..oh. I wish I wasn't so impatient then. Oh well, good to know if it happens again, thanks.

What is everyone's favorite main-line combat frigate? I need something to pad out my fleet with but also doesn't die to a single Hound. I've been trying out the Kadur Camel, which seems to get the job done alright without being too slow.

It's a tie between SF's Imaginos (http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=4018.0) - the damaging teleport special is so hilariously fun, especially against drones and fighters. Too bad the Imaginos is absurdly expensive to use and constantly requires servicing.

The other one is the Shamash (I think that's what it's called, from the Shadowyards mod: http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=4018.0). Phase frigate, with a built in energy weapon and mines. I put two ion cannons on it and rear end rape bigger ships. No seriously - with a bit of skill this thing easily takes on even a medusa. Once you're behind them and you hit their engines, game over.

Honourary mention should go to the foxhound frigate - it's like a hound but with better stats and a TON of drones. Give it a front shield emitter (it's flux/damage ratio for the shield is very efficient, probably a bug honestly), extended shields and some low flux weapons. It is a fantastic support frigate for destroyers and cruisers, makes mince meat of ships without PD weapons, with a shield it can last a while in combat and is fast enough to capture strategic targets. It eats weaker ships like lashers and hounds for breakfast.

Double post I know, but your sprite work is amazing and your ships are extremely well balanced to the vanilla ships. I would go so far as to say your mod is the best one so far I've seen in terms of new ships and gear.

Agreed. Blackrock's aesthetics are just great.

Now if only there was a capital-class Nevermore. I want a supersized AM Lance to take out destroyers in a single hit. :getin:

I wish the AI was better at using BRDY ships though. In my experience they tend to overload quite often because the AI is so stingy with venting, even if they're in a Scarab sitting at 500 armor and full hull.

Thanks for all the frigate suggestions, I'll try them out.

Been a while, but there's a big upcoming patch-notes update. The next build looks to be eliminating more of the more binary elements, so you can field ships even at zero readiness, but they'll be a huge liability. Also an Easy starting point that gives you a small fleet to begin with, rather than making you work your way up to that.

New update!

Main features:

Adjustments to combat readiness (more ship longevity and more choices, details below)
Four new ships!
Campaign help – dialogs that explain various game mechanics – how to split cargo stacks, how CR works, etc
Choice of starting difficulty – Easy and Normal. “Easy” gives you a choice of better starting ships and a Mule combat freighter, does not affect the rest of the campaign
Updated to use Java 7 and the latest version of LWJGL (2.9.2). Improved performance, OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) is no longer supported
Reduced memory usage (mostly affects larger mods)
Lots and lots of assorted bugfixes/improvements etc

I've been having a lot of fun with some of the ships introduced in the new patch. The cerberus is the ultimate pursuit ship but kinda garbage otherwise I've found, although it is hilarious to jam to the gills with bombs and hit the burn drive. Once you are at max speed start spamming your bombs and you create a solid wall of ultra fast death.

The monitor is the real star of the show though, it moves at a decent clip, especially with engine mods and is basically invincible. It may not have the stopping power to handle anything on its own but it makes the perfect escort, making strike craft basically a non issue with its two flak cannons and fortress shield plus two handy universal slots to fill in whatever damage type you need on demand.
I like to roll with an ion cannon and sabots for maximum dickery and set it to escort something with a big gun and a vulnerability to point defence. Haven't tried out the new carrier yet as I want to start a more fleet focused character build to get the most out of it.

Oh wow this was a good moment to check how things are going. Once mods are updated, what's the current must have (I assume BRDY at least)? Is Uumoz sector still improving? Last time I checked it only took a few saves to lock up the game and ruin the save.

Uumoz and Exerelin require you to up the game's ram usage and make the game use 64bit java if possible. There are details on how to do this in the Exerelin thread in the official mod forum.

No, they both pretty fundamentally change the gake in incompatible ways.

Personally I prefer Exerelin since that gives you more of a purpose., Uomoz gives you crafting and the ability to make your own customized faction but does not let you affect the universe in the same way as Exerelin. On the other hand Exerelin lets you play as a specific faction and conquer other factions territory, you now days get some control over your faction like the ability to direct AI fleets and influence diplomatic relations. One benefit of Exerelin is also that you can simply use more factions than what is in Uomoz which gives more variety. A mix of the two mods would be cool as currently that is probably what I would want in the finished game.

This game is amazing. I was a little worried since I've been burned by thinking games that look like this would be better than they were, but this just completely exceeded my expectations in every way and evaporated 3 hours of my life on a work night. I was a little concerned when I read there were only two systems but I quickly picked up the Exerelin mod and that alleviated that almost completely. The "base-capturing" seems sort of arcane and I'm still figuring that out but I've basically made it my goal so far to wipe the Sindarian Diktat.

I love the feel of the ships in this game too. I bought my first capital ship and have been cruising around grinding/obliterating fleets and decided it was time to join the big leagues. Got an Onslaught-class Battleship and...holy poo poo, it's got a signature weapon built-in?! That's loving rad. The ships in this game have so much personality thanks to the varied mechanics of the game, I just can't say enough good things about it.

That said it does worry me that the developer might burn out or something. It doesn't seem to update particularly often so hopefully I'm wrong. I really hope trading and a more robust faction-warfare gets added soon. It surprises me that Starsector hasn't gained more traction, too, since I know there are a ton of EV:Nova fanatics out there and this certainly scratches that itch for me. I can see this game entertaining me for a long, long while.

The station capturing is pretty mechanically straightforward, it just requires supplies and marines, both in enormous amounts. While not every ship has as much personality, there's one for almost every niche or role you might want.

The game was just updated a few days ago, the dev just takes his time with the updates, which are generally pretty substantial.

Honestly the fact that the dev seems to take a while to update is the worst of my gripes, and that's basically nothing considering the quality of the patches and of the game in general. It's fantastic. I'm now realizing that it might be optimal to fly my fleet over my current logistical capacity with sub-par CR so I can shore up my weakness to heavy fighters with fighters of my own, and I've never played a game where I got to make choices like that. Just a drat fun game, and it's only in alpha(!!).

RE: station capturing, from my understanding of it, I thought you just needed the supertanker and the troop transport ship? That's what I had at the beginning of the game to capture my first station, anyway.

He's super-cautious. He seems afraid if that he releases an alpha build with bugs in, there'll be a huge backlash and the game will lose players. The sad thing is that he might be right - aside from art, the game is entirely a one-man project, far from completion, and you just know that a lot of people will freak out if an update isn't entirely stable.
