Speaking of weird XIII-2 glitches, in Academia 4XX, why do random civilians just drop over on the ground and scream when you run through? No one even mentions it, it's a pretty chill place and then just randomly NPCs are on the ground dead/unconscious.

Its suppose to imply that Noel and Serah are assholes, and shove people over/living in Academia has induced vertigo in everyone, and they fall over randomly. They do get up after a few seconds though.

Is Academia 400 where the encounter rate inexplicably like, quintuples but all the fights are so easy it takes longer to load/exit the fight than the actual fighting? Because that place is the absolute least amount of fun I've ever had with a FF, I think. Just abysmally awful.

I guess they were already pretty set on the combat system that was coming in Lightning Returns by that point? Because even though it was just one fight over and over, it really showcases what's fun/tactical about the combat in the series. If you aren't properly timing your shifts you won't win the fight.

I only really want to fight the Ultros boss in XIII-2, but I can't afford to buy silly boss fights for games. I only want the Ultros one because Ultros Apparently Akihiko Yoshida is joining the Kickstarter for Matsuno's new SRPG, and won't be a stretch goal. That truly is looking to be an Ivalice/Ogre Battle successor and I'm praying they at least meet the Sakimoto stretch goal.

I think I'll try out Suikoden then based on the suggestions so far, they've gotta be on PSN or whatever right? Are they generally well written games? Are we talking FF7 (bad) or FF9 (good) writing wise? Before anyone jumps down my throat, the quality of the script in FF9 is generally quite good, say what you will about the plot and stuff.

cat doter posted:I think I'll try out Suikoden then based on the suggestions so far, they've gotta be on PSN or whatever right? The original Suikoden is on PSN. The rest are tucked away safely in a vault, where Konami can't accidentally make money or engender goodwill off them or something. Who knows if they'll ever see a rerelease in any form, even in Japan. The last bit of PR I saw from them regarding this issue just said "be patient" and that was at least a year ago. But yes, my bitterness aside, Suikoden games are generally very well written. Suikoden II, III, and V especially, though getting your hands on those can be expensive; Suikoden II in particular may cost you a limb, or a firstborn child. It was up in the same range as old Saturn RPGs like Panzer Dragoon Saga and Dragon Force the last time I checked. Anyway, the original Suikoden is no slouch either. It probably hasn't held up as well as its sequels, but it's a perfectly enjoyable old RPG and far more playable than some of its contemporaries, like the first Persona.

The main reason Suikoden 2 hasn't seen a rerelease is that it's a very buggy game. Nothing that really breaks it but Konami is unwilling or unable to fix the bugs needed for a PSN release.

I think the Shadow Hearts series is incredible, some of the best RPGs on the PS2. 1-2 are direct sequels but the 3rd is a stand alone game with multiple endings and a better battle system/characters. For reference, your party consists of a Native American lycanthrope, a plucky upstart teen (who is more than meets the Eye) and Antonio Banderas from once upon a time in Mexico. The first two games are very somber but funny and the 3rd is very cool.

You forgot the middle-aged Brazilian ninja, whose master is a giant talking drunken master cat who you help bust Al Capone out of prison. Also the magical girl vampire who has a nasty sweet tooth and different powers depending on how fat she currently is. Oh, and you get sidequests from H.P. Lovecraft.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQrBSO74DzA This trailer for Lightning Returns is interesting, as it a recap of the FFXIII and FFIII-2 plot using Final Fantasy VI style sprites. It really well done too, but bums me out they cant just make a new game like this, instead of the horrible iOS style they been using.

Shadow Hearts 2 also had the The Man Festival Shadow Hearts 1 also had a pretty kinky torture snuff scene where you could find a naughty magazine. That is the key item needed to get the good ending in the game.

You find collectable gay erotica, give them to an efemminate gay dressmaker, who'll then make dresses for your doll so it can cast different magic skills. Don't let that put anyone off though, the combat is great, and the above is just a small part of the campy weirdness.

Rirse posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQrBSO74DzA It's really well done because it's a hyper edited video where you can keep the pacing up and frantic. It really wouldn't work in a full game. And Dimensions is literally what you're looking for. Minus the people sprites it's FF6 as hell and even those are actually really well done in that game. The super ugly look has only really happened in the iOS port of 6, but I'll never understand why people would care since they can get better versions of FF6 for almost every system under the sun. Butt Ghost posted:As someone who has never played either of those games, I was unable to follow any of that. Because. That's the reason. Serah is a crystal because she completed her focus, being cursed as a l'cie means completing your focus or turning into a mindless monster, Fang and Vanille were tasked with destroying cocoon several hundred years prior to 13, and no people can't live in Cocoon anymore. Caius wants to kill Lightning because he wants to kill Etro who is the goddess of whatever, time, the paradoxes happened because Lightning (or something else I don't remember), Caius and the lady dying over and over is the Oracle, Caius is one of the two protectors of the oracle and every time the oracle sees the future or something she's closer to dying and Caius is basically immortal so he gets to see the oracle die a bunch, eventually says "gently caress this poo poo" and decides to destroy time so the oracle doesn't have to keep dying, and serah for some reason I don't remember has the same power as the oracles so everytime she corrects the paradoxes she's closer to dying and then she dies. Caius is also dead which released CHAOS onto the world and now the world is ending an that's where Lightning Returns comes in. I think I got most of it.
