I'd suggest that a midfield of Mata, Gundogan and Vidal would turn any poo poo squad into title challengers anyway, let alone the title holders. But then I guess Liverpool proved that just because you spend the sort of money that would get you a title winning squad doesn't mean you get a title winning squad.

United No.

5 months later

United Mata wants to leave, can we have him?

Chelsea Sure, 45 million and he's yours.

United Best we can do is 37.

Chelsea Okay... I guess...

United Oh yeah and we're going to bid for Luke Shaw. You know, the Chelsea fan who's been called Cole's replacement for the past few years? Yeah him.

Chelsea Can we at least have Rooney at the end of the year?

United OHH sorry! We've just offered him a new 5 year 300k p/w contract!

quote:

I don't think Rooney is a good influence on the club and I think it would be better to get rid of him. This news makes me uneasy, particularly the pay rise which isn't deserved.

-

Why don't you think he's a good influence? He's ambitious and wants the team to succeed and he wants to play with top class players. I think the pay raise is deserved and it means a lot for us to sign a rival player while at the same time keeping our best players.

-

Absolutely!
Rooney's complaints have (allegedly) always been about the club's lack of serious transfer business, which is exactly what we've all been pissed off about for years!

-

Exactly. All Rooney has done is voice the concerns that all of us complain about on here. Never understood why people think he's a bad influence on the club

-

People don't think in depth, they just see "disloyalty" even though he's saying the same things as us.

Oh and he wanted a raise - like everyone wants a raise. Why is it so unreasonable?

-

... and shag a granny or two. lol
Seriously, I WANT the players to have his passion and ambition for the club.
Every single one of them should take a leaf from his book!

quote:

Mike Keegan: 'Proper fans' see positive in United crisis - the end of the day-tripper

Our sports writer tells how long-standing Reds supporters are rising above the hysteria surrounding the club - and hope to reclaim Old Trafford from the 'glory hunters'

I have a mate who is what I like to call a 'proper Man United fan'.

He supports them because he is from around here and because his family has always supported them.

He is the same age as me (35) and grew up on a diet of mediocrity. Slim pickings in which victories over Liverpool felt like cup final triumphs. Cup finals themselves, like the 1985 win over Everton at Wembley, rare, joyous occasions spoken about for weeks and reenacted in the playground.

He does not support United because they provide success in a life devoid of it which, unfortunately, seems to be the main attraction for the vast majority of the 659m worldwide 'followers' the club boast of when telling us about the latest official tyre sponsor in Kathmandu.

And so, in the midst of this CRISIS, he is not on Twitter claiming that this is the end of the world, that David Moyes should be sacked and that United are on the verge of extinction.

He actually can see the positives.

Because for him, this is not the end of his world. It is another chapter in the long tome that is supporting his club through thick and thin and while it might be painful, it is driving the glory hunters away.

I was at Old Trafford last night and there were thousands there like him. United in their support for the manager. Proper Reds who understand that Moyes is not destroying the club but is simply trying to make the best of the hospital pass that was punted his way.
My mate was not there. He cannot bring himself to go to home matches. He goes to away games (when he can get tickets). He hates everything about the matchday experience and what it has become.

Day trippers everywhere. Cameras at the ready. Turn up, sit comfortably and expect to be entertained.

He used to sit in the old 'K' Stand. I was close to it last night. There are still people in there like my mate. A bunch of about a dozen in front of us who, for five minutes, chanted the United Calypso. Nobody joined in - they probably didn't know the words.

Further down I watched as a 30-something bloke stood up on no less than five occasions to try and get a song started. He stopped doing it in the end and slumped back in his seat. Defeated.

All of them could relate the current predicament to the time before Sir Alex and in his early years. A time when the team needed their support and they roared it back at them. These are the people who do not send dummies flying all over Twitter. The Stretford End, to be fair, was full of them.

My mate is thinking of breaking his self-imposed home ban. I'd guess there may be others like him.

This cannot be a bad thing.

There is, of course, the irony that a return to success would no doubt bring the day trippers back.

But for the moment there are 'proper Man United fans' who are more than prepared to look on the bright side of life.
