This fic is amazing. Beyond amazing. The summary makes it seem like it'll be some everyday sick!Spain with mother hen!Romano… it isn't. It really isn't. Sunny Day in February takes Romano, and pushes his character so far he's hardly recognizable at the end. This fic can make you laugh, make you cry, and make you want to jump into the story and just give whichever character is having problems at the moment a hug. The character development is amazing. I've begun the process of rereading this 72 and counting chapter story, and I just keep noticing how much Lovino has changed, definitely for the better. And he is far from the only one. In my opinion, this is the Spamano fic to rule all other Spamano fics. Seriously, give it a shot.

Nani posted:

Warning: Rant Ahead.

Because I'd heard so much praise for Bottoms Up, and because I love Spamano so much, I finally caved and read it. The plot is a bit far-fetched, the chapters are unnecessarily long (the length is mostly due to line breaks, not lengthy descriptions, which annoys me greatly), the style of writing was not suited for this type of story, and the characterization was just... horrendous. I feel as though the author purposefully made everyone in this fanfic some kind of flanderization of their original character. Romano is just completely annoying and one-dimensional, Spain is vapid and his love for Romano is unrealistic (like in the chapter where Romano says all those terrible things about Spain and his people, for no reason, and Spain forgives him instantly. That doesn't happen.), Hungary has been reduced to nothing more than a yaoi fangirl, Belgium has somehow been made into one of the bad guys (that Spain also instantly forgives, AND EVEN BLAMES HIMSELF, despite knowing that she was using him! THAT. DOESN'T. HAPPEN.), and even poor Feliciano got turned into an annoying and stupid character, who even the "ever cheerful" Spain is a jerk to. (For no reason!) As for the smut, which was really the basis of the story, I believe that it's the only reason that most people continued to read it. The smut was well done (save for a few mishaps here and there), and as such, it kept the readers coming back for more. For me, those were the only good parts of the story.
All-in-all, this fanfic was really not worth the 80 chapter read. It's essentially a stereotypical Spamano fic, but drawn out for 80 chapters.

Ice Queen 128 posted:

Quite Lovely for a Smut Fic

This story... where do I even begin. Well, first of all it's RATHER LONG, almost 500,000 words, but don't be TOO intimidated, it honestly doesn't feel like all of that.
First off, I have to say this... THIS FIC IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. Not even remotely. If you can handle M-rated smut, albeit well-written smut in my opinion, then proceed on. It's not really simply written porn, there's a whole TON of meaning incorporated into it.
I have to disagree with one of the reviews on this. I found the characterizations quite unique while still somehow being very recognizable as those characters. And the character development is wonderful, it's overall not as serious or angsty as other fics out there but there's definitely moments of those as Lovino goes around Europe discovering more about Antonio's past. Even so, the tone overall is more lighthearted and it's beautiful and lovely to see the Antonio/Spain's and Lovino/Romano's relationship through each other's eyes. It's great to see the change in Lovi throughout the fic as he becomes more comfortable with himself and showing his actual self and being more open about sharing his feelings and thoughts. Who knew he could be such a sweetie? And his point of view is one of the most enjoyable I've yet to read. So unintentionally funny and endearing, you see why so many characters get around to adoring him. This is definitely not quite like other Spain/Romano fics I've read, or if it is it's the first one of that kind I've read and definitely the best. If you don't support the pairing, I can see why you may not enjoy it but then again you probably wouldn't be reading this fic.
There's a prequel story called "This Dance" and an in-progress sequel story called "And Three Makes Five", all three make for a great trilogy but it's not necessary to read all of them to follow the story.
Thanks, Tropers!

Really both, but more the latter, from how I'm reading it. If you actually look at the way a lot of fanfic is set out, most of it will be one or two lines, double line break, a line of dialogue, double line break, another line, and so on. It's set out how you'd expect a chatlog to be written, with someone hitting Return after every line. The troper there's complaining that the writer doesn't actually know how to format a story worth a drat, with the result that it's bloated due to line breaks, rather than content.

Hey, guys! Let's check out the WMG page for 1984, because CLEARLY what the most famous dystopian novel of all time needs is a bunch of lonely pedophile dweebs feverishly dreaming up insane theories about it!

1984 is a sequel to Jack London's The Iron Heel, and the rebels of that book eventually won and became the Party posted:

London's rebel Socialists and Orwell's Party both call each other "comrade," hate capitalists, are masters of disguise and undercover work, are adept at brainwashing (as seen by the incident in The Iron Heel involving young Wilkins), value abstaining from all sexual relationships so as not to distract one from his or her devotion to the cause (the Red Virgin Anna Royalston and male rebels who refuse to marry are honored and praised just like the Comrade Ogilvy Winston invents), and encourage family members to turn against each other in support of the cause (one of London's rebels is excommunicated for protecting his traitor son, and Party children are turned into spies against their parents). "The Brotherhood of Man" that (eventually) defeated the Iron Heel is either the Party, or the hegemony that succeeded the Party.
:tvtropes: "There are a lot of similarities between two different groups in two different groups, CLEARLY they're the same canon!"

Room 101 contains a boggart posted:

It's your worst fear, after all? So if Winston had been a wizard, and he'd had access to his wand, then all he'd have to do would be to say "Riddikulus" and the rats would turn into Alvin and the Chipmunks or something.
"A Thing Happens in one novel kinda like another novel. Clearly a connection."

Oh, do not forget the inevitable Doctor Who theory

The Doctor will come in his TARDIS and save the day posted:

1. It seems that in order for anything to change would take outside interference. 2. I really really want it to be true!

because of course

ALIENS.jpg

The Party WILL fall. Via Aliens posted:

Now, it's quite a stretch, but this is how I think it'll all go down:

The Party want to rule forever.
If Eastasia or Eurasia win and beat back the surviving state, things won't change much and there'll never be another state.
Eventually, assuming humanity doesn't nuke itself into oblivion, aliens will show up. Why? Well, the Party, whichever state it's from, is apparently unstoppable, i.e. there will never be a successful rebellion. This also means that, with the war apparently being perpetual, someone WILL lose eventually, assuming it's not just Oceania screwing with everyone. In that case, there is already only one party. Anyway, with no threat, life will go on as it always has... until something from far away in the galaxy shows up, albeit in a very advanced stage of the Party's collective life. What happens then is up to debate. Aliens might conquer, since the Party, as a whole, would never progress (science is obliterated) and would be kind of military pushovers who keep lying and doublethinking to themselves. They might help the common man for whatever reason. Who knows? But if the Party keeps stamping on a face "forever", they'd better be prepared for the odds of something like this happening.
Or maybe this will be the successful rebellion
The aliens and rebels work together
The party loses the war
The Party is forced into Room 101 until they die.

Inevitable incest theories are go

The prostitute Winston sleeps with is his mom posted:

Think about it. She's about the age his mother would have been, and it's never directly said what happened to her. Maybe at some point, rather than join the Party, she became a prole.

Julia is Winston's sister posted:

Winston isn't sure of his exact age, right? And they both have dark hair...

Hence why the Party cracked down on them, it wans't because they were having sex for pleasure (seriously, how can sex for pleasure be a threat to the power hunger of the Party? It's like saying playing with an old, harmless toy is a threat to your mom, or Tv Tropes is a threat to wikipedia), it was because of the outright Squick that even the Party and Big Brother himself can't handle.....
Winston's hair is, "very fair."
Sex leads to attachments, which lead to people's loyalties being outside party needs. That is why they hate it. Almost every totalitarian system in history has despised sex, from Phillip and Isabella to Stalin.
^this one is particularly funny because it's literally just, "they're the same age AND THEY HAVE DARK HAIR OH GOD NO ONE HAS DARK HAIR WITHOUT BEING SECRET-INCEST FUCKERS RIGHT?!?!?"

East Asia is ruled by Anonymous posted:

The name of their ideology is translated as "Obliteration of the Self", right?

So, Death worship is actually Desu Worship? Eastasia is better, it has memes and anonymity hence Rule 34 hence way more better than anti-sexual Ingsoc, better move to Eastasia.... *unpersoned by Thought Policemen*
According to Orwell himself, it's supposed to be a totalitarian deformation of Buddhist and Taoist teachings. Might be a Take That on Mao's instrumentalization (and subsequently violent deformation) of Confucianism in his own ideology.

Now if you wanna be generous you can say that, oh, 1/2 (or so) of these were joke theories, but a) that assumes tropers know anything about humor, and b) that still leaves another 1/2 which is completely serious.

Alpacalips Now
Oct 4, 2013
It's sad that instead of discussing what 1984 says about surveillance and loss of privacy, the erosion of democracy, propaganda, or any other relevant questions it raises, tropers spew this boring, harebrained bullshit about aliens and incest. It wouldn't be so bad if they were 13 and trying to amuse themselves while reading a book for school, but I bet most of them are old enough to know better. How can someone who has even a modicum of interest in literature miss the point this much? Even in middle school, our English teachers drilled into our heads that we weren't supposed to just write plot summaries and character descriptions, but say something about it. When it isn't being creepy, TV Tropes is as dull as a bunch of confusingly-organized book reports.

I think I've figured it out. Somewhere in the world there IS a wizard troper who got placed into Room 101. They got shown their absolute worst fear, which in their case was, of course, intelligent reading of good books. So they pulled out their wand and shouted, 'Riddikkulus!', the fearsome sight turned into something so utterly silly that it could never be taken seriously again...

... and thus was created TVTropes.org.

Well, it's definitely not because both novels are heavily influenced and inspired by real life events and groups, people in 1984 using the Russian word for friend/ally MUST have been because of it's use in an earlier novel that was written during an early anti-establishment revolution in Russia, not because later groups of communists and totalitarian pseudo-communists also used that word. Also all the other things mentioned are stuff that real hardcore leftist groups and revolutionaries have done as a matter of course.

Goblin babies did nothing wrong.

I don't understand how Tropers fail at understanding 1984 so badly. Its not a subtle book, it explicitly states everything its trying to say.

Of the bits of the WMG page that aren't stupid crossover garbage, half is people bringing up stuff that is explicitly stated in the book like its some great insight ("It might not actually be 1984 guize! The party might be the one firing the rockets! Big Brother might not exist!"). The other half is people sperging about things that aren't explicitly brought up in the book but don't matter (It doesn't actually matter whether or not the three Superstates are real and who is actually allied with who, the whole point is that nobody knows because history and memory are at the whim of the Party).

I don't know why I continue to be surprised by Tropers missing the point of books so badly, but I am.

Oh yeah, because that was what Orwell really wanted to warn us about, realpolitik. Thanks for the amazing analysis.

quote:

Big Brother Is Employing You: Winston works for the Party.
Thanks for nothing, captain obvious.

quote:

Crapsack World: Living in the world of 1984 is a Fate Worse than Death even worse than living in a Cosmic Horror Story. At least in a Cosmic Horror Story you lived just like a Prole with privacy and freedom because the gods don't care about your thought-crimes (unless, of course, your curious mind actively seek them out with punishments galore).
They can't even talk about dystopias without bringing in the Lovecraft comparisons.

quote:

Disproportionate Retribution: The hell Winston Smith is put through is astonishing, considering that his rebellious acts — keeping a diary, having an affair and enjoying it — are so trivial and furtive that he would pose no threat to the Party at all if he were only left alone. Very likely he would not agitate, or publish samizdat tracts, or even whisper thoughtcrime to his acquaintances. He would just go on and on, writing lies for the Ministry of Truth and meeting up with Julia and wondering wistfully if there is a Brotherhood, until his natural death. But for the Party, mere obedience is not enough.
Tropers Missing the Point of Everything: Episode 1,204,141,043,814

quote:

False Flag Operation: It is heavily implied that Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia are basically ruled by the same ideology, and are bombing each other/themselves to create a Pretext for War and totalitarianism, and that the Party is using the Brotherhood to bait dissidents for capture.
It's flat-out stated a million times, you dumbasses.

quote:

Not So Different: The rival countries. Oceania may be bad, but the implication is that the two other superstates, Eurasia and Eastasia, are almost exactly identical to it. The three states are always at war with each other, with nobody ever winning. If you live in one of the areas the three states are always fighting over, you are a slave in both body and mind to whoever has power over the area at the current time.

It is heavily implied that an unspoken gentleman's agreement exists between the three states that they will never make a serious effort to destroy the others - this is the reason no state ever uses mass conscription or WMDs - because the war is part of the Evil Plan for the three of them to keep the standard of living down and mobilize the hatred of the population. Goldstein's book even mentions that Oceania could probably conquer all of Europe up to the Polish frontier, or that Eastasia could likely seize Australia, but that neither state does so for fear of upsetting the Balance of Power.

In fact, the actual state of the world is so poorly known that (a) the idea that Oceania dominates the entire world, and the existence of the other states is simply a fiction to justify a war with which to keep people's expectations of a better life crushed, and (b) the idea that Oceania is little more than a Banana Republic consisting of only Airstrip One, and is applying propaganda to make its position on the world stage sound grander than it really is, are both equally valid interpretations of what might really be going on. The "Three states making only token attacks on each other" is just one other possibility which may or may not be the truth.
More saying stuff that was outright said was only "implied"!

I recall TvTropes having a page about a novel where a teenage babysitter gets captured by the sadistic kids she's supposed to watch for a week, and is then kept tied up and repeatedly raped in various bondage poses. The book apparently ends with her dying of suffocation, and the kids dump her body and get off free.

So, this is already perfect fuel for the average troper. But they also felt the need to recommend a fanfic where the girl escapes and the boys get their comeuppance. I'm trying to recall the name of the page, but it was rather skeevy from what I remember.

EDIT.

I remembered. Oh god, why did I remember? Let's Go Play at the Adams

Let's Go Play at the Adams posted:

"A novel of lingering horror."

That describes it aptly. Barbara, a 20-year-old babysitter to a couple of preteens, wakes up to find herself tightly tied to a bed and gagged. The kids are in charge now, and with a couple of teenagers from the neighborhood visiting, they have no intent of letting Barbara loose. Thus begins Barbara's never-ending days and nights of torment.

The kids make sure she is literally always restrained in some way. One hand free to eat, that's it. Just enough free to use the bathroom, and that's it. She is always retied, often in different ways for the kids' own amusement. Things go downhill, though, when the teens of the group decide to do other things to her for their own amusement. Yes, those kinds of other things...

The book finally ends with... Barbara's death, and the kids successfully getting away with it.

Yes, this is a real novel. Some reviews on Amazon.com are from people who say that they've thrown the book away in disgust or even destroyed it after having read it, and one person admitted to burning it! Another reader praised the book for its realistic portrayal of helplessness, and showing how one's thoughts would actually wander and what they'd wander to, what one would think and feel, when they're tied up and perpetually helpless. There's a tremendous amount of description in this story, and we get inside the heads of not only Barbara, but each of her captors, each of whom is getting something different out of the situation, each of whom has a different view of it, and all of whom, over time, begin to care less and less about Barbara.

The author died shortly after the novel was published. There's some speculation as to whether or not this is essentially one massive Author Appeal-fest, but most will tell you, the book is very well-written, and definitely gets under your skin. One review here attests to that.

The book attracted the attention of TV editor, Barry Schneebeli, who wrote a sequel called Game's End. Due to copyright laws, it was never actually published, but is available online at his website, and you can find a review here). It begins with the what-if premise of Barbara being saved at the last minute, and the kids' activities exposed as a result, and explores the resulting media frenzy and criminal trials, as well as Barbara's physical and emotional recovery from her ordeal. Had Schneebeli's project gone to press, it might have brought the original book out of obscurity.

Bound and Gagged - Galore. From beginning to end. Many, many different ways.

Died Standing Up - Perhaps the only time this trope has had no connection to Badassery. Barbara, due to how she is tied at the end.

quote:

Fatal Flaw: Barbara manages to get the upperhand and fight off her captors and nearly forces them to free her...all while still bound and gagged, but relents at the last second because she can't bear to hurt Cindy any more than she already is

Rape as Drama
Rape Is Love - John views raping Barbara as proving to her that he loves her

Later on, due to Stockholm Syndrome setting in, Barbara begins to return his affections

Later, the page talks about a "Fix Fic" (Trope Speak for a fanfic that they think improves on the original or deals with things they didn't like) called Game's End. Basically, this was an unofficial sequel where the girl is saved at the end, and the boys get punished. Of course, it also includes rape, because reasons.

Humiliation Conga - John; this culminates in Prison Rape and later suicide.

Pointing out that Tropeers catastrophically miss the point of 1984 is almost cheating, since almost everyone does that.
