Since a lot of you buttes know your poo poo pretty well, any recommendations for cables? I need to replace all of mine, and I don't want to cheap out too much and get absolute shite, but I also don't want to drop $50 a cable on Monster poo poo.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Musician-s-Gear-Braided-Instrument-Cable-1-4--109313601-i1130258.gc was what I was looking at, but I worry they might be too cheap.

I had this cat I used to play with that would glom my cables, so I started going braided and he tried that poo poo and I was Dikembe Mutombo on him.

You don't need the super ridiculous oxygen free pure silver cables forged in the fires of Faustus's burning virgin loins but neither should you get the cheapo no name brands*. Just get anything $25 worth from one of the companies that has a no-questions asked return policy at guitar center. IIRC Planet Waves and Monster both have that, I know Monster does as Guitar Center replaced a cable for free without even trying it or asking for a receipt or anything. I had that cable for years and the only thing wrong was that the tip was kinda loose from having used the 90 degree end in a strat.

Anyway these are some good ones to look at but ask the guys at GC what brands have that deal with them.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/planet-waves-gold-plated-1-4-straight-instrument-cable
25 feet should be more than enough but 15 is fine

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/monster-cable-s-100-1-4-straight-instrument-cable
these are what I have since I didn't know planet waves had the return deal at GC and it's too late now since I'll apparently have them forever.

*BTW I've had a cheapo no name brand cable last me for 10 years at home just from not taking it with me places and also because it had a molded connector like the two linked above. You can always penny-pinch and get some of these but it's much more worth it to shell out the cash for cables you're going to have forever no matter what.

As long as it's braided then it's all good really. I prefer metal ends as they generally have better shielding but that doesn't really matter too much to be honest, something like this should be fine.

Electrical hobby shops here usually have pretty decent 1/4" to 1/4" cable, they aren't explicitly aimed at instruments so they are a bit cheaper, might be worth checking out.

Comedy option would be to buy some super-shielded jack plugs and some braided cable and make your own, it's probably only me who thinks this is a good idea though.

I wouldn't recommend the DIY route for anything other than patch cables for your pedal board. I know a guy who used George L's as his main cable and he would never stop complaining about it.

Shielding helps a lot, forgot about that. I prefer molded connectors as they're sturdier but metal ends with the connections with epoxy covering the electrical connections are also really sturdy.

And unlike MY TONE WOODS there's a measurable difference in the quality of the cables but anything other than capacitance/foot is spergy signals engineering garbage that you shouldn't really care about, and cap/ft only really matters at 100ft or so as then it starts to get noticeable.

Making your own cables is the most cost efficient way to do it, even longer ones, but that requires :siren:soldering:siren: (although it's really simple stuff). On the plus side, it means you can fix cables that you already own (unless they are epoxied in which case they shouldn't be broken).

That all being said,

quote:

When eventually I tried it for myself, I couldn’t believe the results. Not only was there almost no noise, but my whole guitar tone had changed for the better: tighter bass, smoother highs, more detail and astounding clarity.

that is complete nonsense and don't buy Mogami cables for ~my tonezz~ please

That reminds me of a guy I built a guitar for a few years back, he wanted vintage wire for the electrics so he spent Ł150 on "genuine 60's Gibson vintage wire TONE" from ebay. Ł150 for less than a meter of semi-rotten cabling :psyduck:.

Actually the shielded one has pretty good connectors; the bits are joined under the sheathe by like a solid plug of epoxy rather than a few drops, but the cable itself is thin as hell and feels like it would break in half if i bent it.

Best part was that the rotten wire made the guitar sound like poo poo (which is exactly what I told him would happen) and the fucker tried to get a refund, so I soldered in some new wire in-front of him and the sound was ten times better. I offered to mount the TONE WIRE in a picture frame for him but he didn't think that was funny. He probably re-sold it on ebay to another idiot.

Probably shouldn't have posted that, but gently caress that guy, he went around telling everyone I didn't know anything about building guitars because I pointed out that 'vintage PAF pickups' are a waste of money when you can buy something pretty much exactly the same for a lot, lot less than Ł200 a pickup (he was the guy who told me that new magnets aren't as good because radiation something something electron transfer).

Lmao that owns. And magnets do naturally decay over time but it's on a geologic scale or if they get heated up past their curie temp (which is really loving high for most ferrous material. )

Both really, I tend to use off the shelf more as a lot of people want a certain brand/type of pickup (EMG's are pretty common), when it's something nuts like vintage PAF's I ask that customers either pay me the full amount before I order them (included in the deposit), or preferably buy them themselves so I can test the pickups infront of them (when you buy anything 'vintage' there is always a risk that it won't work, particularly as a lot of 'vintage' stuff is fake).

If I'm making a guitar to sell on spec rather than on order I'll usually put in hand-wound pickups as they tend to get more attention this way.

Hell yes. The high-end vintage guitar market is a shameful pile of bullshit as well, so many fakes and a lot of the genuine instruments have had so many modifications and repairs over the years that they probably aren't very genuine anymore. It's stupid.

I saw Another stew Mac video where they were restoring a 50s LP with a bunch of botched mods on it by just routing the pickup cavities into a swimming pool on the front, gluing in a block of mahogany, and hand carving the arch back to normal with normal pickup cavities. Then they had another guy do a gold top finish on it and it looked good as new. After watching that I kept thinking "man this must be like a snuff film to the tones chasers kinda guys."

Despite how much the cork-sniffers poo poo on anything solid state, amp modeling tech is getting really goddamned good. More and more big names are swapping over to them (at least for gigs) thanks to how close to the "real deal" they sound and the reliability/lack of maintenance needs.
