:shobon:
Awwwww. Elephants are kind of amazing. If a group of them on the move happens to find the remains of a dead elephant, they gather around it and hold a sort of little memorial service, quietly rumbling to each other, picking up bones and passing them from trunk to trunk. Sometimes they'll cover the body with branches or dirt. They're the only non-human animals known to hold a kind of funeral, and they've even been known to do this for dead humans (or in one case a woman they found sleeping, who kept very still when she woke because she was a bit scared of the freaking huge elephants). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant_cognition#Death_ritual
Which is sort of sad but also makes me feel sort of good about how kind they are.

Also, they let me pet their goat. :3:

I visited a monastery in college and my professor mentioned that one time he took a wrong turn and found a hidden baseball diamond out in the woods where the monks sneak off to play games when there are no guests :3:

That right there is a tapir. A lowland tapir, to be more specific.

A quick PSA: This thread has saved me from so many lovely days I've lost count. Thanks, everyone.

And now, some music. Here's two guys from a German power metal band Gamma Ray doing a live acoustic take on one of their songs. Don't worry, the original song notwithstanding there's nothing even remotely metal about this clip:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9HKsvHgs8Q

I'm posting it here because, well, it's just such a feel-good video. The guys are obviously having such a good time it's infectious, and especially the singer Kai Hansen just seems like such an incredibly jolly guy. I'm not sure I've ever seen a video or picture of him where he wasn't smiling from ear to ear.

How a TV show about Pre-historic life would reconstruct a goon.
I went to the nearby mall today with a friend, the pet store there will let you hold, play with, and walk the puppies if you're over 18 and put the barest effort into acting like you're planning to buy.

We spent some time today with this beautiful gal, a 2-month old Siberian Husky with heterochromia. It was her first day out on display and she was very gentle and inquisitive. Combine that with her stunning good looks I don't doubt she'll be snapped up real quick by some rich family.

The original

The thing to remember about metal, thrash, dance and pop is it's all music. And all music follows the same set-up of pattern/timing regardless of what it is, otherwise it becomes discordant noise to our ears. So something like this becomes a melodic ballad. A choir can sing Slayer. An orchestra can play video game music.

But that doesn't make it any less awesome when something like this comes along.

One of my all-time favourites... Christopher Tin's intro makes it that much better.

Holy poo poo, from the Wiki article on Maremma Sheepdogs:

quote:

Recently in Warrnambool, Australia, the world's first trial utilized a Maremma to guard the dwindling penguin population of Middle Island. This project won the 2010 Australian Government Coastcare Award. While using Maremma to guard an endangered species is rare, Maremma along with other breeds of livestock guarding dogs are appreciated by environmentalists because they make it possible for livestock to coexist with predators such as wolves and coyotes, reducing their predation by 70% to 80% or more. National park authorities in Italy, the United States and Canada have promoted use of the Maremma Sheepdog, as well as other types of LGDs, to minimize conflict between endangered predator species and ranchers.

Course, this also serves as proof of why the average person shouldn't own a Maremma because they are a dog that will chew through the loving wall so they can go herd.
