You'd think an "Economic War on Women" would be SNAP cuts, or opposition to raising minimum wage, or repealing the ACA, or allowing employers to dictate women's health care choices, or defunding clinics that provide health services to poor women, or opposing the Equal Rights Amendment, or cutting out school breakfast programs...but those are all Republican policies...

That's the worst part of the whole thing. There's no sense that Blitzer is doing anything to facilitate a clean discussion on the topic. I see this kind of thing all over the place, with talking heads just trying to talk over each other, and quite frankly I don't know why anyone hosting such a discussion would let that fly. Go ahead, cut the other person's mic until it's their turn. Maybe instate a talking stick. If they're gonna behave like bratty eight-year-olds, they should absolutely be treated as such.

The way news networks enable these tools by idly standing by while they dominate a discussion with bully tactics is downright disgraceful.

Yeah at this point everyone that doesn't get their talking points straight from the GOP is the liberal media so you might as well try and show some sort of actual fairness since the idiots that saturate themselves in Fox News and crew are lost anyway. The fear of getting labeled is so dumb since they are going to do it regardless.

Piell posted:

I think this is kind of the media equivalent to the argument that if you tax millionaires higher they are going to flee from places like New York and go galt in low tax poo poo holes when that clearly isn't the case. If media outlets start treating GOP like the children they are and make them engage in debates as adults or call them on outrageous lies and they all refuse to go on CNN, MSNBC, etc they aren't going to get their message out to people that aren't in the right wing media bubble and they need to have some out of base presence. You'd lose the real hacks that call for idiotic poo poo and have no factual basis to their arguments whatsoever but that can only help the overall discussion. The "well one person had an opinion based on studies and facts while the other was shrieking about death panels; I guess the truth is in the middle both made good points" thing is incredibly damaging.

Buckley's Neo-Confederate shitrag National Review might be in a fight for its life, after a defamation lawsuit, which they have handled in the most National Review way possible.

quote:

Climate scientist Michael Mann is suing National Review and Mark Steyn, one of its leading writers, for defamation. It's a charge that's notoriously hard to prove, which is no doubt why the magazine initially refused to apologize for an item on its blog in which Steyn accused Mann of fraud. Steyn also quoted a line by another conservative writer (Rand Simberg) that called Mann "the Jerry Sandusky of climate science, except that instead of molesting children, he has molested and tortured data." (Simberg and the free market think tank for which he works, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, are also named in the suit.)

The lawsuit has not been going well for the magazine. In July, Judge Natalia Combs Greene rejected a motion to dismiss the suit. The defendants appealed, and last week D.C. Superior Court Judge Frederick Weisberg rejected the motion again, opening the door for the discovery phase of the lawsuit to begin.

That's not all. On Christmas Eve, Steyn (who regularly guest hosts Rush Limbaugh's radio show) wrote a blog post in which he excoriated Greene, accusing her of incompetence, stupidity, and obtuseness. As a result of this outburst, the law firm that had been representing National Review and Steyn (Steptoe & Johnson) has dropped Steyn as a client and reportedly has plans to withdraw as counsel for the magazine as well. (Now representing himself in the lawsuit, non-lawyer Steyn continues on the attack here and here.)

It's a really sad fact but tons of people think that those who do low-level jobs like retail deserve to be paid a low wage as punishment for their lack of success. I think it has something to do with our society's unhealthy view that your salary is essentially your self-worth. If the guy flipping your burgers isn't making a pittance compared to you how are you going to feel superior to them?

It's a combination of people being insane and people seeing themselves as the people they want to be (job-creating, wealthy employers) and not who they are.

Dan Ariely did a study on this once, but I can't remember the name. I think it was around the time he studied American income distribution spread across quintiles.
