It's only in the last chapter of the game, if I recall correctly. And it's basically been completely gutted compared to what it was in FFX.

Now the matches are only one five minute round, but you don't have any direct control over your players. Instead, the bulk of the mini-game is devoted to recruiting players and setting them on training regimens. They basically turned it from a sports minigame into a sports management simulator minigame.

Final Fantasy 13 in Japanese with subtitles trip report so far: this is so much better

Let me tell you about how all the mannerisms I noticed made no sense with what the audio was saying in English. My favourite so far is everyone being shocked about a sound of an enemy fighter plane of some sort and firing off all kinds of "ooh" "aah" GASP and whatnot, while the English audio and subtitle is like "WHO IS IT?" "WHERE ARE THEY?" "OVER THERE!"

I hate dubs.

I got FFXIII-2 for $6 and I'm glad I did because my interest in this thing is tanking rapidly. Serah and Noel are horrible characters - not even actively offensive like Vanille could get, just so bland that there's nothing for my attention to latch on to. Noel especially. This kid is the last human being alive in his world and he's almost as peppy as his colorful, spotless parachute pants would imply. I'm not asking for AU-era Cloud here, but acknowledge the situation a little bit! The combat's nowhere near interesting enough to sustain me without some reason for watching the numbers.

Of course, it's also hard for me to give a poo poo about events knowing where the series finally ends up. Can't discount that.

It isn't out yet, and nobody really cares but it's a dick move to spoil the ending anytime soon.

I think people who are expecting a hilarious trackwreck are going to be disappointed. The plot is a lot more coherent and generic JRPG than FFXIII-2's and the game in general is bizarrely self-aware and makes fun of itself regularly.

That is honestly the weirdest thing I'm taking away from playing it. The game has plenty of moments of self-serious melodrama and then a bunch of moments where it just makes fun of itself completely shamelessly. It isn't exactly comedic but it's more self-aware than FFXIII or XIII-2 were.

Admittedly that is helped that I spend half the cutscenes in the game looking like this:

I'm playing the English version for a review. No way in loving hell was I importing another FFXIII game.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a FFXIII game. It isn't a masterpiece of writing in any shape, way, or form. It just actually attempts to have a sense of humor about itself in-between all the turgid melodrama. It actually feels a bit out of place considering the setting is a horrible decaying hell-world.

It also has a lot of unintentional comedy in that the NPCs are designed by creating base NPCs and then varying them slightly and adding various Adornments to them without any form of irony. Leading to guys like this being played completely straight:

The first one did pretty well on sheer inertia, but its returns weren't quite as good because, well, it was a Bad Game. The second one started to fall fast because SE advertised Lightning all over the place (she was hugely popular with their demographics and girls in particular) and then shunted her aside in favor of FFXIII's least interesting side character (a major accomplishment) and some new jackass with even less personality than average.

The bad Amazon reviews basically boil down to "The gameplay/music/graphics are good but I can't get into the storyline at all." The 500-year time jump from the end of FFXIII-2 seems really unpopular. There are also complaints about time system (often referring to it in the same breath as Majora's Mask and referring to both negatively.) Multiple reviewers said they felt rushed by the system and that it didn't fit what they expected from an JRPG (i.e: a leisurely pace.)

There are also complaints about the difficulty but that has been a constant since FFXIII came out and should probably be ignored. Some people also were really unhappy the battle system got seriously overhauled, usually hand-in-hand with the difficulty complaints.

Which all seems basically fair to me. The time-limit thing in particular is really going to be make-or-break for a lot of people even if it is insanely forgiving. (See... pretty much any game with a strict time limit on the planet.)

Thanks, but meant why LR did poorly (heard it only sold 200,000 as of a couple weeks ago), which ^^^ sort of answered. This covers why reviewers didn't like but not so much why it didn't sell - XIII was not resoundingly reviewed either but still managed to sell lots of copies. Wondering if there's been any developer interviews or anything as I wouldn't begin to know where to look for that stuff in Japan and can't speak a word.

It is a combination of FFXIII-2 not being well received and Japan moving away from console games in general in addition to problems with the game itself.

It's sold more than 200,000 copies though. It did more than that its first week. ( 277,082 its first week.) It's somewhere around 500,000 now which is not good but closer to FFXIII-2's 800,000 Japanese sales.

It should be noted that this isn't good for Final Fantasy but is part of an overall trend in Japanese games. The best-selling console game in Japan in 2013 was Grand Theft Auto V which sold 605,000 copies and the only other two console games on the 2013 list were Mario U and Wii Party U, both of which did around 500,000. Final Fantasy should historically do better than LR did but there's a downward trend in console games in general. (Which is going to make the PS4's reception over there interesting.)

Edit: I will say that there is plenty of remarkable stupid in LR though if just for anything involving the XIII-2 characters.

Wow, that's something. It seems like it might almost capture some of Majora's Mask's weirdness on accident, if nothing else.

Have you played around with the difficulty settings? If so, are the differences between Easy and Normal mostly mechanics issues (health restores after battle on Easy, and you can escape without it costing you an hour, etc.), or do enemies have less HP and do less damage on Easy too? I don't want to be totally bored, but things like being able to fight a boss for a while to find some weaknesses, then escaping and setting up my loadout accordingly on Easy seem like they'd just make things more pleasant.

I've only played on Normal, but I would not recommend Easy at all. The game itself is already fairly easy if you play around with customization. (I found a customization that literally makes me invincible to physical attacks for example, although I can't use it offensively.) I haven't needed to Escape at all and time is so plentiful that having to sacrifice and hour here or there isn't an issue.

You can refight any boss in the game from the Ark so if you want to go for a high score you don't need to do it your first time through.

Lightning Return has no experience system at all. You gain stats by performing sidequests for people or after boss fights. You also gain passive stat boosts you can equip onto armor/spells and obviously better armor/weapons improve your overall capabilities.

Fighting is used for three things:
Gil
Items (often used for sidequests) This also includes spell/attack drops from enemies.
Getting EP. EP is used to either use special super-moves (Curaga, Arise, ect), to Overclock in battle, or to temporarily halt the flow of time. Pausing time only takes 1 EP so as long as you can (more or less) gain 1 EP before time starts again you can keep time paused effectively infinitely. Enemies tend to give somewhere between .05 and .20 EP a fight with certain mid-bosses and Chaos-enemies giving 1-2 EP instead. Bosses (at least as far as I've encountered) always give 5 EP so you don't need to hold back when fighting them.

It can be gotten pretty much as soon as you get access to travel, which is very early on. Go to the Desert Dunes and collect three Lizard Tails for the quest Lucky Charm. Lizards just wander the map and are killed with a sword slash, they're not even enemies, so you can do this no matter what.

I've found a lot of outfits that are quite good or at least fine by JRPG standards and I have not felt gimped in the least by using them. The worst I can say is that I found one pretty-ugly outfit that gave me an incredibly powerful (although unnecessary) move and that for a while I was using a classy-but-ridiculous evening gown because it had a strong default magic spell. I haven't felt the slightest need to go near lovely trashy fanservice outfits. There are also a few outfits which can be massive improved by altering their color scheme so they look less eyebiting.
