Probably tempting fate with this, but no tickets yet. At least if I get any now I can better afford the fines, and I've grown out of doing permaban speeds.

Isn't that why they run that stupid tow hitch thing? I don't think they're allowed to qualify what your bumper is if they pull you over. They probably have to measure from the bottom of that black plate.

The previous year to mine's Formula Student team made a slight mis-calculation going from 13" to 10" rims, and so we inherited 4 Wilwood calipers with bits filed off. Turned out some ape had bled them last, stripped the bleed screws out of two of them and tried to seal them up again with instant gasket. It's a good thing the engine never ran right or the damned car would have killed somebody. We bought a pair of new calipers instead.

People in Florida take their tinting very seriously. I knew a guy who insisted that every car he drove had double 5% all-around and 50% on the front windscreen (whole thing, not a strip). Yes, he did hit things when backing out at night. All the loving time.

A couple of years ago here in NZ there was a major shitstorm in popular media about people backing over their own children in driveways. Fast forward half a decade and public pressure has forced every company selling new cars here to fit reversing cameras as standard on every suv-type vehicle, including Rav4, Murano and the like. And even now, "driveway deaths" are one of the land transport agency's bugbears that they periodically trot out when some dumb oval office runs over their lizard child with their lexus.

Reverse cameras were supposed to be phased in on all models by the 2014 model year here (not just SUVs - all cars), but for whatever reason, the law has been delayed. Then delayed again. Then a few more times. They seem to be standard equipment on mid to high end cars, but they're still not on most econoboxes.

STR is right. Reverse cameras IMO are generally stupid as hell as a requirement, but the vehicle I spend my days developing at work needs one, because otherwise you aren't going to see a goddamn thing. On the plus side, we'll be the only plane with a rearview camera, and no one will be able to sneak up behind you and shoot you down. Well, they'll certainly be able to shoot you down but you'll see them coming.

I used to think rear view cameras were dumb until I got used to driving cars with them. It's so much nicer just being able to look down and see exactly where the rear end end of your car is. Some cars even have little lines that move with the wheel so you know where you're going to end up. Super cool. Especially when you're backing unfamiliar cars into tight spaces. Unfamiliar cars where each wheel is worth more than all of my vehicles put together. Doubly so considering I never drive outside of work which leaves me with back up skills somewhat like that old lady who drags her Buick down a lamp post each time she reverses out of her driveway. If I was buying a car with a display on the dash (for Navi or whatever) I'd totally option in a rear view camera.

They really are awesome. I've never owned a car with one, but I've driven some cars with rear cameras and they're amazing. The Tesla was especially good. I'm pretty happy with the proliferation of reverse cameras, automatic parallel parkers, and other conveniences. I was just talking to a coworker today, he has a new Golf and can't figure out a loving thing under the hood. He's going to take it in for an oil change every 8-10k miles, have the tires changed at some point, and that's probably it. I was thinking how it kind of sucks that he can't do much to it, but really I can't fault people. I can understand what's under the hood of the Studebaker, which is good because I need to get under there pretty often--gently caress, I have to change the oil every 1,000 miles. I have that because I want to do those things, but it's awesome that you can buy most any car these days and they'll just go and go with minimal maintenance and they're safe and will park themselves. Now, the proliferation of loving "crossovers" and daytime running lights that don't turn on the rear lights? gently caress those. But in general, car technology is pretty exciting these days.

The display, the cameras, the electronics etc aren't cheap (yes I know you can buy them cheap as poo poo, you're not buying stuff to survive a 10 year warranty period) and the carcos don't want to push them unless they can tie them to nav/other ICE options, which are again more money. Cost concerns are delaying the implementation and while they're nice to have, it's hard to argue that they're safety critical in a way like seatbelt tensioners or airbags that justifies raising the floor on new car prices just yet, when that floor has been seeing constant upward pressure from new safety / CAFE regs already. I'm really hoping to see more of the fancy processing that lets the ICE generate a top-down view and your car like a straight up arcade game. Not just rear view but side as well.

I still don't like the fact that people rely on them solely when going backwards like I see so often. I rent a bunch of different cars over a typical year for work, and usually I just take whatever's available now, so I end up driving a lot of random stuff. Rear view cameras are really cool since I'm never perfectly sure of my size, so sometimes parallel parking can be hit or miss. Otherwise if I'm doing stuff like backing into potential traffic you can be sure I actually look around and cover my angles.

My coworkers are so freaking lazy when it comes to driving. They don't look behind themselves when they back up, the cut corners in the parking garage, and so on. I suspect rear cameras will only make them less aware of their surroundings. I understand how they can be helpful, but they shouldn't be a crutch or the only thing people look at when backing up.

Some random photos from my phone. Not the first time I've seen a Porsche badge on a non-Porsche. I doubt this has ever seen any dirt. The bumper is barely kept on, but wait... Weeks later it was gone. As a bonus, he needs to cut off the tail pipe a bit. Haven't seen the car as of late but being that it is still dark when I go home, it's not a surprise I miss it.

Between the rake of the rear window, the (factory) spoiler, the gigantic C pillar that makes a giant C pillar look tiny, and the previous owner's tint, I can't see a loving thing I try to back into the parking spaces at work whenever possible (partly because people haul serious rear end through the alley behind the store, and I'm in and out of the store nonstop anyway); any other time i'm backing out I walk around the car first and rely heavily on my mirrors. It's not ideal, but I've driven plenty of box trucks and windowless vans without killing anyone (yet).
