I'm kind of a sucker for "Creator gets trapped in their own work" stories, but this one just didn't do anything for me. Instead of subverting cliches it seemed to be embracing them and then complaining afterwards. And it didn't help that every character seemed like a total moron.

I read until partway through chapter 5 then abandoned it. Maybe it found it's feet after that point, but I really got nothing out of those first 4 chapters. I wasn't compelled by the drama, wasn't intrigued by the mystery, and wasn't entertained by the comedy.

Yes characters call out lovely plot developments/fanservice... but they didn't seem to have anything insightful to say about it, and calling a lovely plot development lovely just didn't improve things for me.

The characters are lovely because the "creator" himself is untalented. That's kinda the whole point. But here's the thing about self-aware plots like these: They don't try to present this in an interesting way. At least try to subvert/defy/play with the tropes.

Anyone has read Lasboss-X-Hero?

Is a pretty entertaining story about a mangaka who ends trapped on his own manga and now thinks than killing the main heroine is the only way to finish the story and return to the real world. Lots of meta moments, the characters calling out the lovely plot developments/fanservice and a nice art (but as the most recent chapter there's two :nws: panels)

Very recomendable.

Why are you recommending a series in which the heroine gets tentacle raped (oh, I'm sorry, "molested") in the second chapter for laughs? Seriously, what the gently caress?

You're so gonna hate subsequent chapters then, I recommended it because the constant struggle of the author to made the manga interesting made me laugh, I think is interesting how the characters evolve on par with the plot (just compare how's Haru on the first chapter to the most recent). I found the use of of 'sexual' scenes for laughs like a playful (and sel aware) jab on the real (:v) author's part about the shonen genre.
Certainly isn't a genre changing manga but it is a different enough premise for me to be interested.

All of a sudden, Ueno is like my favorite character in this manga now. It's really fun just seeing a really really mean girl. She's just mean and bitchy as gently caress and has the balls to call bullshit, and I respect that, even if she's not a pleasant character. It's awesome. Manga needs more antagonists like her.

I don't think it's much that she's absolutely mean, or rather it's not solely because of that, but just that she didn't realize how much he had changed. She sees how he is now, she sees the way that he pretty much blew her off in favor of sticking up for Nishimiya, and she's jealous as gently caress. So now she's going to ratchet up the bitch attitude because she's so desperate for him to pay attention to her over Nishimiya even if it's by making him hate her... and probably she thinks it'll go along the lines of "oh they hate each other but really they looooove each other" too.

Yeah, Ueno came less as a bitch and more like having an emotional breakdown. Like she couldn't process the fact than Shouya weren't a bully anymore and than suddenly, the deaf girl is her rival for Shouya's attention. She's definitly doing anything to keep Shouya for her.
On the other hand, Shouko getting worried/jealous over Shouya is adorable. :3:

I've liked the way that his interaction with people is represented by the 'X' on their faces. It's visually striking and made a big impact his chapter when we see him put the X back on someone for the first time.

My biggest issue with Koe no Katachi is that Nishimiya comes off as super passive/"nice" to an extent where it makes her character seem two-dimensional. Is "infantilizing" the term for minority characters being handled with kid gloves like this? Presenting someone handicapped in a positive way (or hell, presenting them at all) is obviously way better than ignoring them or presenting them in a negative manner, but ideally they would be treated as actual individuals with the same positive and negative aspects as anyone else.

Something like Koe no Katachi is still much better than nothing at all, though.

I've had this concern as well. It's a common problem in representations of disabled characters, and it doesn't help that we never get to see her internal thought processes. That said, rather than a positive thing, it seems like it might be the result of her own issues. Eagerness to please, having trouble speaking up for herself--I've been there, too. And we've seen her lose that doormat demeanor now and then. I hope that we get to see more and more of her recognizing and voicing her own needs.

Yeah it kind of goes back to the beginning where Shouya saw her cleaning his desk or the fight that led to her transferring out. She probably thinks a lot of the bullying and other problems she's had to deal with are her fault. If she's being picked on then it must be something she's done or she's just not trying hard enough to get people to like her so if she shows them how nice she is maybe they'll see she's an alright person. As a closer example, look at Helldump and how many people would try to "roll with the punches" because they thought if they showed it was fine people would come around; never happened though and in fact all it did was cause the person in question to get mocked even more and the same deal happened with her. The more she tried to roll with things the worse Shouya and the others got.

There's also the bit where she says it makes her happy to feel needed. So presumably because she's grown up enduring a lot of poo poo she probably saw herself as useless and a burden so Shouya comes back to her, spills his guts about how miserable he is, and she realizes that he's obviously someone who's in a lot of pain so she finally has a chance to be needed to try and help him get through what's eating him up. They're both basically complete opposites and are helping one another get over their childhoods. Through Shouko he's slowly coming to terms with what he did and overall becoming a better, more caring person while through Shouya she's slowly becoming more confident and assertive.

Thing is, I'm not sure that she's being portrayed as a saint because she's disabled, or just because she's being the typical idealized shonen manga heroine. She really does slot into that specific female character archetype, and it's kind of unfortunate. I hope the author will allow her to be a bit flawed, or lose her temper, or act petty or be jealous, because she's been frightfully dull the past few chapters.

She seemed pretty uncomfortable with Ueno this chapter and her expression at the end was really weird (maybe a mix of jealousy and anxiety?).

Regarding her overall characterization, I found it somewhat accurate taking into account the way she's treated by her family and her School's experiencies. She's growing out of it, just than she seems to be assertive only with people she trusts.

Has anyone read Sousei no Onmyouji? It looks like generic shounen at first glance, but I get this odd feeling that this one has potential. The creator is also the person behind Binbougami Ga!, which I remember being pretty good. There's only three chapters out, but it looks like this is a monthly publication, and those three chapters are all in the vicinity of 50 pages.

Also, the main girl is actually pretty reasonable for a tsundere, which caught my eye.

While the first chapter was kind of lame it quickly picked up steam on the second chapter with the reveal of the kids 'destinies'. Since the story is more focused than Binbougami Ga! it looks like this could be even better, definitly keeping an eye on it, nice find!

Yeah the most recent translated chapters for Mob Psycho 100 have been great, instead of merely good. It does take a while for the story to get going though.

Basically it's about a kid with ludicrous superpowers but no real motivation to use them, except he doesn't have much of a choice because he's always getting caught up in other people's bullshit schemes. On paper it might sound pretty similar to One-Punch Man but in practice it manages to feel different enough.

It looks like what I and others were saying upthread is correct, what with the little sister outright confirming Shouko's been showing false smiles all along. But it's good that there really has been a change and I haven't just been imagining it. We might gradually get to see more and more of Shouko's true personality, which is something I've been waiting for.

It got pretty god drat Hollywood towards the end, but for what it was I thought it was a pretty good story. It's nice at least having some closure on something I first watched 10 god drat years ago.

The vampire soldier thing was executed pretty well, despite the topic not sounding that good. It also had the art that I liked the most.

I had trouble following what was going on in Morning Star, and wasn't surprised when I saw that one of the judges felt the same way.

There's this one series that some girl does as a web comic (but also releases volumes) called Carciphona: http://carciphona.com/

While the plot/characters aren't anything amazing, I find it really impressive that she is able to release a very professional/polished comic all by herself (and some of her colored/details pictures on her personal website, http://shilin.net/, are also pretty great). I've been buying the volumes just to support her, since it's definitely an uphill battle to be a successful comic writer/artist.
