Is this just for romance shoujo? I haven't read every thread but the only shoujo I've completed, and the only ones I tend to have interest in, are ones with big sweeping fantasy plots that also have love in there somewhere. Not that I don't love love and melodrama (I started with Fushigi Yuugi which, while not exactly good, gave me a taste of what I do and do not like in my shoujo) but I just can't get excited for a mundane romance. I want action and adventure and maybe the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

Currently I'm looking into the works of Moto Hagio, who came highly recommended. I'm also four volumes into Basara and really enjoying it.

Also I watched the anime of FY because, while it wasn't very good, I absolutely love that soundtrack. It has to be one of my favorites in all anime.

Naw anything shoujo or josei goes here, even if the thread tends to lean towards the romance-y end of things. Your post reminds me that I keep meaning to read some Magic Knight Rayearth sooner or later. I have no idea if I like CLAMP's stuff or not, might as well start there.

~Adorable horror~
While I love me some romance, I also love me some non-romance-focused shoujo/josei. Basara is pretty good from what I've read of it. CLAMP in general are a group your mileage might vary with--they do a bunch of rather different series. If you like one CLAMP manga, you might dislike another, and vice versa. Some other suggestions:

Sukeban Deka is about a deliquent girl who gets recruited as a detective. It's kinda violent, with villains that're over-the-top evil. Actually, it's over the top in a number of ways, but a fun ride. Not many series where you'll find villains that attack you with venomous snakes.

Natsume Yuujinchou is one of those supernatural series about a kid who can see spirits. In this case, he got a book of names stolen by his grandma who went around bullying spirits for their names. He ends up returning those names one by one. It's a licensed series.

If you like horror, there's Screaming Lessons which is kinda like Tales From the Crypt but targeted toward a shoujo audience. Don't read if you don't like horrible things happening to children.

I'm looking for advice on what to read, I've been getting into some of this stuff but then others just leave me dropping the manga a few chapters in when I go 'yeah this is not for me.' I really loved Bonnouji, I like Horimiya, Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa and 14-sai no Koi, and I enjoyed B-Gata H-Kei though it did definitely go too slow. I am looking for some cute, fluffy stuff that doesn't roll too hard on the drama. (Ideally also 'doesn't take loving forever to progress' but I realize this may not be possible.)

I've tried Taiyou no Ie but I dropped it pretty fast, since...well, the drama wasn't too heavy yet, but I could see the storm building up, and I didn't find it cute or funny enough to keep going. (Also, I liked the coworker more than Mao.)

I've already read LoveCom, that was good, but I am running out of stuff to read without playing Russian Roulette on Batoto, so...you guys have any reccomendations?

E: I suppose it is also important for me to note that really willowy art turns me off some - I couldn't get through Hibi Chouchou because art. (I've tried Kimi no Todoke and I can't really say why I stop each time beyond 'how long is this going to take?')

Hmmmm...I was actually going to recommend Hibi Chouchou before I saw your edit since that is pretty much the cutest, fluffiest, drama-free romance I can think of. If art is an issue maybe look into seinen romance like Sekine-kun no Koi, Sekitou Elegy, or Chocolat (the one by Kubonouchi Eisaku this is a common title) although they are a little less fluffy and not entirely drama-free. Have you read Usotsuki Lily? They get together right away and it's pretty much pure silliness. Stand Up! is also light and cute but I don't know if you'd like the art and there isn't that much of it right now.

Kimi Ni Todoke is worth enduring the sluggish relationship buildup for. After they finally loving commit to it, it's really great, one of the best in my opinion. Only problem is the length it takes to get to that point, but there's still like...60ish chapters after they make it official to read, I think?

edit: if you're reading KNT for the two main characters, you're missing the point imo. Sawako is great and all, but the side characters are the real strong point of KNT.

Fun Shoe
Rose of Versailles is amazing for an old shojo manga. While it is melodramatic, it doesn't fall into really dated shojo tropes, like virginity is something all girls must need. (Fushugi Yuugi)

There's another manga by the same author called Claudine. It's a yuri manga and the main protagonist is transgendered.

Give it a chance.

Also, Fushugi Yuugi is like Twilight if Stephenie Meyer turned her back on Mormonism and decided to watch a bunch of really weird porn.

Hey guys: we're currently in the midst of a push for improving / adding new content to the ADTRWiki, our recommendation and good-series-to-watch listing.

One thing I am currently trying to improve is our New to Anime & Manga listing, which provides a genre-specific list of some suggested shows that newer folks may find worth checking out.

Thing is, I'm not entirely happy with how the Romance sections for both anime and manga are; there's some titles that I know are sort of in there as filler, and I'd like to get some better things in there if possible (ideally easily accessible ones, even better if they can be purchased!)

If you've got any thoughts on things to switch in / what they should be replacing, please feel free to share them in the ADTRWiki maintenance thread we're temporarily running. Additionally, if there's any series you like please help share your opinions on them on the wiki! This is a great way to give / receive suggestions on interesting shows, and ideally should be handling the majority load of it. For example, just yesterday I made a page for The Rose of Versailles, which is great and you all should check out.

Aug 5, 2006

I think Bonnouji would definitely be a good fit for the romance manga section and might be able to replace either Skip Beat or Fruits Basket. Paradise Kiss and Kimi ni Todoke should stay though.

For the anime section you could double up with the Kimi ni Todoke anime, which is also excellent. Somewhere in one of the other adtrwiki threads someone suggested Toradora...and I kind of agree with that choice. It's got characters that actually grow and change, which is surprising because at first glance it seems packed with all the shonen romance/harem stereotypes. Don't get me wrong KareKano is a much better show over all, but is marred by the weird ending caused by creative differences between Ano and the author.

I wouldn't move any of the others, but those also happen to be my favorites so I'm a bit biased.

In Takako Shimura news: it looks like she's got a new series, and hasn't, in fact, stopped doing manga altogether after ending both Wandering Son and Aoi Hana.

quote:

Manga creator Takako Shimura announced on Friday that she will launch a new manga series in the April issue of Shueisha's Jump X magazine on March 10. Shimura confirmed the series is a sequel to her 2012 "Musume no Iede" (The Daughter's Running-Away) one-shot. The first three pages of the original one-shot can be read for free on Shueisha's "Girls Jump" site.

The manga is an omnibus of stories of various girls that have run away from home. The first chapter of the manga revolves around a girl who ran away from her mother's home after learning that her mother is remarrying. She finds refuge at her father's home.

Now that the series is done (for now), I'm going to put in a formal recommendation for Yamaguchi Serika's Dandelion Among Lilies series. The story is primarily about three characters: Kanae, Mizuho (Kanae's older sister), and Ena, Mizuho's girlfriend. When Mizuho, who left her sister alone many years ago, calls up her younger sister asking if she can come over for a bit, Kanae is surprised when she arrives to see that her older sister is bringing another woman, whom she introduces as her girlfriend.

Kanae's first reaction to seeing her sister in a relationship with a woman is shock and surprise, but she quickly comes to accept Ena, but is naturally curious about why her sister is in a relationship with a woman, since Mizuho never said anything about Ena. Ena says that it's because she loves her sister, but when she asks Mizuho the same question, she finds her sister is only going out with her because Ena said that she loved her. Ena overhears the discussion, but doesn't say anything about it. The next day, though, relationship troubles emerge between them, with Ena thinking that Mizuho might not love her as much as she loves her (Ena has absolutely no interest in men, but Mizuho was in a relationship with a guy before he cheated on her with another man. The series implies Ena and Mizuho met at their job). The manga is primarily about Kanae helping her sister and Ena reach out to each other, to put aside Mizuho's past and doubts and have her sister meet and accept Ena as her lover.

The main reason I ended up getting into this series in the first place is because the art is fantastic. The author has a great realistic style, and the amount of detail put into all the outfits in the series is great, even if they're relatively plain. I also loved the story, since what I look for in yuri is sincere emotion. I like seeing characters who are sincerely in love with each other, that no matter what might happen, they have a mutual love between them, in spite of what societal and familial pressures might be in front of them. Unfortunately for the author, the magazine she was publishing in went belly-up for all intents and purposes, so she had to quickly end the series.

There's definitely potential for the series to continue under a new magazine's aegis, or Yamaguchi could start a new story. Either way, I really hope she'll keep working, since her art is great and her writing is exactly what I look for in yuri.

Does anyone know if "confessions" are actually something that happens frequently/is normal in Japan? While I guess it happens sometimes in the US, usually people ask each other out and it's sort of implied that there's interest there. Most people don't call you over and say "I LIKE YOU."

So I read Honey & Honey today. I don't remember if it's been mentioned before but it's a semi-autobiographical tale of the author's lesbian relationship. As such it is very grounded in reality and is told with the intent of spreading understanding. It's fairly cute, mature, and fairly educational. The art is very simple, and the most recently translated chapter is a bit of a downer, but there's one chapter left to be translated, so I'm hopeful for a happy ending.
