I have a theory that how much you like Sunny depends on whether you've met people who remind you of the Gang.

A lot of my friends don't like the show, but I love it. In my life, I have known: A frat bro who was kind of shallow but had this easy-going charm that made him likable -- until you got to know him & saw how much of a creepy date rapist & manipulator of women he was; A guy in his 30s who still liked all the same dumb poo poo he liked at 12 (wrestling, fireworks, BMX, stupid action movies) and acted like a dumb 12yo every time he enjoyed it; a girl who seemed sort of lonely, pathetic and in need of a friend -- until you saw that she was so negative, judgmental and competitive that you got why no one came near her. Do any of those personalities sound familiar? Not everyone meets people like that in their lives, though, so maybe people like the Gang seem too impossible to exist for them.

I haven't really given this theory any serious consideration so take it with a grain of salt.

It would make sense why I like the league a bit more then Always Sunny. My group of friends are just like them and we poo poo all over each other. Sadly I relate with Andre :smith:. But for Always Sunny I have never met anyone like them that I can remember and I think this show is awesome. So YMMV on this theory.

Subjectivity is an issue with every show but It's Always Sunny seems like it has an especially broad scope of humor. It feels like everybody unanimously agrees that it's funny but has completely differing opinions about which episodes/seasons are the best and which are the weakest. I think people just find different elements of the show especially funny. You guys have both cited Mac and Dennis Buy a Timeshare as one of the weaker episodes but I've been watching it repeatedly and think it's one of my favorites of the entire show.

timp posted:

This is exactly what I was thinking, and well put. For instance, I generally notice myself laughing more at the calm moments, the delivery of a certain line, little glances between characters, etc, and I notice others laugh more at the physical comedy and over-the-top plot twists. There's a few things that most people seem to find funny universally, and a (small) few that nobody thinks is funny, and a whole lot of stuff in the middle that's hit or miss for different reasons with different people. I was thinking there were two types of Sunny fans, but that makes it seem divisive, and I don't think it's quite accurate..."broad" as you said puts it better.

Sartana had a great point earlier in the thread that I elaborated on a bit. This theory is more about why some people love one episode that others hate and vice versa, but it also supports a theory that this show uses a lot of different types of humor, hence a wide and varied fan base. In my opinion, people who don't like Sunny either haven't seen the right episode for them yet, or they find it offensive.

I totally agree with you. The only other reason I've ever heard for someone not liking the show was that "the characters' voices are annoying" or "they just yell all the time."

This is what originally turned me off the show and I hated Charlie Day with a passion. Once I finally gave it a chance it became one of it not my favorite show ever and it's probably the only show I'll always watch if it's on even if I've seen the episode eight times. I think each of the characters (except Dee) is insanely hilarious and even the weaker episodes still make me laugh. I also like it because as long as they can get past the yelling everyone I know ends up liking the show even if they have wildly different opinions on what is and isn't funny.

edit: I've seen all the episodes plenty of times and I definitely think Dee is funny especially compared to most women on television. I should've phrased what I said differently; I think they are all funny but that Mac, Charlie and Dennis are continually some of if not the funniest people on TV.

The one where Charlie and Dee switch lives for a night might change your opinion about this. I think it's Dennis Reynolds: An Erotic Life. Also the one where Dee goes shopping with the Waitress and tries to steal shoes. Kaitlin Olsen is one of the stronger comedians on the show, both for playing against the others and when she gets to go crazy on her own.

It's incwedibwe easy to suck my own dick.

I think new people tend to tune out the yelling at first, which is a shame because usually each character is yelling something legitimately funny. If a viewer just thinks "Uh-oh, overlapping input. Better stop listening!" they'll miss a lot.

Also Dee is hilarious.

I actually really disliked the show at first for this exact reason. My friends would put an episode on and I'd think "oh great, it's that show where everyone yells over each other all the time." However once I was forced to watch a handful of episodes I realized how hilarious it was and became a convert. It's probably my favorite show at this point. I think getting to know the characters really helps with the humor-- it can be a bit off-putting initially.

Yeah, not sure what to say with regards to Dee not being anything but amazing. You can see the difference in quality when they start writing her properly, rather than just shoe horning the character in (the first season). Kaitlin Olson is ridiculously good at playing a character that's every bit on the level with the guys, rather than just being sidelined for being a girl.

It never really dips, but there are some pretty lackluster episodes and at least a few outright bad episodes that are all clustered in two or three of the middle seasons. The two most recent seasons (the last one on Netflix and the one that's waiting to go up) were both really good.

The episodes that have bad episodes in them also have great episodes, though. Like the one in my avatar.

e: I'd say the characters become less rounded and more caricature-like, but they're still consistent in their characterization with earlier seasons and the show doesn't suffer for it in the same way that it's the death of other shows. The shorter seasons might help; they just hit 100 episodes in either the most recent season or the season before it.
