You can't really make fun of prog for being too pretentious...it's like making fun of James Brown for being too funky or KISS for being too gimmicky.

The pretense is the whole point.

"Symphonic" prog is just a catchall for what people think of when they think of prog. Capes, mellotron, organ, sequins, Rickenbackers, nonsense lyrics.

Super pretentious though

Describing and quantifying tone is hard. Everyone knows what "bad" tone sounds like, and most everyone should be able to pick out a J, a P, a Rick, a Stingray, and a hollowbody in the most general terms by sound. Past that, it's like trying to say one color is "better" than another, you know?

I've been a J-bass guy for the last ten or so years, favoring just a smidge towards the back pickup to get more definition, which works fantastically in heavier or denser mixes. I just like that little quack you get from the back pickup of a J with roundwounds. For the last few years I've also kept a P with flats on hand, as well as an electric upright, both sit fantastically as the mixes get sparser.

Guys whose tone I love: Stu Zender, Paul Turner, Rocco, Tim Commerford, Chris Squire, Pino, Janek Gwizdala, Richard Bona, Robert DeLeo, Steve DiGiorgio.

But (if you want to talk about pretentiousness) my main rig is the best bass tone I've ever heard or played in my life.

I've been playing with a 1999 Mexican Fender J for a while now, and after I started playing with my old hard rock outfit again, I'd been wanting to customize. I'd love to get away from the "Midnight Wine" purple paint job, but paint would probably be too expensive/too much of a hassle since I don't really have anywhere to do custom jobs at home. I'd change the pickguard, but there's the added confusion of this not only being a Mexican bass but a pre-2001 Mexican bass. Apparently the pickups changed shape again during that time?

Last, but certainly not least, why the heck are the pickups in the Mexican J's not wired in parallel? I've always wondered why I get hum, no matter how my pickup volumes were configured. I remember someone saying that this can be remedied, but do they offer the service for pre-2001's?

Our frontman also recently announced he wanted to stop playing his acoustic electric during sets and songs and leave it all up to the lead guitarist and I, so I wanna come up with a heavy sound that will fill in all the gaps and carry the rhythm during leads. I've been using a 2001-ish SWR amp pretty much running flat and a VT Bass running into the preamp, sort of jumping around the SVT setting, looking to press up the character though and get some more distortion in. We haven't done much as of yet to experiment with the "new" direction, and I don't get to play with the rig anywhere off stage or outside the studio, so I'm just trying to imagine it in my head.

Hey bass dudes! I'm just coming back to playing after a ~10 year hiatus. I only ever really played through school and then a couple bands shortly after, then kinda let it go. A few friends have started jamming again so I'm getting in on it too.

Anyway, I'm back, and I now have a beautiful Ibanez SR505! It looks and feels so much nicer than anything I've owned before. I've just picked up a Behringer Ultrabass BA115 cab but I'm not sure what to do for a head. I've salvaged the head from a Fender Bassman 150 combo that had a hosed speaker. Is this going to work out okay or should I pick up something else? I don't want to spend more than around $500-600AUD if I can help it.

These are the places I usually look at:

https://www.basscentre.com.au
https://www.guitarfactoryportmac.com.au
https://www.kosmic.com.au

Edit: the other option is to get rid of the cab and the Fender thing and get something like a GK MB 115 combo. bass Centre have it for 799 which seems a decent price here.

Welcome to Soundgear bass ownership, prepare for a life of being wholly unsatisfied with other basses. Personally I would unload that Behringer cab and go for a nice combo, or get a smaller 210 cab.

You actually need three cabinets connected to get all 435 watts, otherwise its 145 or 290.

Oh, David...
Berry Oakley frequently used one of those with the Allman Brothers, but not with the matching cabs. I've never read any definitive accounts of what he used on "At Fillmore East", but I know that he was running the 400PS through Sunn 2x15s loaded with JBLs at some point during 1971.

Have you tried adjusting the truss rod? Sometimes doing that can fix dead frets and isn't that hard to do.

Haven't tried that, will give it a shot when I get home. I'm reluctant to gently caress with it too much because I bought it online from a store interstate and I'm within the return period.

They suggested the string could possibly be dented at that point as well, so I've got a couple of things to look at when I get home.

Rest in peace, you shitposting bastard.
Except you shouldn't adjust a truss rod to deal with a fret issue. You really need to get a leveling done (which you shouldn't need on a new instrument) if it's that serious of an issue. BUT before you do that, just check to see that the fretboard radius is reflected in the saddle heights. If the action is wrong, it only takes a very slight low spot to cause your problem. And raising a saddle is too easy and risk free not to try.

Widdershins
May 19, 2007
Not even trying
Agreed, a truss rod adjustment for a single "dead fret" on a single string that far down the fingerboard isn't going to do much good.
Remember to remove a bit of tension from the string before you raise the saddle & you'll also need to adjust intonation for that one as well since you've just changed the string length. a2 + b2 = c2

You can also use a small straight edge to span the offending and each neighboring fret as well. They should be level and you shouldn't be able to have the straight edge rock back and forth. Might not be that the 15th is low, but rather the 16th is too high in that area.

The vast majority of the time they're not really dead frets, they're dead spots, and I've never come across a bass that didn't have one.

It's not really the fret so much as it is a combination of a lot of factors that you really can't do anything about. All you can really do is make sure all of your hardware is good and tight (neck screws, bridge, maybe a slight tightening of the truss-rod) to help the resonance.

Typically the only time it's an issue with an actual fret is when it's a heavily used instruments and the frets are worn down. With a new bass, it MAY be a manufacturing flaw, but most likely it's just a dead spot with poor resonance.

edit: And in my opinion, you're pretty lucky that yours is so high up on the neck... My main lakland has one on the D string on the 9th.
