Honestly I'm not sure if I would enjoy a Pixar world much. I don't think it would jive well with the worst-kind-of-batshit direction Kingdom Hearts's story went after the first game, the series is basically Nomura's Disney snuff porn fanfiction at this point.

The game's is available for download on iOS/Android but without localization. There are already English guides out for non-Japanese players. I think the Android version has some region locking issues which may prevent you from playing it.

There was a reddit AMA not too long ago where Haley Joel Osment was asked if he understood Kingdom Heart's story:

quote:

The Kingdom Hearts plot is really hard to follow, but seeing as you’ve provided your voice for most of the games, can you understand most of it? Do you tend to play the games yourself?

I will never forget walking in for the first session of KH2 and seeing that the producers had set up a bulletin board with a flow chart explaining the sequence of events in different universes and watching them almost struggle to sort it out. It wasn't that they weren't knowledgeable, they just were still unraveling the story for themselves and dealing with the huge amount of information Nomura-San puts out. That was when I personally realized how video games had reached the level of art.

http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1vdrbr/hey_reddit_its_me_haley_joel_osment_here_to/

I guess there is some method to the madness or the English localization team mess with their voice actors for fun.

That was only the first game actually. They got rid of the "Disney worlds destroyed by Heartless" stuff at the end of the first game and every one since has had the Disney worlds just being random Disney worlds where you go and do the plots completely straightfaced. Basically all they do these days is "here is the plot of the Disney movie told verbatum except Sora is standing off to the side and occasionally punches a guy in the face" until it is time for fanfiction bosses to show up and spout insane psuedophilosphy at each other.

Mind you, that doesn't make it an iota less stupid. Just stupid in a goofy anime way instead of a depressing snuff fanfiction way.

I remember popping a summon whenever it was his turn and letting a summon eat his attack since he just desummons them anyway. It's always good to have a dedicated healer in those sorts of fights too, making sure you've got hastega and shell/protect up on everyone.

It's basically the closest you'll get to a story-driven JRPG on the 360 that isn't Final Fantasy or awful. The only thing to keep in mind is that the combat system is action-based and not turn-based

So FFXIII-2 will be $9 with PS+ discount. I played most of the way through FFXIII but got bored and dropped the game before finishing. Probably got something like 30 hours into the game.

I heard from several people that FFXIII-2 was an improvement though. At $9 should I take the plunge and get it, or is it still a piece of turd like FFXIII was?

FFXIII-2 is worse than FFXIII in every way except that it is less linear. The story is stupid as hell, the combat system is worse, the graphics are worse, the loading times are atrocious... basically everything about it, except the fact that you have a bit more choice in where to go and some dialogue options, is worse.

These posts are funny because Tales of Vesperia is the only tales game I've tried (didn't really like it, felt to story was too disjointed and I didn't really care about the characters) and DQ8 is the only Dragon Quest game I've played. Not sure why I didn't get into DQ8, I might check it out again.

Depends on what you didn't like about 13. If it was the battle system, well you're poo poo out of luck and should probably just stay away from the entire 13 series. If it was the story and characters, rest assured that they're still terrible (but a different kind of terrible). On the other hand, if you got to Gran Pulse and asked why the entire game wasn't open like that, then yeah, 13-2 might do some good for you. It's much more non-linear with big open places to explore, but that's about all it really "fixes" from 13.

I remember there being a point where the game asks you to go and find some mcguffin in a bunch of different areas in the game, gives you very little direction, and is basically like "welp you figure it out" and lets you go on your way. So if anything, even the non-linearity has a bad side, because I sure as poo poo love me some poorly thought out long rear end fetch quests!

That's when I stopped playing.

Lysandus posted:

Basically FFXIII was very very structured. As a result the game knew exactly (or roughly) how powerful you were for each encounter and designed them around the idea. It annoyed a lot of people but the combat system was designed around the idea you couldn't really overlevel. This had problems but it meant that fights were generally designed around the idea that you were using different abilities and staggering enemies and switching Paradigms, or at least the boss fights were.

FFXIII-2 does away with that and goes the opposite direction. It is in fact entirely too easy to overlevel in the game and there's no real solid sense of scale since the game is nonlinear. That means that if you go even a little out of your way you end up so overleveled that you don't even have to bother switching Paradigms. So basically it is FFXIII's combat system but way easier and more boring. They made some good changes (you can swap to another character when you die) but the rest of the game is so badly balanced that you can't even really appreciate the changes because you'll effortlessly wreck everything and get good rankings for it.

They expanded the combat system to allow for new variations on paradigms ("cross" which focuses on one enemy and "wide" which goes for AoE stuff) and you get a monster ally since you only have two permanent party members. Said monster allies range from "hilariously OP to the point of trivializing the area" to "about as good as Serah or Noel at the job", and between that and a few Crystarium tweaks, it's very very easy to outpace the difficulty curve and make the rest of the game a cakewalk.

I will say that one of the changes I did greatly appreciate was being able to change who you control on the fly and making it so if that person dies, it's no longer a game over.
