Anyone who uses netflix really needs a dns redirector that lets you pick the netflix region. It really expands your library.

Does anyone have information on how to go about setting these up for yourself? I have a VPS in both the US/UK and currently use them as VPNs (among other things) to access US Netflix/Hulu and BBC but it'd be nice to set up my own dns redirection so my Xbox could access these as well.

Edit: I know there are other services but I'd rather run my own if I can. My netflix account is already an American one though, just registered it to whatever address is attached to my VPS IP and used a virtual credit card to fudge my way through.

There's a bunch of different DNS services, I personally use UnblockUS. It's not free, but it's pretty reliable and at that price point, I'm too lazy to find something else.

I only had to create my account, set their DNS in my router's DHCP settings and now both my PS3 and TV are able to use US Netflix. (Or whatever other region I set it to, I had to change to UK to finish Breaking Bad.)

The only hiccup, I believe, is that some devices (namely the PS3) will require that you create a US Netflix account (as opposed to "roaming" with a Canadian account). This involves setting up the DNS service first, then registering for Netflix. Since it will think you're in America, you'll be asked for a US ZIP code when registering, but bypassing that is laughably easy.

Use the goon-run service http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3519315 for your VPN needs. There's no need for trickery of any kind, it's cheap and they're a small company so the customer service is always fantastic.

Set up a connection shortcut on your devices themselves rather than your router. You don't want all of your traffic going through a VPN, only when you want to bypass archaic region locks/distribution rights.

And Joe, a VPN won't bring back star trek to netflix but thanks for your post anyways.

I don't think this is true anymore, but it certainly was at one point. I'm definitely using my Canadian account currently and roaming US content on PS3.

Netflix UK has some Star Trek stuff so you could try that. I'm not sure if they have the original series or just TNG but it's worth checking out.

Interesting, I've never had an issue with getting US Netflix on my PS3 and I've been doing it since a few months after the Canadian Netflix launch. Could it be ISP related?

I use unotelly, but I will probably move to the goon service when my year is up.

One issue I've had is that I don't get "My List" across both regions, only the one I originally registered on. So when I'm in US Netflix I have my bookmarked list of stuff but if I swap over to the Canadian side using the region switcher on Unblock-us its just recommendations again. Sort of annoying but oh well.

On a different note, the base Cogeco business package was increased from 400GB usage to Unlimited. They've never enforced the limit anyway but it was nice that its official now. The speed is also getting bumped from 10 to 16mbps downstream and the upstream got increased to 2mbps as well. Not bad for $67 a month after taxes, more than enough for our needs. I did setup some QoS for the week night evenings but that's mainly to account for my use more than anyone else.

For me, the problem was a Canadian Netflix account did not used to roam US content. I had to create a US Netflix account with a virtual US credit card, and log in with that. At some point Entropay raised their fees, so I switched back to my Canadian Netflix account and it still works.

My PS3 always worked with US Netflix in Canada without a US Netflix account. The trick was to delete the Canadian Netflix app and then reinstall the Netflix app while on the DNS services were setup and it would install the US version rather than the Canadian version of the app.

I've got one canadian account and one app and the content changes based on whether or not I'm connected through the VPN. It's been like that for at least the year I've been using it.

I didn't even know there were region-based versions of the app??

I think part of this is that canadian accounts don't have the list feature yet? Or maybe that's just on Ps3. We just got the ability to use profiles a couple of months ago on our canadian account but I think that's been around for a long time on the US version? I remember when I first signed up for netflix people recommended using a US account for that reason. I didn't because I was dumb though.

I guess I might need to fix some VPN settings somewhere!

e: I've got lists on my Canadian account. That's how I found out we lost ST. I'd added every series and movie just to test it out and never did anything futher with it. One day I logged on to see all the crappy ST movies were all that was left in my list. That was pretty harsh.

Yeah they enabled My List on some Canadian accounts awhile ago but I don't know if it went service wide or not. The strange thing is that some people have My List on the American side but not the Canadian one and vice versa. Netflix is strange. As for ST it's definitely there on the US side though, I'm using unblock-us and watched an episode of TNG while on the treadmill last night :)

That certainly was the answer back in the day but now if you have 2-4 people in a home all streaming video for many hours a day and a few game consoles/Steam you can easy hit a few hundred gigs a month. Heck, the Xbox One when full will auto-delete/download content as you attempt to play them.

And now I see how truly awful Canadian internet is. We have a site in Mississauga that needs a new ISP.

They currently have some wireless provider giving us 6/4 or something which is great except it comes with 3% packet loss which is a joke.

So I called them out on it and they are blaming our equipment because there's no issue between our 'modem' and their site. OK sure, so despite being wired directly into the first router behind their modem and our lines being dead outside of some light http traffic and still showing huge loss, it must be on our end.

So looking for a new ISP for a business in that location I have found that we can get anything more than 6/1. Even our downtown Toronto office is stuck on 6/1.

What's even more amazing to me is bell wants to charge us $25/month for a loving Static IP. Thank god for TekkSavy or Start with their prices being more reasonable. ($4/$10 for the curious)

Check if your building is in the "fibrehood". "Downtown Toronto" is a pretty big place but if you can get served by Beanfield Metroconnect - you're golden.

Recently switched over for the office:
100/100, static ip, no bandwith limits for $180/mo. Ridiculous.

For home, has anyone else checked out Vmedia? I'm with them on the 50/10 DSL plan - they piggy back onto the Bell network. No complaints, no bandwith caps. $50 + dry loop fee. YMMV on this one as a lot of people had outages with the ice storm and Rogers is always a bag of dicks with the third party installs. I switched over from Teksavvy because of better pricing/no bandwith limits.

It gives major ISPs top marks, and the far better resellers "SD" ratings. I'm not really sure what the point of this thing is. I can watch HD video far easier on my "SPD" network than I ever could with Rogers anywhere.

So I discovered something interesting the other day. I did a speed test for the first time in a long time and noticed I was pulling down only about 4-7 mbps instead of my typical 20-ish that I get (25/2.9 Teksavvy). Mrs. Slidebites PC which is 1 room over from mine would do about 10/2.9. Since she never really downloads much I never really investigated or gave it much though with here.

Did trouble shooting and in the end deduced my wireless card wasn't pulling the signal as strong as it used to. I changed cases and reorganized my computer room so that undoubtedly had something to do with it. Considering I'm pulling it through 2 floors and several walls, not entirely surprising but disappointing. I ended up reconfiguring the room a bit and was able to get it closer to 18mbps so I was going to leave it there.

Fast forward to the other day. I was ordering a new HDD for my PS3 and power supply for my PC through NCIX and I noticed this on sale:

http://products.ncix.com/detail/d-link-dhp-w311av-powerline-av-500mbps-34-89066-1448.htm

A dlink powerline adapter that includes a wireless extender. Considering I already have a D-link powerline kit for my PS3 net access, on a whim (and after several drinks) I threw it in my order. Just received it today.

I just had to plug the extender in a power outlet in my office and point my wifi to the extender instead of the router. It automatically hooked up with the existing powerline adapter at the router

Long story short, I am pretty impressed with the difference. That's easily the fastest I've had with my wifi.

Mrs. Slidebites' now does 22/2.9

A+ WOULD BUY AGAIN
