Is there any veracity to their claims or is this just GAF being GAF?
Wait, a message board thread is speculating about things they don’t actually know anything about? Weird.

Here’s the short version: If I didn’t still think that there was a way for us to create the content we want to create and grow into something bigger and cooler, I would have left last year.

I’m tempted to leave it at that since forum junk like that typically doesn’t warrant an answer, but the site’s actually doing really well. Just kinda slogging through the process of getting budget poo poo locked down and putting a proper “let’s actually get some more people in here because this is completely ridiculous” plan together. It’s taken forever to get to this point but it seems like everyone is finally in basic agreement about pushing a reasonably-sized pile of money my way and letting me spend it on humans.

We should get that new video player pushed out next week, and that comes with a larger code merge that’ll make it easier for engineers to actually add new features to the site. We’re talking about finding better ways to showcase premium videos as one of the early things we’d like to change, and the wiki needs some additional attention (but that’s a larger, more difficult project). We’ll start messing around with mid-roll video ads in the near future, but it looks like we’re going to eventually remove ads for monthly members, too. It’s sort of a careful balancing act between bringing money in so we can continue to afford additional hires without making the site look like garbage or putting 100% of our stuff behind a paywall. The podcast ads seem to be doing especially well. I’d like to bring back a free, regular live show at some point.

We’re also talking about road trips and tours and bringing back the Big Live Live Show and a bunch of other wild poo poo, but that’s all further off, just kinda kicking ideas around at the moment.

They've been pretty understaffed for a while now to the point where it's really strange how they seemingly hadn't gotten a single new person since the buyout that wasn't stolen from Gamespot. I was definitely getting the creeping feeling that CBS didn't think GB was worth spending extra money on, personally. The extreme imbalance between the amount of paid and free content along with the new trend of podcast ads could imply a need for more money, too.

I don't think the worry about the site is unwarranted or completely off-base and it's good to hear that it's going well.

Yeah, some sort of update just like this is exactly the sort of thing that helps assuage fears that the site isn't doing well. Giving the community at large a quick rundown of what's happening behind the scenes(what they can talk about at least) is useful in dispelling doubts of the site's success.

That, combined with Ian leaving (which I think was 100% that he wanted to advance his own interests, and good for him) and them still seemingly not having gotten reimbursed for the stolen E3 gear, last we heard anyway. I personally didn't think the sky was falling, but I could see how some would. It's not like doomsaying is unheard of in this particular circle.

The thing people need to realize is that businesses go through cycles where they get all retarded about spending anything, even if they're doing fine, and it's all at the whim of whoever is on top. CBSi might have just been in a phase like that, who knows? That said, I do hope Jeff gets some capital so he can get a video production guy at least - Drew and Vinny at this point are primary content guys, as much as I love Vinny loving around on the Tricaster.

I didn't think the site was in any danger, but Jeff once said that CBS just kind of leaves them alone in a corner somewhere, which has both good and bad consequences, like taking forever to approve new funding and such. I'm glad to hear he's optimistic, though!

Disappointing Pie
Feb 7, 2006
Words cannot describe what a disaster the pie was.
As a manager at a small business I've been kind of curious about how CBSi views Patrick and Alex working out of the area and presumably earning full salary. For a site that is incredibly personality driven having two people not able to appear on camera and up until recently released a much smaller portion of the content, it probably appears to put them in a tough spot with management. It doesn't really make sense to me. You've got two people you're probably paying decent money that possibly to management don't appear to contribute as much as they could if they were on location and may factor into why CBSi was a bit reluctant to increase staff size for a while there. Honestly if you count every person and the couple engineering guys GB appears to have a decent sized team for their site. Also if a manager isn't familiar with the site and Vinny and Drew are labeled "Video Production" as their title explaining to a manager why you need another video guy probably doesn't make the slightest sense either.

But I'm completely just looking at it from a hands off management perspective and hopefully nothing like this is actually occurring and the management team actually pays attention and cares about the site enough to follow what they're doing.

It's not in an industry even remotely connected by Giant Bomb but I've been through a few acquisitions from the perspective of the company doing the buying and in every case there has been a transition period of a good 12-18 months while integration happens, mid and long range business plans get put together and it's only after all that behind the scenes stuff has been done that investment begins to happen.

Though they're not on camera they do seem to post the majority of the actual written content on the site between Patrick's articles and Alex's reviews, but that's just my impression and less actual hard numbers.

I never fully understood what the deal was with Alex. I always figured he was part-time, as he does write stuff for other sites. Before the morning show justifying his employment would be a real challenge. I can't remember if he was writing for other places prior to the acquisition though.

Rorie also didn't replace Dave as such, since Dave was an engineer, and Rorie is doing community management.

Let's not forget that half the time if you're on streaming things just stop loading/buffering. It's gotten so bad that I have to watch at super low quality to get something that's not a slide show or watch on youtube. Except the reason they've been light on content is due to Jeff finalizing money issues so he can hire new people, and Vinny ordering new equipment?

If they had the time to do more content, they easily could. There are 15+ games they could do Unfinisheds of. They could do Bombasticas. Jar Times. The Daily Desura with Vinny. How about more Pathfinders? Oh, or how about Rust/DayZ, I mean they kept saying they really wanted to cover those, but needed like a full week on just one of them to do it justice. If nothing is coming out surely they have a week to burn on Rust/DayZ. Or what about all those games they missed during the holidays last year, while they were on vacation, that'd be some easy QLs, and doing them in January wouldn't be that hard.

Why not reintroduce TNT, or a variation of TNT, I mean if they are just sitting around doing nothing waiting for the new games to come out, shouldn't be that hard to do multiplayer stuff with the community. Why not double Bombcasts, one on Tuesday, one on Thursday focused on Science/Comedy. Not like they have any better things to do, right? Or hell a "Battlefield Hour with Jeff." where he plays Battlefield 4 with Vinny.

I could keep going if you want? They could come up with plenty of content that has nothing to do with new releases if they wanted, and have probably thought of most of this. The bigger issue is Jeff/Vinny don't have any time to do much besides Bombcast/Unprof because they are working backend right now to get some new people on board.

Giant Bomb's greatest strength is that they can put out content besides coverage of the latest games and people love it. Everyone clamoring for "More, more, more" is a good thing, not some "entitled baby" thing. They can show that to CBSi and say "Hey, we can't give this to them if you won't let us hire more people".
