Info: This is working for the Astronomy department at UC Santa Cruz, one of the premier astronomy institutions in the world, so it has full benefits and stuff. This job is for supporting a primarily Mac based environment, as most professors use their macs as front ends for Unix programs. It breaks down to about 70% Mac, 20% Windows, 10% Linux. The job prefers someone who has a coding background, as a lot of the problems that come up are Unix/Linux compiler issues and such. SysAdmin background is a plus. I've gone through RHCE, ITIL, VMware ICM, in the past 6 months and will have a Puppet class soon. Others have gone through the VCP class here. Re-posting since one of my bros is leaving his position on our team to move closer to his family  Who are we? E-Commerce Division of a large retailer Where are we? Downtown Chicago IL, right in the middle of the Loop. What are we looking for? Linux Ninjas. We're the systems engineering team and we're responsible for 2000+ servers in our data centers, about 90% of which are running CentOS/RHEL. Bonus points if you know AIX or Windows Server, but these aren't 100% necessary. I'm not going to put down that you need 5+ years of RHEL experience or a bachelors degree in any particular field. If you're good, we want you, but be prepared for a very technical interview. Please also be familiar with vSphere. You don't have to be godly or anything but we expect you to be able to hop into vcenter and do basic stuff like creating a new VM or hotplugging additional resources to an existing guest. What are we not looking for? People who need hand-holding. Self-reliance is crucial because you'll be on call sometimes and being able to put your head down and just figuring poo poo out is something you'll need to be able to do. How do I apply? Shoot your resume to matt@cidrick.org and I'll forward it on to HR. Anything else? It helps to be a huge nerd. The guys you're working with all have varying levels of nerdery, but if things like playing with new converged network blades or testing out setting up a new ipxe/kickstart environment doesn't seem like fun to you, you're probably not for us. Also, you'll be in the on-call rotation. Right now we're on a 6-week rotation so you'll be on call for one out of those 6 weeks. You'll have to put up with 3AM phone calls on occasion, but we're pretty good about comp time and work-from-home days so it's not like you'll be worked ragged or anything. Finally, Black Friday weekend is no joke. EVERYONE is going to be on call the week of Thanksgiving. Be prepared to bring your blackberry and laptop to Turkey Day Dinner.

My current company just got bought out, and my boss told me, "Work on your résumé, I don't know what's gonna happen to any of us." So I am looking for a job! My experience: I've got a BS in InfoSys and I've been working various IT jobs since I graduated in 2009. My current position started as desktop support in an XP environment, but I've done a lot of account creation and maintenance in AD and Exchange, image creation, and some scripting. I ended up getting to take a big role in our rollout of Windows 7, setting up the Server 2012 box, installing SCCM, and building the image, compiling updates, and creating a few software packages. I've worked a bit with VMware as well, building an ESXi box for testing, and working with our virtualized production servers. Before that, I did desktop support for various schools at Fort Lee, helpdesk for a large power company, and worked on a network migration project for the state. Oh My Science posted:There are a ton of open source projects with lovely or incomplete documentation which you could contribute to from the comfort of your home. Find one that interests you and open a dialogue with the maintainers if you don't know where to start. Looking at github / source control issue lists is a great way to start. Not only do you get experience with a source control workflow, your github account tracks your activity and contributions. I can't think of anything better to show potential employers than an active github profile. Thanks for your input! I'll most definitely look into it.
