New update on East vs. West

quote:

Hey everyone,

We've got some news for you regarding East vs. West that is going to change the future of the game and introduce the ability for fans to get intimately involved in the development. Since the project was born from modders we thought it was only right that we tell the community here first about the plans for it.
Development schedule permitting, East vs. West will be in beta come March and you will be able to contribute with what you want to get access to it.
This means that if you feel bad about playing the beta and not spending a cent, we will offer the alternative of paying what you want for it, and all money raised this way will go directly to the developers. Development of East vs. West is still being handled by BL Logic, so there are no changes there.
The scope of EvW is being reduced a little bit, you may have heard that some specific features are on hold while BL Logic focuses on the more integral parts of the game, and we agree with the devs that this is in the best interest of the game. As the game continues to improve, we may still decide to release it as a commercial product. Until then, though, a release date for EvW is not currently on our schedule. However, you'll all still be able to play the game in its beta form and support the devs with either your feedback here in the forums, monetarily, or both.

East vs. West is still shaping up to be a great Cold War game and we are looking forward to showing it to you in the coming months!

Best Regards
All of us here at Paradox Interactive

Unfortunately, yeah. When you're making a Cold War game and all you can talk about is the war part, you know it was going to be a dud. Poor Paradox.

Cultures thrive on their myths and legends...and snuggles!
This is pretty much saying "this isn't good enough to make an actual game but we'll let the community play it and give us money if they want and maybe one day it won't be rear end"

I think it makes sense though, they get something out of their investment, the diehard fans get the game they've been following and Paradox doesn't release an official commercial product that makes them look bad. I wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to do something like this with MM but Ubik wouldn't go along with it.

No, just that there may be a "normal" release after it's been on pay what you want beta for a bit.

It kind of makes sense for Paradox to announce HoI 4, assuming one of the new announcements turns out to be it. They've probably had a chunk taken out of them from the disaster that was Magna Mundi and now the impending disaster that is East vs West, so it would make sense to release another game that's historically made them a shitzillion dollars.

Paradox, this is suggested every time speculation begins and every time it turns out to not be the product. You know Dinosaur Universalis would be radically tubular, you know that merely creating a design document for such a game will spontaneously endow you all with wicked skateboarding abilities, so why aren't you getting in on this?

Yeah, this is probably for the best.

I tend to give Paradox poo poo for their decisions all the time (One of the reasons why I am no longer able to post under this name on their forums, I guess!), but there were NO good options for the handling of East vs. West at this point, and they picked the least damaging one.

You did well in not allowing this mess to be released officially.

cool but crude
Outside of clearly failing to accurately represent the period it is set in and the somewhat bizarre, but understandable idea to engage your goony fanbase, are there any other problems with EvW?

I mean, yes, designing your own battleship is not exactly what I would consider to be the most important part in a game that supposedly simulates the Cold War era, but if you see the game not as a political simulator and more like HoI in the late 20th century, wouldn't it actually be a good game?

If it's not representative of the Cold War, then based on what we've seen all that's left is a pay-to-play mod built on a fairly old, fairly notorious foundation. If you want to play a war game with the gameplay of Hearts of Iron 3, then you probably already own Hearts of Iron 3.

How do I keep a country in my alliance in Darkest Hour? I'm trying to keep the CSA allied with my in my KR France game. At first I thought it was because they had cores on Mexico, so I banned the Mexicans from my alliance, but they still won't stay in, even after I start acceptalling them into my alliance. I've read somewhere that your allies will leave if they have poor relations with other members of the alliance, but they've got good relations (+160 and up) with everybody else in the alliance as well (except for me now because you lose 100 relations every time they leave, but they were leaving when we had +200 relations).

What else could it be? Is my belligerency too high (60-something)? Another ally has 90 something belligerency, is that the problem?

I've never found alliances that useful, unless you have to keep Spain off your back for some reason. All your allies ever do is steal provinces you wanted to conquer.

HOI 2 in the late 20th century would probably be an okay game.

HOI 3 in the late 20th century would still carry all of the baggage of HOI 3 - too many provinces, combat system not very conducive to maneuver warfare, soulless research system, too timid war-waging AI and too many provinces
