what is the easiest way to transfer many gigabytes from my windows 8.1 laptop to my windows 7? I guess its by using cable, but does any software ease the process?

If you have some time, you can just share a folder to your network and copy your files in explorer.

Hiking question again: do I really need to buy a hydration pack-compatible backpack to make use of hydration reservoirs? Or do some bags have the "capability" to carry one? I don't really want to part with my camera bag so I'm showing pics of some parts in my bag that would possibly make it suitable for carrying one:

- Mesh slot behind the bag wide enough to fit a 15" laptop (has large openings at the bottom left and right corners)
- Trekking pole holders, I think?
- Multiple attachment points at the strap

Sometimes the hydration packs end up folding up in the bottom of a pocket that's too large, but you can just pull on the tube to make it work.

The main problem in your case is that it's around freezing so the tube or mouthpiece might ice up and leave you without water. I'd just go with a water bottle or two. Wide-mouth is fine but doesn't matter if you don't need a compatible filter.

Can Windows 8 now be set to go to the classic desktop on boot now without any third party fuckery? I only used it for a few days when it first came out and it was annoying, but I need to get a new laptop and that's what's out there now. I have zero interest in metro or the app store. Is everything else accessible through the normal desktop?

That's possible for 8.1 at least, and probably pretty straight-forward, since I don't remember how I even did it. I don't go to the start screen at all, myself, and haven't noticed anything lacking.

The main difference between your pack and and one made to hold a camelbak or something is that the latter would have a little hook to hang the reservoir from (so it doesn't fold and stop working) and a little hole at the top of the pack where the tube would come out. Some of the nicer ones will also hold the reservoir in a separate, waterproofed compartment so if it sweats or leaks it doesn't gently caress up everything else.

They're nice to have, but if you don't expect to use it much in the future you probably would indeed be better off with bottled water. The main benefit of one of these packs is that it encourages you to drink more often which will keep you better hydrated.

e: I've tried and failed to put a reservoir in a mesh slot like the one on the back of your pack, just FYI. When full of water the reservoir is simply too bulky to fit. They bulge a whole bunch.

Nah, he's probably not going to be out long enough before it warms up to worry about that. Also since you're drinking often the water is moving and it rarely ices.

It's just google maps? I had a laptop start doing that to all dark blue/black colors and I never did get it fixed. I don't know if it was the graphics cards or what, but the hard drive died eventually and I replaced the whole computer.

To answer your question, it is not doing it on any computer I have used the past few days.

I just applied for a passport but I have a lingering fear that due to issues with my identity (oh there will be followup questions) processing for it may be delayed past my travel date in April.

If I bought plane tickets now, would travel insurance that the airline/website offers cover "not qualifying for passport"? Or am I forced to wait until I had my passport in hand?

It depends on the airline , but most won't actually reimburse you for the price of the ticket but you would basically get a credit to your account that you can use on a local flight that expires in a year.

What's the best way to ship something that is about 70 pounds, 16x14x10 inches?

It's pretty durable and made of metal (it's a korean war era shortwave radio built like a drat tank, as you can possibly tell by the weight), so I'm mostly worried about a container that can hold it without breaking. A little padding will probably be a good idea though.

I'm worried that this calls for a wooden crate, which I don't know how to obtain, pack with, or ship. I do work in a research lab that sees some wooden crates come through sometimes, so I could try to watch for a used one.

Take it to a UPS store, or failing that, ask the mail room at your work. If you get shipments that require wooden crates, they'll probably know.

I honestly can't remember. I don't think you will need a pencil. I brought my backpack and they just let me keep it in the next room while I took the computer test so you can bring anything you want, just not into the actual test room.

Bring your own. That's what I did. In case things have changed in the last 10 years, ask before you go into the test room, they'll tell you if they provide them or if you can bring in your own. In any case, as long as you have backups of your own, you will definitely have a writing utensil one way or another.

All 4G phones have SIM cards. If you need a special one for global travel, call Verizon and they should mail you out one, but I don't think that's needed on newer phones.

70 lbs is the magic number. Under 70lbs you can ship UPS, over 70 lbs you have to ship freight. So weigh it and see where you're at. If you can get a box that fits pretty good, you should be able to ship in cardboard - don't re-use one of those flimsy Amazon boxes, but get a decent 250lb-test box. I think a tight fit will be key - it won't get beat up as long as that radio isn't sliding 6" and slamming against the side of the box every time it tips.

If it's over 70lbs by itself build a crate around it (2x4s or 1x4s and ship it that way. It's not rocket science. Screws and wood, make a box.

Sorry for the kinda depressing question, but here goes: I had my cat put to sleep yesterday. I took her body home with me, but it's winter, so the ground is much too frozen to dig into and bury her. So I just took her out into the snow and sort of placed her under a tree where more snow could cover her. (I live in a very rural area)

BUT then I thought... her body is full of whatever chemical they used to put her to sleep, right? I mean, if some coyote or other wild animal comes and chews on her, are they going to get sick? Much as I want to have some ~meaningful thing~ where she returns to nature, I really don't want to be poisoning random wildlife! Could this be a problem?

I hated it because of the presentation: here are a bunch of garbage apps that you didn't ask for! All over your screen! And it's different from bloatware because reasons! So I used Classic Shell until my wife told me about syncing metro environments between PCs and I spent a little time customizing it and learning new shortcuts and now I'm mostly OK with it. For the OP, I basically just did this stuff: http://www.zdnet.com/photos/the-metro-haters-guide-to-customizing-windows-8-consumer-preview/6350390 Not being able to set a theme for the tiles sucks though, and I still haven't found a shortcut for switching users.

Readability will apparently do this, it'll email books to your kindle and you can download articles as epubs and convert them to mobi using Calibre. I tested the email-to-kindle feature from the website once and it didn't really work, but I had also been messing around with my kindle email address so YMMV.

Don't leave your cat outside! Some animal will definitely find her if you only covered her up with snow.

I might suggest getting her cremated and then holding onto the urn until summer, when you could then bury her. Ask your vet if there's someplace in your area that cremates pets. Its a little easier to keep an urn around for extended periods of time for obivious reasons.

Sorry about your cat. :smith:

Quit dragging your heel. Converse shoes wear out pretty quickly, but Airwalks and Vans should not. I have a couple of pairs of those that I've had for probably 10+ years and the soles are just fine.

Pay attention to how you walk and listen for any scuffing and try to adjust your gait so it doesn't happen. Either that or you're just going to have to get used to buying a lot of shoes.

Depending on your stride, there may be shoes that via their design and build will help. Is the wear pattern on the outside of the heel and perhaps also the instep? That means you over-pronate. If it's on most of the entire outside heel and edge, you under-pronate (or supinate).
For the most part, only running shoes are really designed to correct for this type of stride but may be a place to start. Go to a speciality running shoe store and ask them to diagnose your stride and recommend a shoe.

Alternatively, it may be that you have poor posture and it's affecting your stride. Try to note if you slouch or don't have a straight back with head held level when you're walking -- making a conscious effort to do those things may help.
