the advice you give me and then wonder why I'm not getting called back)." There's a dude coming in right behind him who's been doing the job since he was 15 and will follow instructions.

I'm no paragon of virtue, I've washed out of jobs before and it sucks. I basically hit the reset button on my life when I went back to school a couple of years ago, and I'm hoping prospective employers see it the same way.

You don't really get the full impact unless you see the "I'm so excited about this job I applied for, the interview went well, I got the job, they let me go" cycle repeated a few times. There's a reason why e/n seriously suggested that Benny should consider applying for disability payments. You also have to read his posts rather than skim them. The fact that he's literate can distract you from his "interesting" thought processes.

In fairness, Benny is getting psych treatment these days. This thread contains the perfect combination of an OP who can't/won't make effective changes in his own life no matter how much he wants to, a bunch of doubtless well-meaning advice and encouragement, some good and some terrible, and a fair bit of the usual abject mockery, accusations of things he's never actually done, crazed unrealistic expectations and pompous moralizing, etc. It's basically the platonic ideal of the E/N experience all in one place, and well worth reading in its entirety for that alone.

No, "this sucks" and "Manchild King" and Two Worlds and all the old legends were still amazing sagas in their own right. Benny has been really good but there just aren't enough twists and he doesn't post often enough. Remember the agonizing spirals of this sucks and his coworker girl? Even in a similar format to benny's issues (identical cycles of failure repeated over and over) the this sucks thread was great because he kept panic-posting for so long.

They were legends, yes, but they were legendary because they were at least 2-3 standard deviations outside of a typical e/n poster. Benny, on the other hand, is impressive in his mediocrity. It's like someone took every sterotype of a goon down a well and combined it into one person. Poor decision making skills, lack of motivation, only replying to posts that confirm his worldview, it's like someone's custom-made a e/n posting bot for goons to make fun of.

Two Worlds was so depressing that at least one (and I think two) Helldump threads went from mocking him to trying to help him out. He was also so hosed up and creepy that those threads turned from helping him back to mocking him again. He was bad, as in the Goon Love thread above.

Ursine Asylum posted:Not going to lie, this is probably the closest to the ideal form of an e/n poster we've had since that guy with the WoW girlfriend whose coworker was giving us status updates on what was actually going on. I'm the coworker. "Grammar Notz" is probably still banned, but did finally completely sever ties with Gooey. Let me clean up what he sent me over facebook chat: "St. Patrick's day (2013) she begged and begged for me to come to some party after work, so I did. She's there with like 3 guys and me. I'm not drinking cause I have to drive home, and because of the gout complications. She goes up and checks on someone who was spending too long in the bathroom (He'd drank a considerable amount of everclear, so there was some concern). So I'm there for about an hour when she goes upstairs. I text her reminding her that I know no one at this party, and to hurry back down. 25 minutes later the rest of us decide to leave because we know what's happening upstairs (There's faint noises coming through the floor at this point). 20 minutes later she text me, and says I'd have to come up and say goodbye because she's passing out. I tell her I'm already home. She texts the next morning and asks where I went, I told her, and she pretended to not remember loving anyone, and tried to apologize to me. I told her "You didn't cheat on me. You cheated on Tim. All you did is prove to me that I would never be able to trust you when you're out with friends without me. I can't date someone I can't trust, so if you ever want to gently caress give me a call. Otherwise be safe, and have a good life." She never took him up on the booty call option and he hasn't spoken to her since. "Tim" was the guy she was living with at the time the thread happened. She was cooking/cleaning/babysitting for this guy with whom she "used to" have a benefits relationship. They weren't dating during the thread. Sure. Grammar Notz actually asks women out now. Allegedly. Unfortunately I don't work with him anymore but we keep in touch.

Your problem isn't your education, it's your functional abilities. A 3.1 from a lower-tier school won't get you into a decent grad school, and even a decent grad school isn't going to get you a professorship. You might be able to swing community college, or rather someone else in your position could if he actually had executive functioning skills. Not to mention the fact that it's too late to take the GRE now. Even if you do apply, it won't be until next fall for admittance in 2015.
