HIRING: UC Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, CA Position: Full time first tier helpdesk with some scripting/coding. Primarily Mac/Unix based. Pay:~45k-50k, may be more if they decide to hire as a second tier position with more coding experience (then it is like ~70k). Qualifications: Bachelors in CS, Astro, Engineering, or something with a bit of coding most likely preferred, but work experience can be taken into consideration. Info: This is working for the Astronomy department at UC Santa Cruz, one of the premier astronomy institutions in the world, so it has full benefits and stuff. This job is for supporting a primarily Mac based environment, as most professors use their macs as front ends for Unix programs. It breaks down to about 70% Mac, 20% Windows, 10% Linux. The job prefers someone who has a coding background, as a lot of the problems that come up are Unix/Linux compiler issues and such. SysAdmin background is a plus. Any experience with IDL or other such specific Astronomy programs is a plus plus. Look on jobs.ucsc.edu in the near future for a public posting. We've had so many "I am a Windows only person sorry" people apply that I thought I'd post on here. I am leaving the position (got a job working more in network support than helpdesk) so I am not the one to contact for this, but keep your eyes peeled on that site for it if interested. jeeves fucked around with this message at 22:03 on Dec 18, 2013 |

Submission deadline: Job posting was re-opened by HR. Now closes on the 20th. Hiring: Merit Networks, Ann Arbor, MI Positions: 2 (two) Infrastructure Engineers. The more accurate title is Linux Systems Administrator. Qualifications: Usual HR stuff (BS or equivalent experience). As team lead, I'm looking for 3+ years of Linux administration, perl/python/bash (one or more) programming, experience with puppet/mcollective/rabbitmq (all is a plus), and experience in virtualized environments. You really should see our job posting before applying - http://umjobs.org/job_detail/90887/infrastructure_engineer . Info: You'll be helping my team, IT Service Infrastructure, replenish our ranks. We run all the IT hardware in the datacenter, layers 1 through 6. We are looking for folks that have linux server sysadmin experience, that can script and think for themselves, know how to or are willing to automate everything, and are willing to help with hardware (when needed). We're reasonably well puppetized and looking to do more. We're currently running a mix of Centos 5 & 6, some RHEL 5, and Ubuntu 12, with the long term trend being towards Ubuntu 12 due to application requirements. We are also heavily virtualized - at last count, 300+ production VMs and 100+ test/dev VMs. You may be drawn in to some pre-sales meetings as a Subject Matter Expert. In my experience, having entered the organization through the job I'm posting about, you won't get drawn in too often. If you're content to hide in your cube and create some amazing scripts or conglomeration of software, you'll have plenty of time to do that. Our end goals, puppet-wise, are to have most major applications that require some end-user configuration be configurable through puppet by changing values in hiera, and also be able to automate the entire deployment of the server from the moment you clone the template to the moment you can log in to test the puppet-configured services. We are a good chunk of the way there. There is an on-call cycle which, at normal staffing levels, is an 8 week rotation. You will also be the escalation point for the next on-call person the following week. Lastly, we offer training. I've gone through RHCE, ITIL, VMware ICM, in the past 6 months and will have a Puppet class soon. Others have gone through the VCP class here. If there's a good reason to go through the training, we can usually make it happen. oogs fucked around with this message at 16:40 on Jan 8, 2014 |

Re-posting since one of my bros is leaving his position on our team to move closer to his family Who are we? E-Commerce Division of a large retailer Where are we? Downtown Chicago IL, right in the middle of the Loop. What are we looking for? Linux Ninjas. We're the systems engineering team and we're responsible for 2000+ servers in our data centers, about 90% of which are running CentOS/RHEL. Bonus points if you know AIX or Windows Server, but these aren't 100% necessary. I'm not going to put down that you need 5+ years of RHEL experience or a bachelors degree in any particular field. If you're good, we want you, but be prepared for a very technical interview. Please also be familiar with vSphere. You don't have to be godly or anything but we expect you to be able to hop into vcenter and do basic stuff like creating a new VM or hotplugging additional resources to an existing guest. What are we not looking for? People who need hand-holding. Self-reliance is crucial because you'll be on call sometimes and being able to put your head down and just figuring poo poo out is something you'll need to be able to do. How do I apply? Shoot your resume to matt@cidrick.org and I'll forward it on to HR. Anything else? It helps to be a huge nerd. The guys you're working with all have varying levels of nerdery, but if things like playing with new converged network blades or testing out setting up a new ipxe/kickstart environment doesn't seem like fun to you, you're probably not for us. Also, you'll be in the on-call rotation. Right now we're on a 6-week rotation so you'll be on call for one out of those 6 weeks. You'll have to put up with 3AM phone calls on occasion, but we're pretty good about comp time and work-from-home days so it's not like you'll be worked ragged or anything. Finally, Black Friday weekend is no joke. EVERYONE is going to be on call the week of Thanksgiving. Be prepared to bring your blackberry and laptop to Turkey Day Dinner.

My former employer tried to recruit me for this, I'm a bit stuck where I am. Network Technician in Panama City, FL, requires a secret clearance and a CCNA would be really helpful. They're a great company, small enough that the owner and COO know most everybody's names, and if you're cool the owner will send you a bottle of his tequila for Christmas (I heard, I'm not cool ) Don't apply if you don't have a clearance and some network experience, like I said they're a small company so their HR would get swamped. And don't PM me, I don't know anything more about the job and I can't recommend anyone. http://trace.catsone.com/careers/index.php?m=portal&a=details&jobOrderID=3408281

My current company just got bought out, and my boss told me, "Work on your résumé, I don't know what's gonna happen to any of us." So I am looking for a job! My experience: I've got a BS in InfoSys and I've been working various IT jobs since I graduated in 2009. My current position started as desktop support in an XP environment, but I've done a lot of account creation and maintenance in AD and Exchange, image creation, and some scripting. I ended up getting to take a big role in our rollout of Windows 7, setting up the Server 2012 box, installing SCCM, and building the image, compiling updates, and creating a few software packages. I've worked a bit with VMware as well, building an ESXi box for testing, and working with our virtualized production servers. Before that, I did desktop support for various schools at Fort Lee, helpdesk for a large power company, and worked on a network migration project for the state. What I'm looking for: Something in low-level server support or involving SCCM. What I'm NOT looking for: Call center, entry level stuff Where I live: Richmond, VA Where I'm looking: Within an hour's drive of Richmond. I'm not a programmer or a network guy but what I can do is tech-related so I figured this would be a good place to start. My Experience: I graduated with a BA in History in 2009. Currently, I'm enrolled in a Technical Communications post-graduate program and I'm in my co-op term working for a multinational bank during the day. My role here is very limited so I'm seeking to do work on the side after hours (for free!). I am an aspiring technical writer with a focus on user design/experience (UX) and software documentation. I employ my writing, editing, and document design skills in all my work. I have worked as a graphic/web designer during my undergrad using Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver. I have experience with InDesign, FrameMaker, and RoboHelp, as well. I can read and hand code HTML/CSS. What I'm looking for: Part-time unpaid technical writing position on open-source or small project software doing documentation, user guides, manuals, job aids, user help, etc. What I'm NOT looking for: Data entry, graphic/webpage design Where I live: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Where I'm looking: Anywhere. All submissions will be online only. When I can start: Immediately (did I mention unpaid?). Requirements: Workload completed by or around May 2014 when I return to class to finish my program.
