Is there a Persona 3/4-like time limit in Valkyria Chronicles II? It almost seems implied that you can only do so many missions, Free or Story, before time increments. Or does the month only advance after completing the story missions? Basically wondering if you have the freedom to do extra missions for grinding or not without worrying about screwing yourself over.

I'm playing through my PSX Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure PSX game again for the first time in years, and what I like about it is that it's just cute and fluffy, and not cute, fluffy and grossly sexualized like NIS' later games. What I've never liked is the terrible dungeon design, so I'm happy to see Gamefaqs has some maps.

Front mission 5 is translated and is the best of all the front missions. You have many tactical options and the story is kickin'

Fire Emblem is light on character building options compared to FFT, but it is also really good.

Any Fire Emblem. The new one is actually the easiest in the series so if you want a challenge seek out older ones. FE 7 on the GBA, known in the west as just Fire Emblem, is a good start and easily available via emulation. FE 9 is harder and more complex (and just generally better IMO) but is only the gamecube and expensive.

Well, there's lots of tactical options in FE. You can approach a situation in a lot of different ways. And there's lots of party members to choose from. It really depends on what kind of options you're looking for.

Can you recommend me some handheld RPGs? I have both 3DS and Vita and for them Bravely Default and Persona 4. Didn't care much for Persona 3 Portable and I've played alot of the PS1 classics.

Cake Attack
Mar 26, 2010

Here's a couple quality recommendations for each handheld system:

3DS:

Fire Emblem: Awakening (SRPG)
Shin Megami Tensei: IV
Etrian Odyssey (IV/U)

DS:

The World Ends with You
Radiant Historia

PSP:

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together (SRPG)

Can't think of anything for Vita outside of P4, sadly.

e: Ah, I suppose if you have Bravely Default already you're probably in a PAL region, right? In that case, disregard SMT:IV.

Yeah, gently caress Atlus for not publishing SMTIV in Europe. Apparently we have to live without that game. Are 3DS's region locked, though? Could I import the game?

Etrian Odyssey seems a bit intimidating. The game seems to be an old school dungeon crawler and that's a bit foreign to me. Also the art is so anime it bothers me a bit. I actually had Fire Emblem but I had a hard time getting into it. Should I give it a another try? What should I keep in mind when playing that game? I like Disgaea, but the Fire Emblem/Advanve Wars format was always abit off putting. Dunno why.

If I play DS games on my 3DS, doesn't the screen get super small and poo poo? Can I fix it somehow?

Also Vita is kind of an dead system to begin with. I conciously bought it as a Persona 4 machine and I don't regret it, but it's still a bit boring. I've played every Disgaea game out there and gotten a bit fed with them, but funnily enough I enjoyed Disgaea DS the most, mainly because of the fact that it was a handheld and I could watch a movie/LP/listen a podcast/read SA at the same time or, if it was a nice weather, sit on the porch or on the balcony. I have Disgaea D2 on my PS3 but I don't think I will touch that too much, but idea of having a Disgaea on the go is much more tempting. Should I go for Vita Disgaea 3 or just buy Disgaea 2 for PSP?

kirbysuperstar posted:

Well gently caress that noise. SAme thing happened with PSP, a lot of the good games didn't even get published over here.

Definitely Vita Disgaea 3. Everything but the main story itself is leagues better in Disgaea 3, and it doesn't seem like you play these games for the plot.

DS games played on 3DS are automatically upscaled to fill the 3DS screen. This tends to make them a bit blurry, which harms some games more than others. You can run it at native resolution by holding Start or Select as the game boots, which will make the image small but sharp.

If you're playing on a 3DS XL, the smaller size for DS games is very close to the normal size of a DS screen anyway.

I'm not sure I'd really call it Atlus' fault; they (and later Index) never established a European branch like they did with Atlus US. Isn't it up to Sega Europe now?

Yeah, I don't honestly whose fault it is. I'm just a bit bummed by their business practices: I almost exclusively play RPGs and handhelds are basically now the only platforms for those games, so when companies start to limit their publishing it's a pretty bad sign. Is it really that niche market?

Sakurazuka
Jan 24, 2004

NANI?

I think the only time JRPG's haven't been a niche market was during that PS1 era when FF7 made them vaguely popular.

The whole thing with SMT IV would be moot if the 3DS were region free, thanks Nintendo for making the only region locked handheld in history.

Looking it up (god what a weird game), it looks like it was developed by Spike Chunsoft rather than Atlus. Atlus US has always had its hands in other games besides Atlus' own, so that's not too surprising. For actual Atlus IPs they probably still need extra permission from Sega to get something done. But it might be a good sign of things to come. I mean, the work has already been done with the US release, why not just use that localization?

I am considering purchasing Persona 2: Eternal Punishment on PSN. Does this game work as a stand-alone or should one play Innocent Sin first? I ask because I do not have a PSP and have no real intentions on purchasing one in the future, so the likelihood I would play Innocent Sin before Eternal Punishment is low. I own P3: FES and P4 and loved those games, so I figured that I would like to give Eternal Punishment a try as well, assuming it is similar in theme/style to the later sequels.

You should definitely play Innocent Sin. Not only does the story work best with both halves, but I'd say it's the better game of the two as well. If you don't want to play it on the PSP you could always go with the translation patched PS1 version and play it on something like ePSXe.

How'd the re-release of Bravely Default turn out anyway? I heard very mixed things about the original so I'm kind of curious if the changes have improved the game significantly or what.

Sakurazuka

No idea how it differs from the original release, but it's pretty much the best JRPG since Xenoblade, though it's mostly a SNES RPG with better graphics and a ton of quality of life stuff. Being able to turn random encounters up, down or off completely is probably S-E's best contribution to the genre in years.

Does every Valkyria Chronicles II mission have a 6 character limit? Going off of beforeiplay, with all of its advice on which types of units are seemingly important, 6 just doesn't seem to be enough. Also, is it just me or are Engineers basically useless now that they can't take care of mines or heal tanks?

7 characters deployed at one time, though the map design is such that you will be rotating niche units out pretty frequently. Engineers still can repair tanks and restore ammo by walking next to units. They also have better guns than Scouts but yeah they're probably the worst class in the game overall and only really useful on APC escort missions.

I love RPGs of all stripes; Earthbound, Dark/Demon's Souls, TES (Morrowind->Skyrim, in that order), Pokemon, Mass Effect, etc. What I'm saying is that I know absolutely jack poo poo about RPGs for these systems and I want to explore. I don't know if Zelda or Metroidvanias count as RPGs, but I like handheld classic metroidvanias and Windwaker is the only game I have for the Wii U at the moment. Are there any games I should absolutely get? I can't find many games on the virtual console, even though like a million are listed online. I think that's because I'm on a Wii U and not a Wii, which is lame as hell. I wanted to download Majora's Mask.

This is dumb and false. It's a mess but it's a beautiful mess. It tries a lot and not all of it works and the game may be too big for its own good but it's not even close to a bad game.
