Are the books and/or show popular in non-English speaking countries?

They've been translated into 20 different languages, mostly European ones but also stuff like Chinese, Vietnamese, and Hebrew. I don't know about the series, but I found a site in Chinese which had reviews for the first season and there's ~83,000 reviews, so I guess it is fairly popular. Also the best comment from that site: quote:Martin, quickly write, okay?

Yeah, and considering Hymengate pits Cersei against Margaery, it forces people to choose sides (hint: everybody's on Margaery's side).

Not sure if it will play out the same in the show, the books have been considerably more subtle with Marge's character, the show went full littlefinger with her. People hate Cersei surely enough but her paranoia will appear a lot more justified in the context of the show.

I liked book Margaery better; so sweet and "innocent" whenever we see her, with her manipulations either being referenced second-hand or else masked behind her assumed good and caring nature. That is until she loses her composure with Cersai.

Its kinda easier to paint Margaery as good, innocent and caring when she's 16 instead of 32. I doubt anyone would buy an oblivious Natalie Dormer. Irish Joe fucked around with this message at 02:54 on Jan 18, 2014 |

So the show went and took a theory that was heavily implied in the book but never actually shown or confirmed (Theon's castration) and ran with it and put the entire thing right on the show. I'm wondering if maybe they will do the same with Oberon poisoning Tywin. If not, I'm sure they will do it with the Hound and the Monastery.

I doubt they will, it's a pretty subtle thing and they avoid them largely (sending regards, etc) because apparently the viewers need everything spoonfed to them. Castrating Theon is just a matter of doing it, to do the Oberyn poison thing they'd have to set up what the poison is, opportunity, etc. Plus it ultimately doesn't even matter. I just don't see them taking the time for it.

I was actually wondering to myself today that they might make these subtle theory things explicit when they overtake the books and spoil us on something we could have figured out when reading and speculating. Like if Theon's castration was on screen before it was in a book.

rypakal posted:Theon the dickless wonder was an "unconfirmed" book theory about as much as Renly being gay was. True. But it is possible to read the books and not know Renly was gay or Theon was dickless until someone tells you and then everything clicks and it all makes sense. A lot of people were like that. It is 100% impossible to watch the show and not know Theon is dickless and Renly has 1 dick too many.

The problems that the later books have are intrinsic to their structure; a structure which the tv show is clinging to closely for the most part.
